    I have seriously looked at the robot, electric lawnmowers to try to figure out how to turn it into my security guard for all the hungry animals🤣 Add a police light, a water gun, and a scary voice😎 Now I have to add in amending soil in his off time🤣

    Good morning.
    Pests have been awful this year i feel your pain.
    I think that's a good move to make those beds more productive.
    Have a great day!

    I have definitely moved my garden beds….actually twice now. I did it because I was trying to find a better location and not walk so far to where I had them initially. Lots of work but so far soo good! A good gardener friend said I should just hang it up till fall and I was mad at her but I got over it and decided not to give up. My goal is to have food to feed my family and I’m not giving up on that even if we have triple digits now and for the duration of summer. What a wimp I’d be if I let a few failures make me quit. I’m putting up shade cloth this weekend!

    I expanded my raised beds like crazy last year. I went from 3 small beds into a huge capital E shaped bed that has walls to get the raspberries from spreading. I was able to repurpose all the wood from those 3 small beds with some extra deck boards I had and use the concrete foundation the previous owners had put behind the garbage as 2 of the walls. Because of weed pressure from Morning Glory, I put weekblocks, hardware cloth and some rocks along the edges of the bed. Did hugelculture (probably spelled that wrong) with logs and sticks down in the bed. Then got the "garden mix" soil from a local nursery which ended up being 3 scoops of topsoil and 3 scoops of compost. It has worked well. Also doing a permaculture style Grocery Row Garden down on the property. Had to get deer netting up. That stopped the damage I was getting. Problem is, it's a weak material. So I will be lining it over the next year or so with chicken wire to reinforce it.

    My cat helps with squirrels. I decided to do it "let's see what happens bed" not changing native soil. I kinda of outlined a spot, threw down some seeds and left for a couple of weeks. Came back, added a little better, soil, fertilized, and added melon seeds around the perimeter. I think it's my favorite plot-least amount of effort with zinnias, sunflowers, etc in the middle and melons on the outside. Ill build my next bed in a similar way.

      Yup that the lack of light in there. It ain't always harvesting and smiles that's for sure

    I haved two raised beds that I need to move this fall. They don't get enough sunlight between October and April. I need to relocate them to where they get more light in the winter, and are shaded late in the afternoon during the summer. My primary use for them will be cool weather crops, beets, carrots, turnips, and radishes. So, they must go to another location that I already have picked out for them.
    The little chicks look as ugly as hell with loosing their down, and having feathers growing in. They are enjoying their new super-deluxe chicken condo (compared to the borooder box). I am not having any problem with them leaving the coop in the morning, and returning to it at night.

    Those raccoons are a nuisance for sure!
    After you move those beds, you might consider putting in an in-ground asparagus bed where the wild garden was. (Or some other perennials like berries if you don’t like asparagus.) Once established, you won’t have to water it- asparagus is so easy to care for and you can just let the ferns run wild once you are done harvesting. I’ve had a bed for over 10 years. I fertilize once in the spring and cut back the ferns in the fall and just chop and drop and that’s all I ever do for it. I have literally never watered it since the first year I put it in. Just a suggestion for something to do with that space.
    Good luck with the garden re-vamp!

      i wont be planting any food there. I think once we move the beds we will be busy up keeping the garden. I have another idea for that space. it wont stay empty.

    No don’t give up. I’m going to move 1/3 of my entire garden. The hot sun is frying everything that gets the most sun.
    I think the veggies these days need more shade but still get the light.

    I'm dealing with wild animals, catching & releasing. It's getting old, thinking of finding a farm dog. The animals hate dog odors and barking but it's a process.

    I move stuff every year attempting to make the most productive easy to manage food forrest. When I like the results the beds stay, if not, I am working my old butt off trying snother spot. Makes for an interesting produce hunt. lol Thank you for sharing your knowledge and what works and foes not work for you. Many would just give up. Not an option in the world today though! 😊

    I got cheap deer netting off amazon and the deer have learned they can slowly walk into it and it will break and when I chase them out they run through and break another section. Reinforcing it constantly. It was fine in spring because i could easily replace summer crops but now it is too late for that. Set up a garden on my raised balcony for tomatoes, peppers, and some squash I know will be safe. It's just a constant battle with the deer since the know there is good stuff right behind the fence

    Yeah I know how plans can change. We started our homestead about 2 years ago and planted some fruit trees and started a garden. This spring we wanted to build a barn and the township told us we could build it next to the orchard and garden where we wanted it. I want to fence everything in close to the barn because we get a lot of deer pressure. So now, next year, everything is moving to the new barn location. But I think it's going to be better because I learned a lot from the last 2 years and now I want to incrop the orchard and garden together. I just hope the trees survive being transplanted.

    • @sandybottomhomestead
      @sandybottomhomestead  Před 13 dny +1

      take as many roots as you can with them and keep them well watered. We have done a few transplantings like that in the past with pretty good success.

    Had to move my potato beds this year. They had enough light where they were, but i planted too close to some arborvitae and their roots invaded the nice potato dirt. Also re-did the raspberry patch. Trying it in a tall raised bed to try and stop the spread. I'll know in a couple of years if that worked.

    Seems every year I'm tweaking stuff and adding beds! I had a great asparagus bed, until wild blackberry, Japanese stiltgrass, sorrel, and poke took it over. In the process of cleaning that area out 🤷‍♀️. Haven't decided if I'll do asparagus again.

    I have three beds and six big humongous containers, but I’m gonna be moving them around as well…and will also do a big change on what and where to plant things yep I’m doing the same thing next year, but I don’t know if physically move them. I’m just gonna redirect where I’m where I’m gonna Sow at 🌱

    Those darn animals. All they are trying to do is survive, but they are SO destructive and annoying. For us it is squirrels digging up seeds and seedlings. My husband has to make metal mesh structures and fences around/over each raised bed or pot. My big project at the end of this year is to paint our fence white to reflect more sunlight into the garden area. It will have a huge benefit to that partial shady spot. We cram as many plants and pots into our tiny backyard and this will make a difference. Am happy with our garden this year, but it is constant care, planning and maintenance.

      I would gladly put some out for them if they would just leave my crops and pets alone. Raccoons, birds, deer, all are issues.

      @sandybottomhomestead  Před 14 dny +2

      I've got one that does different sounds. It will cost about the same to just move the garden then buy a new one though

    Maybe you need some of that electric netting

    • @sandybottomhomestead
      @sandybottomhomestead  Před 13 dny

      that would be the next step but it is costly for sure. that is why we wanted to move it if we have to do that we can do it all at once.
