    The title isn’t accurate unless you add this at the end: “ ……… for now”. It has been discontinued only about a year ago and the huge premium jump was expected. Right now, it’s time for a breather until new collectors start to realize that there’s no other Sub with a green dial. For sure the prices will dip a bit before it starts to creep up again. I don’t know when it’ll be, but the way Rolex trends go, it’s hard to say that the Hulk has reached it’s peak.

  • @dooks85

    Great vid. I like your sense of humour there with the 'b&j ' style intro to the straps. I think interest in the Hulk has dimmed largely because it's no longer available 'at retail'. This means the dream if owning one (for most mere mortals) has vanished.

      Thanks Colin! I’m glad you appreciated that. Yeah I agree with your point. Funny thing, the Hulk was actually one of the watches readily available at retail until around 2016. watching this video now in March 2023 I would have to agree that it's lost attention. Post Covid lockdown, with high interest rates & inflation the hype has since cooled down. The Hulk can be purchased for around $20k. That's a good opportunity to buy right now before it becomes popular once more. Because it's discontinued & a very sought after model, it will always be in high demand. In 20, 30, 40 years from now when a new generation of collector looks back at the Rolex vintage catalog, they will be hunting the Hulk. It can only go up in price. People say watches are not investments but that is incorrect no matter what you believe. Auction results are proof. Watches are no different to stocks or any other traded commodity. There will be bull & bear markets. You just have to buy when market sentiment is low, which is right now. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Submariner and rumours are that Rolex will release a solid gold Hulk. If this is true then the steel Hulk will be on the rebound as collectors scramble to buy the bargains that are currently available on the steel version, especially that we have seen silly numbers on the Hulk before, so why is it not possible again?

    Regarding the Hulk, I think you hit the nail on the head; it's just not that interesting. It's a perfectly decent watch around MSRP or possibly slightly above, but at £15k it's ludicrously overvalued - you can get a very nice watch collection for that price. It only makes sense when viewed through the lens of the current Rolex mania.

      Yachtmaster would hold a lot better value than any of the datejusts. But if you like the Datejust more then try to secure an allocation for the 36mm Palm Fronds (only if you like the dial ofcourse) as those seem to be going strong.
      For Yachtmaster I’d go with a blue dial as that’s the most desirable and I think good looking as well.
      Another watch to consider in your range would be the 2007 - 2019 GMT Master 2 116710 LN.
      As for the OP41 (actually only 39.5mm), I don’t see them worth their premium right now.

    This video lacks so much about what makes a watch collectible and special. You at least got one thing right and that the fact that the Submariner is the most iconic and sought after Rolex model ever. What you completely left out of what makes a watch truly collectible and that Dial color, condition, and a availability. Rolex released this watch in 2010 and it ranked and I bought my first Hulk at a 10% discount. Fast forward to 2015 and most every Rolex AD had a 5+‘year waiting list for this specific watch and most stopped putting people on the “list.” And this is not a true “hype watch” but it’s popularity and why so many people talked about it is because the demand far exceeded demand, and when a watch become that difficult to get people won’t ever stop talking about it bc they know they will never get one. So let’s review what we have in the Hulk: Its the most Iconic Rolex Sports Model that is the only steel Sub with colored dial and ceramic Bezel, the only Rolex Green on Green watch ever produced, and due to an awful launch production numbers were drastically lowered as a result of demand, and the watch didn’t catch fire till half way through its production run, and I’m willing to bet there are 2-3 Times as many 116610LN produced between 2010-2020. I’m not knocking you as everyone is entitled to there opinion, but the hype around this watch was naturally generated as a result demand far out weighing supply, and when a watch or any item is hard to get that’s when people start talking about it bc they know they will likely never have the chance to own a new 116610LV. You want to talk about hype watches, do a video on Richard Mille, as that is a hype watch. Rolex is an institution and by far the most well positioned brands in the world. Also the way you speak about this watch makes me honestly believe that you do understand but made this video for reaction purposes, and hey it worked bc I never comment but you are just straight up incorrect in your “assessment” of this time piece. I’d love to hear you thought in the current SS Daytona with the ceramic black bezel and panda dial 116500LN, a watch that is selling at 210% premium on Chrono24. If the Hulk is a Hype Watch then what makes this Daytona the hottest most talked about watch after a Patek Nautilus 5711? To all the viewers he see this post before it’s likely deleted, this guy likely has great content but this video on the Hulk is so far off and probably click bait, because it sure got me lol.

