This hurts my heart to see. I remember when this mall was full of life.... my grandparents took me here when I was young. Brings a tear in my eye
same here
sadly, that is the entire case for Jacksonville as a whole.. was born and raised there.. nothing but great memories through the 90s and early 00s... the last 15 years have been horrible in Jax, glad i moved.
@@popacap21 Me too, can't believe what happened there. So sad.
I left Jacksonville in summer 1996, Regency Square Mall was still doing very well back then. We used to do all our Christmas shopping there. One of my sisters was very fond of a store called Kat Man Du, and my other sister liked Cloud 9. I visited Jacksonville in 2009 and was horrified by the state of the mall.
It's only worse now :(
Yeah it was still popular up until 05-06, and then the St. Johns Town Center opened, and crime picked up in Regency, and everything changed.
Have many good memories of that mall. Many Sunday lunches at the Piccadilly Cafeteria after Church. 😊
So many memories here as a kid in the 80s. I can still smell it. Loved it at Christmas. Loved the old food court and the original Chick-fil-A.
I used to go to the arcade it once had.
Yes the Tilt arcade in the food court!
It even had Aladdins Castle at one point.
@@Zer0Mercy83 Gamestop is currently where it used to be.
Dumped a lot of quarters into S.T.U.N. Runner one time
Wow! In the 80's/early 90's Regency Square Mall was the center of Jacksonville. Unfortunately, by the mid 90's it was downright dangerous - especially after dark - that's what really killed it for me. So when the Avenues Mall opened I never went back. I don't think I've even been out that way in 20 years and I only live 10-20 minutes away from it depending on the traffic.
I was most hopeful for the Belks' being repurposed by Impact Church. I might've ventured back over there. But after the announcement nothing happened.
As far as the Town Center, it opened long after Regency ceased being an attraction. The Town Center is "open air", and is only enjoyable for an "all day mall experience" in winter and early spring (4 months tops). The rest of the year you need to get there before opening to park close to the store you want to go to and try to get out as quickly as possible before the sun and heat sets in. It does have high end shops you can't find anywhere south of Atlanta and North of Orlando - but that's pretty much all. For the most part it's just a huge, sprawling, congested collection of stripmalls with a cohesive decor theme. But it's the "hot spot" in Jacksonville right now. Just like the Regency area and the Baymeadows area were. Until they weren't.
I managed the Hat Shack there fir 6 years. If you pause video at 4:20 it's the empty spot next to the jewelry store. Worked in that mall for 12 years total in my life and saw the decline first hand. What isn't mentioned is the owners in 2008 did NOT handle the stock market crash well at all and raised everyones rent to an unbelievable and outrages rate which is why a lot if them left.
AHHH, i remember that store!!! Bought a few hats from there while in Middle School. My brother worked at Outer Limitz on the West Wing from 02-04, he used to eat at Isalnd Cafe almost everyday LOL
Regency was the shit in the 90s
Great video! My childhood was in this Mall. I lived close by and spent most of my free time playing fighting games in Tilt and checking out the free demo games at Babbages and EB games. I consumed way too much Panda Express Orange Chicken lol. I took my first date there and we've been together for 15 years now. I'm glad some of us got to experience it while it was still in its prime. Thanks for the memories!
You couldn’t find parking when this place was booming. You had to park across the main road at Toys-R-Us if you were lucky.
I grew up in Jacksonville. My mom worked at JCPenney as the assistant store manager for a few years starting in 1999. So many childhood memories going to work with her. Can’t believe the mall is gone ☹️
I used to go to the Tilt and hit up Babbages.
Back when I was in HS in the late 90's Regency mall was the place to go! Had all the stores, movies and a great arcade.
God, I was born in 92 and remember vividly coming here from like 96-04, back when it was still popular. I still remember the two-story food court before they shut it down and rebuilt the newer one in 98 or 99, and then opened the AMC Theater in 98 as well, and then the new Tilt in 03 i think. This place was still fairly popular in 2005-2006, but then the St. Johns Town Center opened, and slowly started taking over shopping in Jacksonville, while at the same time Crime rate in Regency got worse and worse. Such a shame that the mall is basically non-existent nowadays. I cherish the memories I made there as a kid. This vid was hard to watch.
I worked at this mall back in the mid 90's after Market Square Mall shut its doors 4ever.... it is so sad to see Regency Mall dying this way...
