So many holiday memories from the early 90s

This mall used to be great! I worked there for about a year in 1999-2000, and it was a pretty busy place.

Gotta say, it looks pretty well occupied and has some modern remnants in it. Zumiez, etc. If this mall survived covid (which it seemingly did) I imagine it’ll hang on. Long live the malls!

Do you accept this impermanence? It's hard to see as an adult who walked these halls as a child.

We opened that mall and had SO MANY good times there. With all the trash from Katrina and the New Orleans wards blowing in and never leaving it has seriously affected the viability of the mall. I drove 9 hours to speak to mall management about doing a documentary on the mall and the bastards broomed me 2 minutes after I showed up. I love the place but the people running it are shit.

Pica Pica is still my favoeite store there. Its been there since the mall opened and still ran by the same people. Blew so much money in that store over the last 20 years.

In December 1985 I worked at a recording studio right across from the movie theater at 06:24. I think it was called SoundTracks and there was one in Gatlinburg also. What a super busy mall back then. I if I worked nights I had to park way way out from the entrance. Sad to see the change.. good times back in the day tho! Thank you for posting this!

2023 UPDATE: The mall is permanently closed with the exception of Barnes & Noble which will be leaving that site and moving early 2024 to Garners Ferry Road Southeastern(new owners) plans to erect more than 500 apartments, new restaurants and retail space, including a grocery store and a brewery, as well as a city park.

Unfortunately the beautiful 1990's Mills food court aesthetic is no more. Simon removed the stained glass topped gazebo. Gone are all the neon and decorations. Simon thought long and hard and went for the IRS audit office feel by choosing naked walls in the risky off white and grey. Just in the nick of time too, that 90's nostalgia is starting to hit hard and become popular. It would be a shame for people to enjoy the time capsule. Nothing screams entertainment mall like a committee approved DMV aesthetic. I realize the mall was built in 2001 but the decor was more fitting with the mid 90's. I'm sad to see it go, I've been coming here since it opened.

I used to work here as a kid making some money for college. Still good friends with the people I met there. Sad to see it close down.

New here but I just subbed. I grew up in Springboro in the 60/70s and worked at the Dayton Mall at several stores. Have you been to Montreal Canada and seen the underground "mall" type stores there?

I can’t speak for all Americans, but the places that I shop are the grocery store, the hardware store, and for what I can’t get there I go to Walmart or Target. I just don’t have the spare time to fight through traffic to go to the nearest mall. Other people may have other reasons why they don’t go to malls but that is mine.

I "grew up" in this mall in the 80's and early 90's.

If they want to bring Gwinnett place mall back to life they have to enable people from south of I-85 an easier way to get to it. The current way of coming via pleasant hill road is a congested nightmare. Gwinnett county needs another overpass without all the stop lights that crosses I-85 and goes directly to the mall from the south. No I-85 on ramps or off ramps to cause congestion. It just simply goes over I-85 and leads directly to the mall. Otherwise people living south of I-85 aren’t going to come to Gwinnett place mall because of that messed up congested pleasant hill road.

Back when I was in HS in the late 90's Regency mall was the place to go! Had all the stores, movies and a great arcade.

I used to live within walking distance of Regency Mall in the late 90's back when I lived in JAX. It was a great place to hangout with my HS friends. Back then it was packed with shoppers and all stores spaces were occupied. Spent many hours watching movies and playing in the arcade there! Sad its gone the way of most indoors malls.

When I relocated to Columbia from New York City in 07, this mall used to be packed on the weekends. It's really a somber to see the mall go downhill.

In its day, this was the mall to go to, and had unbelievably good out parcels. Now it’s truly frightening.

This mall was super busy back in the summer of 2001. I remember so many stores were open, including the Ruby Tuesdays and JC Penny. Now whenever I go, I only go for Player's Choice.

Back when I was a UGA student the mall was already starting to die. I went in a couple times early in my time as a student mostly for the retro video game store, but always thought it would've been cool to see the place in its heyday. I think the area has potential in the plans for mixed-use development (heavier on the residential side from what I've read), but I'm a bit skeptical it will be able to compete commercially with the shops in Downtown or off of Epps Bridge.

Dam this sad man. Im from athens and was going there as far as back I can remember. My father used to take me out to eat at Morrison restaurant before it changed to Picadilly. This super sad to see this.

I remember this mall. Years ago I found a large picture of a Great White Shark in this mall and purchased it. Is it still open now?

Ekerds use to be in there. Back in the 80's as a toddler I had frozen bananas in the summer. Popcicles cost money, couldnt have them. Tifton Mall was the place to be for a long time. Still is aparently.

I went to Eastgate all the time as a kid in the 80s. A lot of this don't even look recognizable back to what it was. That fountain wasn't part of the old mall. It had a much smaller one near the center. The big post office out side the mall was a large toy store called linelle play world (probably miss spelt that by a lot). In the 80s, the inside of the mall had a burger King that I went to for the thunder cats meals. Recently, the call center has left the one anchor spot
