    Last night I was watching an interview the filmmaker Terry Gilliam did recently, and he spoke about the same thing in regards to current culture and there being too many distractions. I'm glad that some artists are discussing this and I think it's a step forward that more creative people are becoming more conscious of what they listen to/watch or how much they consume certain media and the effects this may have on their work and/or ability to create original work. At the end of Fellini's 8 1/2 there's a monologue said by a character that is so relevant to today, I really recommend watching or just looking that part up online. It's funny that Bradford mentions a "void" because there's a line about that in there too. Here's some of it: "No need for nostalgia or remorse. Destroying is better than creating when we're not creating those few truly necessary things. But is there anything so just and true in this world that it has the right to live?”

    Wow, what Bradford said about culture and music was really thought-provoking.
    I feel like Bradford is either a journalist's dream or a journalist's nightmare. For some he does their work for them - they don't need to ask a question because he just talks and talks and loves doing it. For some he makes it really awkward and difficult haha, and I've seen lots of interviewers completely fail to rise to his level when he's in that sort of mischievous mood. This interview was the former, thankfully.

    There are something really important on what he's talking about. Zygmunt Baumann touches on this theme on his works. I mean, the culture is ending up, ou generation, our era is liquified, our time, our human relations are so quick and end up so fast, and publicity, via internet, is just always controlling and molding our way of thinking, unfortunately this affects our culture, that does not have an identity. That's so sad... :/

    Decline of an underground scene is kinda wrong; it has pivoted because the internet. Now you see trends pop up and go so quickly. You just gotta know where to look.
    I don't think having stuff readily available is bad either. We always always always criticise of over saturation of technology (see: every film since 2000), but never on self-control. It's like people complaining they can't read e-books compared to hardback (admittedly I was like this before) -- don't you see that's a reflection of you and not the medium itself? My opinion, anyway, is self-control is everything, especially with the internet/digital outlets.

      "don't you see that's a reflection of you and not the medium itself? My opinion, anyway, is self-control is everything, especially with the internet/digital outlets."
      To say that media does not reflect the individual is a huge understatement. One could easily argue that streaming services and the Internet in general has created a devalue of content and consequently less self control to content itself. Media IS an extension of the individual.

    • @jamiecal11
      @jamiecal11 Před 8 lety +4

      +ern isern wait, I said the medium, dude. As in, how we access the media. And yeah, I've heard about devaluing content, but again, I find that to be more of a reflection on the individual than anything. I utterly hate the object fetishism culture we have, especially in regards to vinyl. It's become a status symbol more than anything these days.

  • @ExcitingHat
    @ExcitingHat Před 5 lety +3

    In my opinion he almost makes some interesting or somewhat original points but just falls short of the mark. He seems too quick to doubt himself and worries about coming across as a hypocrite. To me it looks like he suffers heavily from cognitive dissonance. I really like Deerhunter's music. Not sure if I like his mostly aimless rant. I'm surprised people find this particularly interesting or important. Maybe he feels at an age and at a time where he's not the young, cool kid in an exciting world anymore, now he's working in a bit of a hollow industry/culture as an adult in which he wishes held more meaning and authenticity. I somewhat agree that culture now holds little importance in the modern western world. The problems of a throw-away, internet, everything now, consumer based culture. I get the points he makes but to me it's very obvious, not very thought provoking or interesting. I also think it's simply too cynical a way to think. I guess if it makes people think about what culture means to them or how one can be more active within our own communities to further facilitate or create culture; than maybe something can be taken away from this. Also, is he drunk or just like this?