When I first moved to Jacksonville me and my buddies were looking for something to do and decided we'd walk around the mall. Not knowing the area, we just googled the closest mall to us and drove there. We were stunned and confused why this giant mall had 0 people in it aside from the employees at a couple stores. Was incredibly creeped out and never went in that mall again. The only reason to go to Regency is the AMC
Fond memories of Jacksonville living in San Pablo Rd. Learned to drive there and would take Atlantic Boulevard to the beach and hang out at this mall with my friends.
I worked at Ivey's at Regency Square 1976-77. I still remember the JCPenney restaurant and candy shop, a great pizza place a couple of doors down from Ivey's, the Record Bar, Spencer's Gifts. The Slide in the back parking lot area.I left Jacksonville in 1977, have always wondered what happened to make Regency go downhill. I'm happy I wasn't there to witness it.
Nice info on the passing of ownership. I work for att and had to do several installs inside the mall. What a nightmare the wiring was. Our main closet was up a ladder in an internal alleyway inside the mall between 2 shops.
I currently work at the spirit Halloween store at this mall and I gotta say it’s sad to walk through the mall and see how dead it is I always used to go to f.y.e, Spencer’s, and GameStop all the time here it’s honestly sad to see and I’m not sure how much longer it will be around
What old store is Spirit located in this year?
Retail World sears
I went there when i was little😭😭😭😭😭😭
Me too... I really enjoyed that little train ride next to the food court
I always liked the Avenues more, but it breaks my hear to see this.
1999/2000, i remember my mom was so excited for the Belk, and me my dad wandered the mall for HOURS while she was in the belk.
Seein the foodcourt dead hurts tthe most, i remember in 2001, that place was packed, with people eating, and the back corner was these DDR machines all the kids with the trip pants would hang out by. And now... its just empty tables, empty corner...
and its almost as if you can see the ghost of the past with how empty it is now.
Good video. Thanks for filming.
The demographics around the mall changed in the 90s; yes, exactly what you think. As a result, crime in Arlington skyrocketed and it doomed both the mall and the middle/ upper middle class neighborhoods surrounding it. The decline in that area only took about 10 years. People don't want to live and/or shop where they don't feel safe.
You hit the nail on the head. They tried..they instituted sound ordinances, even put in a police sub station. Sad to see something we loved be eaten away like a cancer.
Sadly it's true. I've just recently moved to Jax in the Mayport area and have passed by Regency many times. Every time, it's hardly filled
A great improvement over your 1st video. I enjoyed your 1st vid nonetheless, but your confidence is showing through more. The camera shots were great, not a single dry moment. The information presented was concise and interesting, and the background music was relaxing without being intrusive. Keep up the awesome.
My husband worked on this mall when they were building it in 1966 I believe or 1967.
When it had 2 arcades it rocked!
Very accurate. Your knowledge must mean you live in Jax?
I grew up in Jax, but I don't live there anymore.
Mentioned crime rising, but not specifically the shooting inside. That was a big deal, at least optically.
Sooo many memories of that mall. It was the only mall around when our family moved there on Consolidation Day (Oct 1, 1968). My brother & a cousin worked there.
I lived in Jax in the 80's & have MANY fond memories of hanging at Regency!! ❤️ sad to see it in this shape. 😔 our malls up here near my hometown of kankakee I'll are the same tho...our malls are a dying breed anymore 😭 great video tho!! Ty for sharing!
Thanks for watching! I grew up in Jax right up the road from Regency in the 90's so I have many memories from it as well!
I live right by there.
I had to go there today to buy my kids school uniforms cuz it's the only store in town allowed to sell them . I just uploaded a video to my channel showing all the giant holes in the roof where you can see the sky and people still trying to sell their merchandise with the whole Mall smelling like mold .
I met my wife here. We both worked at Natural Wonders part time for fun in 1998-99
Great video! I’ll be posting my video soon, with footage taken in March 2023.
Great content, editing and music choice. Was first here in the early to mid 1980's, was a happening Place. Love the photo of the payphones right out side of JC Penney, That was one of the meet up spots. Those skylights always leaked they used to be a sort of domed plexiglass. Where a lot of the kids play stuff and exabits in the middle used to be water fountains and wishing wells with giant gold fish in them.... So Sad to see it today. ty Florida
Me and my mom go to Regency mainly for shoes but we also go for Bath and Body Works. I’ve only lived in Florida for 7 years but i still remember the old arcade/golf place they have. So sad.
That sucks. This place was booming in the 80's.
Holy crap. I grew up in Jacksonville and remember going here with my girlfriend at the time just about once a week. We would spend all day shopping and hanging out. We were very much mall-rats. She even worked for one of the stores for a while. Good memories at least. Sad to see this place going under.
