I have so many memories from this mall. I worked at The Gap, Forever 21, Kay Jewelers, and the mini Circuit City Express. Makes me very sad to see its state of decline.
Especially surprisingly knowing it was used for Starcourt Mall in Stranger Things Season 3
I used to go there in the mid 2000s. I’m amazed that even the anchors have lasted this long. I knew back then the mall didn’t have much time with Discover Mills and MoG down the road. It’s sad though, because the floors in the downstairs and some of the stores made a very satisfying sound when walked on with heeled shoes. Thanks for covering these places! You do a great job.
This breaks my heart. I remember being 13 going to Gwinnett Place in 1984 when it first opened. So packed and lively. My first job was there. Friday nights walking around and eating at the food court. Spencer's. Riding the glass elevator. I drive by there often. Always brings back good memories.
Geez the mall of GA and sugarloaf (then Discovery) mills did a number to the place I recall going to the mall Friday/Saturday nights and hanging out at Space Port Arcade next to pretzeltime on the upper level in the mid 90s sad to hear there was a murder there a few years ago. Hopefully the county will do something good with the property
I was there during the filming of holidate as they we’re shooting scenes with all the extras walking around. Got in trouble for filming by security. They tried to intimidate me to delete the footage but I didn’t 😅 Kinda sucks that Frys next to it also closed.
This was my go to mall for most of my life. I went in it about 5 years ago to get a watch battery fixed. I couldn't believe how dead it was, this is way worse. Sad to see it go cause of the memories but also glad its going away to something else. If I ever need a walk down memory lane, I can just come back to this video.
Man...Gwinnett Place Mall (and Venture Mall down the street) was the place to be for me as a kid from the early 90s to early 00s. Fondest memory of Gwinnett Place out of the countless visits was that one year they hosted a Pokemon TCG tournament near the center area, and for Venture Mall it was that one shop I don't recall the name of that sold trading cards and a bunch of nerd crap along with laser tag. And of course the Beanie Babies table at the entrance. I legit almost teared up when I visited Gwinnett Place again in 2017 for the first time since like 2003 and saw how dead it was just like in this video. On top of that Venture Mall is pretty much unrecognizable other than still having that Men's Warehouse and movie theater. Actually felt like my childhood was dead lol.
Is “Santa Fe” Venture Malls?
It’s so weird cuz this mall could be popping. I work across the street and the area is crazy packed and there’s so many stores. It just is known as dead therefor it stays dead
This is my childhood mall in the mid 2000s it hurts seeing it like this but there’s nothing you can do about it with bad owners. Honestly for me funny enough it started going down hill when they tried to renovate it and changed the fountain. 😂 i Believe they should just make it into a 80s themed thing like stranger things I think it would attract people I’d definitely go back to it
Great Job on Filming This! Wow How Amazing
Fantastic video! I didn't get a chance to get out here before covid hit, but I can safely say that this is exactly the type of video I'd have liked to produce about it.
Great video like always
Great to see the new “old style” Sears logo... but not good when out of business...
I remember going there in the late 2000s to the early 2010s (when I was a toddler), at that time, it wasn’t full, but wasn’t empty. Sure was a beautiful mall.
Edit: grandma told me we also went their in the late 2000s, still a beautiful mall though.
Same, my parents would always bring me to the food court and when my mom was a teenager in the 80s/90s my aunties and her would always go to this mall. Her close friend also worked in the food court
@@chloesithisom2785 that is cool to hear your mom went there in her teens, and that she had a friend who worked their.
They should have renamed it "Starcourt Mall" and filled it up, and that would have brought in a lot of stranger things fans to shop! After all, this was the filming location of "Starcourt Mall".
