Lewis Black's Rantcast #62 - Tornadoes in December? Mother Nature Must Be Pissed

  • This week's Rantcast comes from an undisclosed location in Florida. As your host tours the Sunshine state, it's important for him to not just maintain social distancing, but to hide from the sun-baked masses entirely. The citizenry there acts as though there's no global pandemic occurring and mask wearing is not even an afterthought. Despite this alternate reality, the shows in Florida have gone well, with audiences who have not forgotten how to behave in a theatre and may be the only people in the state who civilly comply with a mask requirement. The only downside is that tickets for the show in Jacksonville have not sold well (this is not something new) leading Lewis to wonder what other excitement is to be had in Jacksonville.
Meanwhile the news this week was dominated by the tornadoes in Kentucky and surrounding states, a meteorological phenomenon rarely seen at this time of year. Something is clearly terribly wrong with the climate for this to be happening as winter approaches. Not so rare, unfortunately, was that there was yet another school shooting, a event that can't even be called a tragedy any more, because a tragedy is something that you actually try to prevent, but it happens anyway. The responses from certain members of Congress were as predictable as the calls for thoughts and prayers, with one representative, coincidentally, sending out holiday cards asking Santa for ammo for Christmas. Would they be used to defend the Douglas fir in living room? This kind of holiday card leads one to wonder what kind of weaponry the wise men brought the baby Jesus along with the myrrh and the frankincense. Also, Lewis notes the passing of Bob Dole and recounts his own encounter with the former Kansas Senator and presidential candidate.
The live rants come from Princeton, NJ with submissions about traffic, bad drivers, and bats.

It's just wrong that your diatribe is the voice of reason in difficult times - but it is. A crazy old man that continues to be a breath of fresh air. For my part, your rants are just reminiscing (and pontificating) with an old friend. Of course you should be compensated for every part of the performance art. Glad to hear your mother is still around - mine is as well at 91 and is still a woman you don't want to mess with - not ever. Bob Dole is smiling down as much as he can for a comedian, I'd guess. Thanks for hanging in there and ranting sir! It makes me feel slightly less crazy for a while.

Very glad you made it! Tornadoes in December are only unusual in intensity and that last night we had them in the northern central states instead of southern states. But having a derecho like you sheltered in your truck during isn't common and I am not sure, but I think its the first derecho recorded in the winter months? Sheltered in our home in KS with 50 mph sustained winds and 70-80 mph gusts. Other than tree limbs, power outage, and part if our privacy fence blowing down, we are unscathed and power is already back at my house.

I grew up in St. John Parish, Louisiana, and one of my earliest memories is my best friend's house being hit by a tornado at Christmastime--1983 maybe? My very-first elementary school 'boyfriend' had shrapnel scars on his throat, and 7-8-year-old me absolutely believed a tornado was going to kill me or take away all my shit. (If the headless horseman or breaking the Word of Wisdom or the laws of chastity didn't strike me down first, obviously.)
Turns out hurricane flood waters and neighborhood (and family) looting should've been my REAL childhood fear. :P

And where I lived was just a regular type city, no high crime area, no ghetto. A truly general area like so many others. The students also had to use see-through book bags/back packs. Was/is it horrible that these rules were necessary? Yes, it was/is. Was I glad that they were mandated? Yes, every single day that my two daughters went off to school. About two dozen tornadoes happen yearly in the U.S. but my God! They usually aren't like the ones this year. This is insanity, but the people who love to deny climate change quickly scramble together and proclaim something like, "Why, back in ought six my great grandpa told me a Christmas Eve 'nader done picked up his cabin and hurled it three miles. Sucker landed in the river." They'll never admit this outbreak was abnormal until their brains are splattered against a tree trunk. God help us. We need it.

Except for the bit about Christmas is the birth of Jesus (it's not - Jewish scholars, historians, and even the Bible itself doesn't place his birth in mid-winter (our calendar late December). More likely it was in the fall or spring depending on whose interpretation you agree with. But this is *your* rant, not mine :) ) this rantcast has become one of my favorites. We love your work and hope you continue to keep us aware of the stupidity around us for many years to come. I hope to see you at a show the next time you can travel to Denmark.

After we lost John McCain, Bob Dole was the last “Republican” I can think of who was worthy of the name. RIP!
BTW, when it comes to having an infection, the only thing that makes Strep Throat possibly slightly m *less* awful than COVID is that Strep responds to treatment with antibiotics. Had that particular bacteria during Thanksgiv ing once; when swallowing anything, even liquid, it went down like a ball of razor blades!
    Keep us laughing Lew 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!
(I’ve sometimes wondered if comedians in general, but African-American and Jewish ones in particular, were given a terrible and unenviable mission by God, to tell the truth to “Profit-driven Protestants” and “Anti-intellectual Catholics.”

African Americans are the real Jew(el)s, by blood line. The others are religious converts, who often can trace their lineage to Khazar.

@D Sullivan I first registered and voted as a Republican. I looked at the horrors and registered Independent, then Democrat because I couldn't vote in the primaries as an Independent. I've been all three. I know the parties' histories yet I still have to choose. I've done my own thinking and research. Not easy but worth it.

@D Sullivan Yes. Had I not, I would have switched before Trump was elected. Now that I know more about other presidents, I wouldn't have waited that long. I didn't like Clinton. But he was great for our economy. The Bushes were . . . nightmares if you go back to their beginnings.

Unfortunately, November and December tornadoes aren’t as common as we’d think. Dixie gets a decent amount of them, and the only thing that makes them worse is they’re more often than not after sunset. Damaging, long-track tornadoes? That’s more of a rarity that time of year for sure.