It fell Because everyone Dropped their unruly kids off and fighting and stealing prevailed..sad. 👁
Yep, a common phenomenon at malls where some go to just "see & be seen." Natch, many of them were up to no good.
Do you go up north to examine dying malls? Because there are quite a few in New Jersey that'll get your attention.
We haven't yet, but will probably be heading up that way sometime this year!
Because of blacks all malls will be shut down.
I worked at Furchgotts in 1970, had a Picadilly Cafeteria there too.
Lookin like the dead rising mall but no zombies ahh but for real i love that mall
Wow do I have memories of this mall. Moved to Jax in '79 when they had just doubled the size of the mall (from the center anchor store which became Gayfers to Sears). Mr Dunderbaks, Picadilly, Orange Tree. The brown tile! The Gap was across from the food court before moving across the aisle to the larger store nearly adjacent to the food court. That’s where I worked for 3 years mid-late 90's. The video arcade next to Orange Tree was my go to spot in the 80's. I remember when they added the food court, then the (huge at the time) AMC movie theater behind the food court. Use to love the Benetton store, especially since I had a huge crush on one of the managers lol. Thought she looked like Markie Post... but then the 2000's hit, and it just became a sad and scary place to go. The comments earlier are true, the place was so bustling. I loved working the Gap at Christmas time, since it was wall-to-wall people. Had to stay 2 hours after just to straighten everything for the next day. The shocking thing isn’t that it died, it’s that it died so quickly.
Thanks for sharing. I grew up going to Regency from the late 80's to the early 00's and saw the slow downfall first hand.
GREATNESS NEVER DIES what do you mean?
GREATNESS NEVER DIES hmm, it’s been a while, obviously. But it was in one of the main entrances on the back side. I believe it was the entrance that became the new Dillard’s back in '92.
Been here last time i came to jax........the front facade is nice but inside is just sad
Great Video!!!!! F+L, Corey
It's twin mall (Orange Park) is still very strong. I go to Orange Park every week and it's packed.
The Avenues is also a great mall still
Me and my grandma always used to go there before it closed permanently
Member when the food court had two stories and a movie theater? I member
AC Consignment just moved to a different location before it actually went out of business.
JC penny’s closed
What happen to thismall another one bite the dust so what goingto happen now to this nice mall ??
It's the internet shopping now
I used to go there all the time, my mother worked there. It's heart breaking, I went just to see what was left, they took the last major store there (Jcpennys). The ceiling is deteriorating. It looks like a flea market, although flea markets actually. thrive. The only reason I saw that would make me go there was the bath and body works, but why would I got to regency when I can easily go to Avenues.
Avenues and St John's Town Centre
Does anyone remember when the movies where at the jcpenney wall or am I imagining it
The original theater was where Piccadilly used to be in the parking lot by JCPenney
@@RetailWorld also, when I moved here in 92, there was a smaller theater slightly to the right of where the much bigger AMC is now. Can't remember if it was Regal?
I wish Gwinnett Place Mall was this vibrant! How the hell does Stranger Things come into town, & the mall actually becomes MORE vacant? Damn you, Netflix/Moonbeam! >:-(
I'm from South GA, I'm definitely familiar of this place. . . The good thing about the fall of the malls is the fact that it gives other companies and properties a chance to rise . . . It's not fair to allow one mogul or one company to reign supreme for centuries ! They must fall and allow others to have a spot at the top. . . It's similar to sports kinda. . . Dr J to Larry Bird, Bird to magic Johnson, Johnson to Jordan, Jordan to Kobe, Kobe to LeBron, LeBron to curry/Durant. . . The only difference is that these athletes know they can't be supreme forever, but these business moguls will stomp on their smaller competitors until the day they literally die . . . SELFISH !
with the amount of homeless on the streets in Jacksonville they could turn this into apartments for those who really want to get back on their feet I am not talking about those who are scum and don't care I am talking about the ones who just need help to get back on their feet.
Take the horse(mall)to the field and let it rest. Now the mall if open for a mummy exhibit. featuring The last in tap ,trash cans , broke tile and mold smell which mummies like and are looking to wrap the mall up COMPLETELY here with in a year or so. How SAD 😫😣😥😨😩😢😭☹️😒😓😨😧😦😩😟🙁
It has always been my opinion that regency should be demolished and replaced with a Disney World, 6 Flags, or Universal studios. It would create lots of jobs and give the area something it has never had before.
Not enough room for a theme park. However, it's not a bad idea (for Jacksonville). I voted for a city council man who wanted to make a theme park here. Of course, they didn't win. Anyways, I remember when this was a hopping place in the 90s. Now if you want to go to the mall, you go to the Avenues
