Appreciate all that you share about gardening, keeps me on point. Thank you. 😊
Glad you like it!
My garden is making another transformation. So far, I've dug out one raised bed, moved it to its new location (atop hardware cloth), and filled it. That was the easy one. The second raised bed is rootbound from a dogwood tree. It is probably ther prime reason the bed did so poorly this year. I am in the process of diging it out, and having to chop through feeder roots to do so. At least, they will give back some of what was taken from the soil. It will probably be tomorrow or Monday before I am finished with it. The cabbage seedlings are looking good, and soon, I will have to thin them down, but first, I may try digging up a clump and using them for transplants. I just got comformation of shipment for seeds I ordered. As soon as they arrive, I will have turnip seeds to plant. I am starting to get the first golden beet sprouts, and will sow a succession crop soon. The watermelon vines are done and need to come out. Next year, I will plant them, and cantaloupe, where I normally pole beans and cucumbers. They will get full sunlight there. The cucumbners will move to the melon bed where they will get more shade in the afternoon. This means, I will be moving from growing pole beans back to bush beans. The tomato harvest this year was a bumper crop. I have more tomatoes than I know what to do with, but making salsa is on the top of the list. My new garden arrangement will give me sixteen feet of trellis space that I can use for growing peas, and I will be able to grow snow peas too. My garden is constantly evolving, and each year, it gets more productive. I just removed my last zucchini plant, leaving me with seven empty raised beds, but not for long. Four of them will be used for growing cauliflower and broccoli. I may try my luck at Nappa Cabbage too. I'll be starting seed starts for them in about a week. It will be another month, maybe six weeks before the weather cools enough to sow seeds for carrots, Pak Choi, tatsoi, and Heart Winter Choy. That leaves my garlic and onion bed as the only empty raised bed. It needs to be topped off with compost, which I will do this month. One third of raised bed will be reserved for planting garlic in October. In October, I'll sow radish seeds too. The rest of the bed space can be used for Asian greens, and then sown with onion seeds in February. Deer are a problem from the first frost through May, so all raised beds will need to be covered with netting. That is pretty much what I have going on in my garden. The summer heat is a killer; I can't wait for fall gardening to be in full swing. Every cucumber harvested from now until the plants stop producing will go to the chickens. I've reached a point where I am too beat to battle pickleworms. Instead I'll feed them to the chickens, and be satisfied with revenge. Besides, I am getting tired of eating cucumbers. I grew way too many this year.
You are busy!
Put thise pellets in your compost this winter before the spring and it helps to jump start that too
We add a few but the chicken manure seems to do better
Morning.. Here in Texas, August is the time to try to keep what is left in the garden alive. It's a time to stay out of the heat and chill.
I can understand that
I just ordered a bag of alfalfa pellets from Amazon. Found it in the rabbit food section.
Check horse feed too
I’m here in Wilmington. About to chop these tomatoes and clean up. I really want to add a roof section I can grow some things under and keep the rain off the plants so I can ripen figs better etc. A shed has been on my list longer but it’s way more expensive. Planning and considering.
Well hey neighbor! Yup tomato season is definitely over for me. My buddies figs are all getting eaten by squirrels this year
@@sandybottomhomestead bummer. I’ll admit I took out an undisclosed number of squirrels for that reason. It was war. As many as 5-7 at a time in my yard. Now it’s very rare. A touch up a couple times and no more problem. It was kinda gross with all them tree rats running around.
Good info
Hope it helps
Oh, look ! A real garden and a real gardener. I mean this sincerely. Great video.
Well thank you!
i ordered a greenhouse for winter, i don't do 5 year plans
I hope the greenhouse works out for you!
I know you are talking about fall planting but I think if I grow tomatoes next year they have to be hybrid. My heirlooms are just so unproductive compared to what I see from others who grow hybrid varieties.
yup I agree. But heirlooms have their place in the garden.
Upset about the shade house...? Hard to understand. This is *your* garden, after all. We're gardening on an ultra-tight budget this year (massive veterinary bills but we wouldn't omit or forgo veterinary care for our four-footed household members!) so that *IF* you had decided differently and assuming we lived closer to where you are and you had said, "Old shade cloth; if you want it and think you can use it, it's yours," I'd have been glad to get it. But tell you what to be doing in your own garden??? No. No, no. Absolutely not. Trusting you keep safe this hurricane season. Much gardening love from Northeast Ohio! 😊💚💚💚💚💚😊
Yeah if i knew someone locally that wanted it I would have given to them for sure, but I am not fond of sending a headache to someone elses garden either.
