I just took a full 18 count tray of cuttings from my “gasping their last breaths” spring tomatoes, hoping to have them rooted in good in time for the late summer/fall tomato crop. I’ve never tried doing this with cuttings before. The stink bugs and leaf footed bugs pretty much decimated my spring tomato crop, so if this doesn’t work, I’ll just chalk it up to education and keep buying farm stand tomatoes til next year. Fingers crossed!
I’m in south-central Texas so I think I’m gonna take your advice and wait a few more weeks before starting any cool season seed. I’d like to have broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and collards for sure. This week or early next week, I’ll be transplanting my okra starts out into my full, blazing-summer-sun plot. I don’t know why, but they LOVE it in that spot. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Heya buddy! Its time! I seeded collards, broccoli, cabbage, and parris island lettuce from the BYG seed shop this morning. I have another group of seeds I'll get started this afternoon and then a few others over the next several weeks. TTYL! #chicagogardening

Jeff from East Tennessee! First, no rain so far. It’s getting dry here. I am happy! Yes a rain would be great but July has killed my garden with rain!! The first rain that came last year was over 3 inches in one day. It was about this time last year. And it went on raining all of July!!
I think the first fall seeding will be my short day onions. Last year my onions grew slow! I ending up planting them around the middle of October. That was a good time but they were just a little small for me. Another thing is that my garden is full to the top with summer plants!! I want to enjoy my summer garden as long as possible!! This stuff has to come off before I can replant!! Cabbage can take a long time to plant. But it’s just too early for me. I will get started sooner this year but not just yet!! Thanks!!

Tomorrow, I'm starting my brassicas for Fall. Planting cabbages, kale and brussel sprouts. I'll put them in my tiny greenhouse. Have to protect them from my darn squirrels and chipmunks, who dig up EVERYTHING. I could NEVER leave my seedlings unprotected on a table outside. Have to get myself a big bag of Perlite. This year, I successfully planted my seedlings with vermiculite on top...worked well. Always good info here on this channel.

I'm in the desert SW, definitely planning my fall garden, but with temps anywhere from 99 to 105 lately, still to early for me. However, I have realized I need to time things better in spring next year. This year and last have been much warmer early on, and needed to get most of my summer crops in by mid/late March. Potatoes were tricky, getting them in asap after freezes but with time to grow before the heat kills them in May. Definitely changing my planting times.

I'm in Tucson so I feel your pain. Potatoes have been tricky for me. I think the answer is to plant early and plan on covering in case of frost. Green magic broccoli does really well here. I recommend staying away from most heirlooms here. They just don't do as well. F1 hybrids are the way to go.

A wise farmer once told me if you don't lose some seedlings, you either planted too late or too early. This is part of gardening, gambling with Mother Nature. Keep on doing what you're doing. Love your attitude, sir. Have a wonderful Tuesday. Garden blessings to you.

We have had some unusual weather in AZ. It has been raining. I'll be planting green beans, Seminole pumpkins, and red kuri squash in the next couple of weeks. For fall I start seeds around September. Brussel sprouts and celery will be first to start. Our fall garden is really a winter garden.

Started brassicas first but had to redo do to a chipmunk eating the seeds out of the starting tray, had to move them indoors.
This critter is eating the lettuce seeds out of the tomato pots.
Put the rat traps out with peanut butter coated with seeds.
    Have a great day!

Ben I'm holding back on my fall starts this year. Not to be a negative Nancy, but with all of this drought we've been having here in our area of the SE coast of NC, and the higher ocean temps, I think our chance for a major hurricane this year is pretty high. I pray that I'm wrong.

    • @sandybottomhomestead

Good morning, Ben. You didn't get your seed packets wet when you watered those flats did you? I'll be planting for Brassicas! I am determined to have more broccoli, at least a cabbage, cauliflower...More peas, a second round of tomatoes and squash. Our weather patterns seem quite similar though I am more midlands SC than your coastal NC. It is Hot, humid and not getting any afternoon pop-up storms as usual this time of year.

I went through three of those bags of perlite this year, potting and selling 4" seedlings and potting peppers into 8 gallon pots. I go heavy on perlite for the bottoms of the pots to encourage drainage and reduce root rot.