Sadly, "filling it up" is MUCH easier said than done when it comes to malls like these :(
I can't believe macy's of all places is hanging on there. I would have thought they left years ago
My mom used to work at the “Riches” store before being bought by Macy’s
If they want to bring Gwinnett place mall back to life they have to enable people from south of I-85 an easier way to get to it. The current way of coming via pleasant hill road is a congested nightmare. Gwinnett county needs another overpass without all the stop lights that crosses I-85 and goes directly to the mall from the south. No I-85 on ramps or off ramps to cause congestion. It just simply goes over I-85 and leads directly to the mall. Otherwise people living south of I-85 aren’t going to come to Gwinnett place mall because of that messed up congested pleasant hill road.
I think they should turn it into mixed use office, medical, retail, and maybe apartments. They should keep the part where Stranger Things Starcout Mall was filmed and make it a tourist attraction.
Also I'm going to be going there did you have any trouble getting into the blocked off areas?
I don't recommend trying to access the closed off areas as security can be very aggressive at the mall.
As a highschooler this was the place to be
It's strange that Stranger Things didn't spark it up a little. You'd think such a popular show with a fanbase that likes to visit the places would go.
There was a gruesome murder there in 2017 so probably not much Stranger Things could do to revive its image
A lot of fans were going for a while but once people started stealing props and damaging the mall security removed everything that was shown in Stranger Things.
Moonbeam says it all
So there’s nothing left but the Anchor stores
Whats the surrounding area like? Is it far from major thoroughfares? Are there big boxes like Walmart or Target nearby? What has kept people away aside from retailers bailing out?
Usually location plays a big part in determining if a mall can survive. So tell me about the area.
It's right by the main interstate that goes into Atlanta and It's located in a largely commercial area. The two malls that opened just minutes up the interstate in 1999 and 2001 is what started the decline and shifting demographics and increased crime in the area sealed it's fate I believe.
@@RetailWorld I live in Duluth and can confirm. When Mall of Georgia and Discover Mills opened (now Sugarloaf Mills) this mall started to decline. The main road is full of commercial businesses and tons of restaurants, but just adjacent to that are lots of apartment communities that unfortunately in the last 10-15 years have become pretty crime-ridden. Unfortunately a lot of malls are dying (even Sugarloaf Mills) because of online shopping.
I can agree with Rosemarie. I live in Suwanee and the area around the mall is popping. A lot of dealerships around the area, food, a Hispanic mall across the road. And they are currently finishing up a amazon warehouse about 3 minutes down the road. The surround area of the mall isn’t dead at all. Only the mall
I’m going to make a video of this as well. It’s depressing how this mall is.
It has gotten so much worse in just the last 2 years. It's becoming the next Richland or Cincinnati mall.
@@RetailWorld I agree. I was there 3 months ago with a friend.
I am driving up from Florida... is the filming area accessible?
It is closed off for public access. You can get into the area at your own risk though.
my dad brought me here to practice driving because it’s so dead lmao
:( i used to come here alot as a kid but now i only go to walk around or i go to Macy's
what are they gonna do with the part they filmed in?
The county purchased the mall, so the whole mall is going to be redeveloped into something else not yet known.
@@RetailWorld, Its later in the future though, right?
@@damonclark218 Sometime in 2021 most likely.
Most malls seem to be dead these days
Don’t worry, although it seems like it, there are still many malls alive, it’s just many dead malls were probably dead, because of tragedies, being outdated, and many more. However, there are still many malls, so don’t worry (just sayin btw)
will the mall still be open by this weekend?
Yes the mall is still open.
@@RetailWorld, Is it scary going back there, since there are a bunch of signs saying (Caution) and (Violaters will be charged Ttespass)???
Proceed at your own risk is all I can say.
@@RetailWorld, I hope thr black barriers will be partly down, like it was when you went
I live around the corner and it’s very dead
Nothing has been done except talk
i can't watch, the camra bouncing is annoying.
We are using a $300 video camera with gimbal stabilization. The footage is extremely smooth for walking, you won't get much smoother than it already is.
The quality is impressive, mind you he went out of his way to grab footage of areas that weren’t accessible.
