Levi’s has been an a gay friendly company since loooong before it was “popular” they started recognizing domestic partner benefits for their employees in 1992 and they helped in the fight for marriage equality in California in 2008. Not to mention all they did for the AIDS epidemic. I hate rainbow capitalism, but I’ll give credit where credit is due, Levi’s puts their money where their mouth is.
Levi's pride collection definitely understood the assignment. I could actually see myself wearing some of the outfits if I had any confidence lol
Meanwhile, with Target... I like rainbows as much as the next gay, but their collection is just _too much_ rainbow. I'm also pretty confused by the checker pattern... but at least they're trying, I guess?

Levi is a perfect example of what the LGBTQIA actually want and isn't just obvious marketing bs.
I'm not surprised Levi's had a genuine collection. They've actually been kind of supportive of queers since the 1990s. apparently in 2008 they were the only company to show support for same sex marriage in cali.
Levi's always makes sure the girls, gays, and theys always have something to wear that's fabulous 🤭✨

It's sort of like how jumpsuits are called such bc they were primarily worn, at first, by ppl who jumped out of planes w parachutes in 1919 (and later were seen as _v fashionable_ and so were worn by civilians).
However, none of this matters in _this_ case bc this clothing item is short!! And therefore should be called a romper!! (Romper is a shorter version of a jumpsuit, originally created for children (and now in more modern times adults as well) to "romp" around in during summer/spring outdoor play.)

Walked by in a mall and saw Burlington coat factory doing a pride and two things occurred:
1. She’s still alive
2. Godawful pride stuff
Burlington used to be pretty decent, like Ross-level quality. Now (at least the one near me) is only partially lit during store hours, like how Kmart was at the end of their life, and the clothes are... i don't know, stuff that I think only poor people would wear. Lot's of stretchy and synthetic fabrics.
Edit: I offended poor people. I'm not going to double down, but I think it'd be kind of cowardly to delete my comment.
So the polite description is those clothes seem like something people who have nowhere to be and no one to impress would wear. Clothes that aren't nice enough to wear to work, church, nor the club. Cheap clothes you'd throw on before you went out to put gas in your car. Clothes that could not be 'dressed up' with tasteful jewelry. Not saying that poor people have nowhere to be, but these are not clothes they should wear if they do.

Two things! One, as a certified Yeehaw Land person (born in Arkansas), I and my fellow Southern Gays absolutely reclaim queer and have for years. I'm Texan and most people use it reclaimed, but my mom is almost violently opposed to its use (she was bi in the 80s and 90s)
West Virginia (don't start with that song), but live in GA, and the only way I've heard "queer" outside of LGBTQ+ people using it is really old southern backwoods people saying "queer" meaning "odd" or "strange." (Example: "That mural on the side of that building is rather queer, isn't it?" and it's just graffiti that says something stupid like "worms")
NEVER have I heard it used as a slur except on television.
South Carolina here. It’s not really widely used amongst us in the community, but those who do use it, have reclaimed it. Never really heard it used as a slur around here.

Queer is a slur in the way that you get really concerned when someone who looks straight says it. A group of middle schoolers walked up to me and my friends in an amusement park and asked if we were queers. We spent like a whole minute just looking at them trying to figure out if they were gay or trying to be problematic.
No offense, but how does someone "look" straight, and how do I avoid looking straight? I want other queer people to know I'm one of them and that I'm a safe person.

The Levi’s collection was actually really tasteful! It’s not quite my aesthetic, but I really enjoyed seeing it. It felt like more thought was put into it than “slap a rainbow on it” or “list our regular merch and call it the pride section”

The moon phases could be good. Something like make the phases with the flag and make it say something like "The only phase I know belongs to the moon" or "The moon has phases, not me"

I had no idea queer was seen as a slur in the south still?? I’m a southern bi women and I just tell people “im queer” because folks down here seem to wrap their head around being “queer” easier than being “bi”. Also I love checker print 😭 but that could just be because im goth and have a very alt fashion sense

Coin_Eater I live in the south (in a city though) and people 100% use queer in the reclaimed way here. Not everywhere is the same. (al though i do acknowledge the predominance of homophobia that is especially greater in the south)
It really depends on where you're at in the South. It's probably not a big deal in most cities, but the further you go into the sticks it might be used differently.
i also live in the south and have never heard queer used as a slur personally. i think because the community has reclaimed it most everyone just recognize it as another lgbt identity

I used to work for one of the companies that designed these shirts. Thank you so much for highlighting that the artists themselves are often queer and it’s not their personal decisions that drive the artwork that ends up in the stores!
