I've used wooden dowels close to the diameter of the actual shaft to keep needle bearings in place on transmission countershaft gear clusters.
The bearings stay in place and the gear cluster is aligned with the case holes by the dowel so the metal shaft usually slides through fairly easily pushing the dowel out as it goes.

I have a troy built tiller 1980's model. When I put it in gear and start moving the trans starts whining. The cast is full of oil and everything works but I don't think it should be making this sound.

I have a horse that's making alot of noise while under a load tilling.. the front lower pulley has almost 1/2 inch of slop back and forth.Any ideas what it could be? It doesn't want to keep tilling it's like somethings slipping.

I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. I just replaced the tiller tine shaft, bearings, and bronze worm gear on a 1984 troy bilt horse III. After I put the tines back on there is a lot of wobble in the shaft with the tines on. What did I do wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

did you set the gap between the housing and the cap proper . this will set the taper bearings gap

Your gear selector is up or down. It's somewhere in between. Trader roll it while you're adjusting that's how I found out mine. If it still don't roll maybe you got something else going on.

The axle bushings were worn and will cause oil leaks at the seals as well as the sealing surface on the axle was damaged. I think people only ever change the engine oil and gearbox oil gets neglected. I am restoring one now and same parts are tore up on mine as well as the low speed small gear

I have to chuckle that TroyBilt calls a gear shifter a clutch.
