Mac, in high school my gay and bi friends dubbed me their "ally friend"... and it turns out I was just Ace all along. Nobody was surprised when I told them, just happy they had a name for it.
Me, but only in Freshman year, as I came out to them Sophomore year.

Felt on that, tho i figured out i was more queer than i thowt eventually... But that took me til my late 20s cuz i just hadnt met any enbies in prson til then
On the sexuality side tho, i was oft assumed to be gay at first by ppl but rly just didnt feel anythin there and had personally ruled that out at an early age and just assumed i was, as we all seem to think at one pt; straight but broken
For me personally i didnt know many out queer ppl even til my 20s, tho turns out most my friend group was queer and most my friend group was neurodivergent too xD We just didnt know either of those things back then heh
But by my late teens i was the "ally friend" to quite a few ppl as some of my friends came out and as i also just met queer ppl in the less than a yr i spent at college in portland (OR), and then met even more when i found this game called Amtgard (a live action roleplay, medieval fantasy and free; exists across most of USA in most major cities)
It was in my first or second yr playin Amtgard that i figured out i wasnt the ally friend; i was the ace friend. But... And this is critical... I didnt know i was queer then, not rly; i very much was enmeshed in anti-ace rhetoric id seen online and thus nvr rly felt that pride was for me... cuz its not like i was gay or anythin
Even when i did figure out i felt some sorta pan feelings (used to say i was demipanro, now i just say im an a pan-oriented angled aroace; which just describes how i feel about my QPRs essentially), i still didnt feel i was queer enuf to belong at pride
I wish id been able to overcome that feeling back then, i wish id seen more radical acceptance of asexuals in the community; i was always within grasp of seein another nonbinary person in front of my eyes and havin the realisation of what id been masking for so long id forgot it entirely
Thankfully when i was 27 i got that exp and i soon after came out as enby and then went to my first pride events and started to learn id belonged there for yrs prior, even aside from the gender stuff
This is actually one of the biggest reasons i try to be so vocally supportive of aces or aros in the community even if theyre cis, endosex, and hetero or heteroro; theyre not alloallo, and that makes them part of the LGBTQIA+ community. And i will fight any gatekeepers who try to gatekeep them out of our community that they belong in so badly... Esp moreso given how many of them are queer in other ways and can only rly find that out by seein their fellow queers in all their glory
Oh notably, i was mistaken for gay not just by friends; but strangers and jerkwad bigots alike.
One of my earliest memories is of bein 11 or 12 (yea, my memory doesnt go back much further than 11 heh, i wonder why...... 😅) and ridin my bike to the library, on the left side of the road so i cud see oncomin traffic and not get hit; next to a steep cliffside drop to the lake below
This teen drives up in one of those big trucks, you know the kind their kind drive, and spots me, then swerves into the left lane so he can stick his head out and yellow "F____t!" in my ear. I dont know if that was the first time i was called that, but i know it became a regular occurence goin forward.
I nearly fell down that cliff bcuz he rattled me so much with that sudden loud slur in my ear. I only barely managed to just hit my brakes hard and thrust my feet down to steady myself; literally cudve been killed from it, so that memory is very clear in my mind... Despite that most memories i have not even the barest visuals to go with them bcuz of my aphantasia gettin in the way there

I wud get called the f slur every other month or so back then and it only rly slowed down cuz i started coverin my whole body with a trenchcoat and just lookin like the nerd you dont want to bully bcuz of the shite youd heard about columbine and the "trenchcoat mafia" (totes media sensationalism not based in reality but still)

Honestly, I love that clip about asexuality. I am ace, and I struggled a lot with feeling like I was broken or like I was missing something fundamental. I didn't understand how everyone around me could be experiencing something I wasn't without it meaning there was something fundamentally wrong with me. Feeling the cracks, worrying that something is broken or missing, is an extremely relatable thing. I participated in sexual interactions as my attempt to sort of self-treat a perceived mental issue, and I was miserable. I'm so lucky I found a wife that understands that I don't experience sexual attraction, and even if she doesn't relate, we have come to an understanding and always strive to be patient and empathize with each other.