Jeff from East Tennessee!! My short day onions came up. So cabbage and onions are my start to fall gardening! Just want to enjoy my fall season. Spring seems so hectic with all the seed starting!! I am seeding early this year. It was 91 degrees today. I will be fighting the heat until mid September. I do have some shaded areas that I can work with. And yes, you are going to have some kind of storm that may come your way!! It looks like trouble for the south this year!! Be safe!!
Add minerals
Mulch and making a compost
I liked the greenhouse deconstruction.😀
Awesome 🤘🤙
I thought it was awesome when you gave that shade house the heave ho! In fact, I was pretty jealous because I couldn’t allow myself to do it mentally! 😂🔨
You should try it!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Appreciate you!!!!
Glad to share it
Unsubscribed over the shade house? 😂😂😂
Yup. Some people are to sensitive lol
@@sandybottomhomestead super sensitive.
People are silly. There’s no way to make a broader assessment of your use of resources based on one video. I’m all about reducing waste, but it’s not realistic to impose a standard in which people aren’t allowed to throw away anything. It could also be argued that you made a positive impact environmentally by letting people know that those greenhouses are crap and preventing them from buying them and using resources to have them manufactured, shipped, etc. Life is complex. P.S. Not sure if the tone you used to say Baker Creek was intentional but it was great 😂❤
It was absolutely intentional 🤣. That was the statement I was going for on the shade house
Good grief, people are crazy! Your garden your rules! Blessings on safety if the hurricane comes your way!
That's what I'm saying. Looks like it going to miss us now
Wow it's time already for fall planting 6A. Putting in brassicas this evening with rain the next few days it's perfect. The rest will go in around the 15th. It will be interesting to see how hurricane season goes , September is coming soon. Have a great day!
Dang I missed your live definitely next time I learn a lot have a great night dude
It's all good it got cut off in the middle anyway
Mulch gang for life!
Gang gang
Over winter, we put compost and dead leaves from our pear tree on the dirt of the raised bed. Throughout the season, I monitor our plants for yellow leaves or other clues to see if they need liquid fertilizer in water for a fast rescue or we scatter organic granulated fertilizer in our pots and raised bed. Just harvested 3 very large, healthy green scallop squash. Best garden yet.
My garden is getting taken over by morning glories I don’t like morning glories
I never planted them. My mom said they can be pretty invasive
Uok
I'm good
Hello
Hi there
It seems like summer just started last week to me anyways… it flew way too fast! I can’t believe I’m already having to think about fall gardening! 😆
It's crazy ain't it
Jeff from East Tennessee. Cabbage growing. They just came up. Waiting on onions to come up! This fall, I will grow cabbage, onions, broccoli, kale, collards mustard greens, lettuce, spinach and some bunching onions. The heat is always a challenge. Try to keep smaller plants in shaded areas up on some tables. As the heat drops, I will move them to more and more sun.
I live in east Tennessee when do you plant your onions.do you plant short day or intermediate
I'm in Zone 8 Columbus, GA. is there still time to plant a 2nd round of potatoes, even if there mini size
Just time it around the heat
Stupid internet connection ruined a good live.
ok lol I thought something happened I was talking to myself for 10 minutes.
@@sandybottomhomestead I thought it was on my end until I went back and watched the last part. My phone was acting weird to so I think it might have been a bigger issue than just yours.
Northern NC accent I'm guessing
Nope southern
Also… have you tried Malabar spinach? Yum! Loved heat and I direct sowed some and will do more. North Tx zone 8b super hot triple digits under shade cloth.
I keep forgetting to get some seeds. It's on my radar
Kuddos to you for trying whatever you could, to keep your seedlings going in rough weather. Heartbreak for the starting over buuut I admire that you keep trying. I hate having seeds inside. I’d probably keep trying with new seeds though harsh weather is out of your control. I’m fortunate to have a greenhouse that is too heavy to blow away but my seeds pop up in a day or so bc it’s soo flamin HOT inside. I’d MacGuyver it however you can to keep this thing working. It’s all relative, you could have nothing.😊 OH YOU ASKED A QUESTION sorry! So I DO plant my seedlings outside but I grow them in 3” peat pots in a wood tray, in the raised bed they are going to be planted….BUT I have said raised bed under 30% shade cloth. They come up but I also decided it was a waste of time so I plant seeds in my raised beds under the shade cloth. So far so good.❤
wont that wood rot over time?
