Very good point, but as a gay myself, it’s so frustrating. Like it upsets me to my core that people don’t want me to ever be happy, because I’m a female that’s into other females. So I don’t deserve happiness, acceptance, or even in some cases, safety? Wanted to leave a comment specifically about the beating part: my family was extremely abusive towards me, my father in particular. He would beat me to a pulp, we would fight without my "mother" giving a damn and catering to my older brother. Some beatings were leaving me just a dead weight in a bed, and the last fight we had before I ran away ended up in me getting knife scars from my "father". So no, my guy, no beating could ever make me straight. Because it's not a habit to fix, it's not a trait to adapt, it's simply who I am. No matter how much you will bleach your hair, the natural roots will still grow.

Even if beating could make a person straight (vs potentially making them too afraid to be openly authentically themselves) that's still wrong. Like physically attacking another human being, your child no less, is still so much worse and more harmful than somebody merely existing as a gay person. Beating a child for things outside their control is evil and monstrous there's no other way to look at it. Homophobes really be out here willing to become monsters rather than just let somebody be gay, and totally unable to see they're the biggest problem and always have been.

I'm going to a Catholic university and I'm nonbinary. When we had orientation, they had pronoun stickers and respected my they/them pronouns. I was shocked but alao incredibly happy. It goes to show that not all religious groups are oppressive to the LGBTGIA+ community.

My mom is Mormon and she accepts the LGBTQ community.
She's not going to march out in the street with them but she'll treat them like humans.
But then there's the actual church she attended for 5 years who put a 12 year old gay boy in front of the church body and tried to pray away the gay.

My mom wanted me to go to a Mormon university after I graduated.

I've always had a strong disliking for the Mormons and now that disliking is justified even more.
Yea, I'm sitting here wondering how my Catholic elementary/middle school would handle transgender and non-binary issues. People being gay? No issue, as anyone dating provided discussion (they had a 6 ft rule if they found out some kids - at the middle school level - were dating), and the councilors were usually more about acceptance than anything else. Gender issues? I could see it depend on who the teachers, principle, pastor happen to be at the time. I could foresee a lot of "you are loved" but "we won't use your pronouns" talk. I'm glad you had a positive experience.
In a related but different story, a friend of mine's lesbian mother had their marriage ceremony at a Catholic church, run by the pastor xD
It wasn't "officially" recognized as a marriage by the church, but there are even commitment ceremonies in tradition that allow same-sex partnerships (between "friends")

That first guy is a great example of why I tell people I’m “gay” instead of “lesbian” because the word “lesbian” now makes me think of hyper sexualization, and how straight men think that we exist for their gaze. Guess what, we don’t. It feels worse because I’m confident in my sexuality, even though I’m fairly young, so it makes the sexualizing extra gross.

A couple times a year, I got the opportunity to teach a ton of kids at my high school about sex, gender, and Expression/presentation. One of the things I talked about every time was intersexuality, and I was constantly appalled at how many people not only couldn’t tell me anything about intersexuality, but hadn’t ever even heard of the term “intersex.” You can imagine the shock on their faces when I told them that approximately 2% of the world was intersex, which is the same percent as people who are naturally redheaded. This is all to say: I want you to know that you are seen, intersex folks, by me (A Queer student from Colorado) and a whole load of kids from my old high school who educated themselves as much as possible to be the best kind of Allies they could be. Y’all are seen and loved by us, even if you don’t feel you align with the LGBT+ community. ♥️

My grandpa and I actually got into an argument about intersex people a few months ago. He kept insisting that it was only a birth defect and not something natural, no matter how much I tried to explain that it is indeed a valid gender. One day a magazine arrived from a company my mom often ordered. After looking at it for some time she had me look at a picture, asking me what was wrong with it. There were two men, one of them white and the other one with darker skin. One had their head in the other’s lap, and they both looked happy. I didn’t see anything wrong with it, and in confusion I asked if it was the fact they had different skin colors (my parents also didn’t teach me how to not say racist things). My mom didn’t say that was the issue, but the fact there were two men, and told me she was unsubscribing from the monthly magazines. I was just so confused, like how is that bad…? Now I’m a lesbian using she/they pronouns. I wish I could’ve discovered my identity earlier in life, but at least I’ve left the cult that calls itself a church…

A month later my dad pulled me out of the church I started attending church with him.
Now I'm a bisexual male and consider the Mormons a cult.
I don't hate my mom but she knows my emotions towards Mormonism and it's never brought up in conversation anymore.
Mormons are really nice people on the surface but behind the scenes they're very close minded and stubborn people.

The same thing happened to me. I didn't know gay or trans existed till a church friend had a friend who came out and explained it to me. And when I came out I was put back in the closet and invalidated, and told im worse than a murderer :// good news though, upon leaving the church I've also been happier and started learning more about paganisim and spirituality :D along with self acceptance
