Thank you for explaining this! Just trying not to harm the bees.
A video on peppers, particularly about topping peppers, would be wonderful! This is our first year growing peppers, with all of either the [young] plants or the fruits to be donated to individuals and/or hunger centers who'll actually use and enjoy them, so if topping is beneficial we'd like to know about it and how to do it most advantageously.
Thanks so much, Ben!
Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
After a terrible zucchini crop last year, this season we have an over abundance. Wife and I have been frying them just like you do fried green tomatoes. Off the hook awesome!
I also heard that waiting till later in the season to plant Your squash will help if you're having a lot of problems with squash, bugs or borers bc They're mainly prevalent in early Spring.😊HOWEVER I'm thinking about next year. Going to the bottom of the yard and planting a couple rows of squash. so I can collect the borerss to fish with.😊
The vine borer is my nemesis!!! In SE TX, we have them from spring to winter. They are relentless.
I’ve tried all the tricks, now I just cut open my squash squirt BT in the vine. Lost a bunch already but winning the war on some.
I’ve chased that beautiful moth all over my yard with wasp spray to knock them down and squish. 😡
Trying grey zucchini, it’s supposed to better at resisting. Tatume has done well for me. The struggle is real!
Blessings!
Good afternoon! After a long week I can finally wind down and do yardwork lol
Spot on!
Thanks, Ben, best video I've seen regarding squash vine borers
Wow, thanks!
Wow..veggies looks good 👍 😊super fantastic video 📹
Thank you so much 👍
Good morning.
Thank you for the info on the squash vine borer, that was really interesting.
I seen them before but not much of a problem.
I think crop rotation with fall and spring tilling helps keep them under control.
Have a great day.
i do believe that tilling helps immensely as well.
Good Morning from Central Missouri!
Good morning 🌞
I am meeting the adjusted goals I guess. Not the cold weather crops harvests I was hoping to get before the summer stuff got out in the beds but I was able to make room with only removing the radishes that just weren't getting big enough (and also attacked by something eating the tops of the root) and a cabbage that my dog most likely destroyed. I was able to squeeze in peppers around the cabbage and broccoli while planting out my whole tomato bed. Planted a lot of seeds for sunflowers , zucchini, green beans, wax beans, another (late) attempt at peas, spinach and kale that just didn't make it with me in the hospital in early April. Did harvest some lettuce for burgers on Memorial Day. Got some fresh cilantro for fresh Pico to go with dinner the other night. My Wife got some green onions the other day for Pad Thai Chicken. So eating some out of our garden. Just not as much as I would hope.
Great tips on pest management.
Another thing you can do to mitigate crop loss is choosing resistant varieties. Last year I grew zucchini rampicante . It’s C. moschata and it was so resistant to borers and squash bugs and cucumber beetles. It was absolutely infested but just kept pumping out squash. I love this variety because the young ones taste like zucchini and the mature ones like butternut.
I highly recommend this variety for people who may not have time to treat every day.
I will still try traditional squash and zucchini but I love having the rampicante as a good to back up squash.
Sounds like a good variety. I have never had luck with resistant varieties.
greetings from far northern calif. starting to warm up here.. saw you pull up them awesome onions. they looked great.., stay kool ....
Thank you!
So far so good about vine borers.always added potassium when the squash starts to bloom supposedly they do not like the smell.never had a problem
Havrn't planted my squash yet. Started my peppers a 2 weeks ago. Maybe planting late on the squash will avoid the vine borer high season.
I’ve had the moth come thru once so far. I found eggs on stems but also way down near the soil line.
Check the base of the leaves too
Squash bugs have been pretty awful in my area, SVB minimally less damaging. I have not grown zucchini in quite a number of years because I don’t like how it grows, and the pest damage always hit me at the worst time of the summer. Now I just will buy them at the farmers market- however there are 5 different kind of winter squash growing now, 2 of them are Japanese types that are aggressive growers and I’m curious how they respond to these bugs. Already I have found squash bugs laying eggs and immediately hand picked but they were laying on a butternut variety, have not found them on the other kinds yet. Next year Seminole pumpkins will be on my list of winter squash to grow!
IDK if I stumbled upon it. Or. But I bought a box of neem seed meel from down-to-earth couple years ago. I left it out and it got wet. So I poured all the neem meel that didn't get wet into a pitcher And it filled itself up with rainwater. And I covered it once it got full. It sat on my back porch for about 3 months. When I uncovered it smells so horrible, but I think I made a concentrate. Or a ferment or something Either way, I've been after. I try to a few different strengths. I've been putting a teaspoon per gallon. Spraying the vines and the leafs of the squash and absolutely 0 problems so far this year.🤞🙏
The squash love it all the vines and leaves are praying in the morning after I spray them at night. I also use BT once every 2 weeks. And once a month I use em1. Also once a month they get composed tea.. I don't know if it's a combination. Of all those things, but the "neem spray" definitely affects them in a good way.
Neem doesn't affect the borer but helps with other pests for sure
Just lost my last zucchini yesterday to the SVB. 😫 I’m dropping some new seeds today - should have had them started and ready to go in 🤦🏽♀️). I am in south-central Texas, at the southern edge of the Texas Hill Country bordering the coastal plains. We have two or three waves of SVB every summer. It makes me crazy!! I hate spraying, but I guess I’m just going to have to wave the white flag of surrender and spray a couple of times per week to make sure I get the borers before they get me. 😭
Have you tried wood ash in your beds where your squash grows? It prevents borers for me. Kaolin clay helps as a spray.
Every year does no good for the borers here
From Raleigh, NC, squash bugs are prevalent. Thought I saw a borer egg yesterday. Ever tried Rosemary branches as deterrent?
We have rosemary planted and have used the branches. They didn't help
@@sandybottomhomestead Bummer
Thx
Patty Pan looking strong... Do you ever use spinosad?
I used to. The by is more direct
Interested in pepper topping hoss tools says no like to hear your reasoning for topping
Noted!
what about spinasad from Captain Jack for caterpillar control and beetle control?
You could try that
do you fertalize your squash and when and what type of fert. should i use. thanks man in adbvance
yes well a balanced fertilizer at planting and about once a month after that.
My father-in-law used moth balls for the SVBs. Has anyone tried them? Or even heard of using them?
Never heard of that
@@sandybottomhomestead I'll try it and let ya know how it works!
What's the length of those fencing panels that form the big arch that you walk under?
16 ft
So what is the difference between BT and DE?
Totally different uses and physical make ups of the product
Squash bugs are terrible, destroy your hard work. I have seen the squash vine borer orange cocoons in the soil when preparing the garden and feed them to the chickens. 🐓