4th year and no rot. But eventually yes
Jeff from East Tennessee! Four different kind of cabbage just came up and look great!! Waiting on bulbing onions to come up! That’s it for now. My garden is absolutely packed full of summer veggies. Some tomatoes are starting to die out. They may hang on if we don’t get too much rain. Two maybe three weeks. Hope to get soil ready with some mushroom compost and replant with short day onions. So fall planting is coming.
That's awesome
This year has flown by. Can't believe we are already at fall planting.
It's absolutely crazy
I will be making some changes on some beds and hopefully I can plant garlic
I hope the changes go well for you
Yes, this summer is FLYING by! Right now am harvesting so many peppers, onions and garlic. Huge harvest of red potatoes (originally from the grocery store). Tomatoes starting to put out lots of fruit. Our lettuce provides salad daily. Today am planting my succession seedlings from my greenhouse. Still having problems getting any cabbages. Will try to direct sow. Brassica seedlings going out today. Thanks for the planning push.
I hope it helps
I`m expanding my garden by laying down sheets of brown cardboard and layers of grass clippings, leaves, pine straw, rotted wood, weeds, green leaves from mimosa trees, vegetable waste, leaf mold and forest soil. Within a week of doing this and watering it daily mushrooms grow in it. I`ve abandoned tilling. I might turn or loosen the soil with a hand tool before planting seeds, transplants or potatoes but now I plant peas/beans as nitrogen fixers in warm weather and continually add organic matter as mulch and new soil from the forest and I`ve had incredible results. Certain areas of the garden get all the stalks and leaves from okra in piles, old bean, squash, melon and cucumber vines and other waste and the rolly pollies devour it and turn it into fertilizer. I add some chopped mowed over leaves and grass clippings, burn some leaves, twigs and pine straw on top, then cover it in forest soil in fall and plant winter greens and tubers.
Most of my Cape Gooseberry plants are massive but just beginning to bloom. I bought some regular Ground Cherry seeds and the test plant began blooming when it was 4 inches tall. A couple of the Cape Gooseberry plants have produced fruits and they`re delicious. I`m gonna cover them with deep leaves and pine straw and try to overwinter them plus grow one inside in a 5 gallon hydro bucket for cuttings for a very early start next year. I`ve noticed that cuttings bloom much sooner. I`m experimenting with Ground Cherry cuttings and just planted more seeds in sandy forest soil from a large muddy 3 ft deep sandbar in a bottom wash between rolling hills. I filled a large 12 inch deep cardboard box with it in an area that gets great fall sun. My 1st & 2nd year fig trees are huge already and producing fruits and the 1st year mullberry trees are approaching 10 ft tall even though I`ve topped and trimmed them repeatedly. I have the fig trees completely covered in fine mesh row cover material because the young Cardinals hatched this year were pecking the tiny green figs. I feed them though and they`re like pets.
the ground cherry plants should be just fine. We usually do alot of cuttings for tomatoes.
@@sandybottomhomestead 90% of my tomato plants are from cuttings. Some are from plants in 2022. I paid one dollar each from Pinocchio Orange micro dwarf tomatoes and keep making more and more plants from the originals plus my best cherry tomato plant. The Pinocchio plants average 8 inches tall so I put three in one 5 gal hydro bucket with a four 2 inch mesh basket lids. They`re prolific producers and make several dozen tomatoes each time they bloom. Cherry tomato varieties all keep producing in the Louisiana heat unlike big varieties so I stick with those mostly and bring them inside for winter fruits. Each watt of LED light produces one watt of heat in winter so why not use the heat for food?
Looking good.
Thank you!
We cover the top of our 4m x 2.8m greenhouse in 70% shade cloth in summer. Also spent a lot of time on the foundations. They're concrete panels which are insulated on the inside with 100mm foam panels. The floor was excavated down to 300mm and 2 refrigeration panels placed in it. Then 150mm of sand, some geo textile and then a layer of gravel. In the sand layer we've put 20mm Pex pipe for heating. A propane heater with a small flame heats a water tank and a slow flow pump passes the water through the Pex tube. The heat is absorbed by the sand and gently heats the greenhouse day and night in winter. Minimal heat is lost into the ground due to the insulation panels below the sand layer.
Hey. Is your homestead in Holly Ridge?
Great video. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