      I love the detail and effort you put into your comment mate. You certainly don’t need to apologize for grammar or the convolutions of the English language. You’ve done a great assessment 👍.
      I have done critical videos on the 5711, 116500LN, 116610LN, 116508, 116660, 124300 and Richard Mille will come in a few weeks as well. Just check out the channel home page because there are too many links to post here.
      The video is just to share my opinion on the Hulk. I love the watch for what it is but it’s blown out of context unnecessarily. I believe the term iconic should be reserved for something that has withstood the test of time - 20+ years. Also Green is a trend at the moment. Never has been previously so that needs to be proofed by the test of time as well. I do make strong titles on all my videos because I want my opinion to reach people. It’s my intention to get my foot in the door and then it’s up to the viewer to decide what they think of my opinion, whether it’s good or bad. Otherwise all the time and effort (min 12+ hours per video) gets wasted and reaches no one.
      The other reason is I do have strong opinions about these topics, and instead of trying to get everyone to like me I’d rather share my opinion and accept constructive responses: critical or appreciative.
      Perhaps I’ll do a state of the collection video sometime eventually.

    • @wcudahy
      @wcudahy Před 3 lety

      @@StandardTime I believe I understand your position more now so thank you. I am 34 and young but received my watch obsession from my Father, and together we have built a world class collection having learned many lessons along the way, especially with Rolex. We lost on many watches that we believed to be good buys bc they were safe, but over the 20+ years since I became passionate about watch to me I learned that the items that become truly special are the quirkier/more misunderstood watches Rolex produces. First its rare that Rolex takes any risks, but when they do it can lead to cult classics and while the watches may not be hits at the time of the release, they always seem to come around. Take the new Oyster Perpetual, a super hot watch that is directly tied to the old Stella Dials produced in the 80s i believed (which completely tanked), but the new OP is selling at high premiums. Now think about the Original Green Steel Bezel the Kermit Sub that began production in early 2000, which was not a very hot watch but gained a following, and likely inspired the Hulk which also started slow but then BLEW up and is absolutely a top 5 most sought after Rolex Ever Produced. So Green is not a new trend at all, its actually probably the most wanted dial color after any kind of Panda. I can havent looked in ages but I bet the most expensive Daytona is the modern solid gold with Green Bezel. Im not trying to cause issue or problems with you, I just dont agree with the "facts" that are being misconstrued. But I too can be completely wrong and will know sooner than later if my philosophy of werid/quirky watches being winners as I also just bought the Two Tone Sea Dweller 43mm because the Sea Dweller is the most true tool watch Rolex ever produce, and when I saw it in Two Tone I immediately called my AD and landed the watch because its already an crazy off watch in the first place, but put Gold on it and its even more ridiculous. But in my opinion it is the most beautiful Rolesor the make, and they are so limited in production that I cant help but think it will be a true collectors piece.
      Also I think the negative comments you recieve are likely from people who own a Hulk and had to spend very real and serious money on other items not watch related, which I have been through myself, but you are of course allowed your opinion but just to be offered this watch post 2015 I would say you would have had to spend at least 100K in other non watch items. And thats a practice that I find awful bc if you have money and want a watch you should be able to get it, but Rolex are even better Marketers than Watch Makers. Regards and good luck in your future, it will be fun to watch you.

Some Datejusts are approaching 19-20k. Im trying to understand what Rolex watch is worth purchasing in the next coming weeks or month. Something that can become a collectors item in the years to come.

I think you need to pick a lane here. It sells at a 30% premium to the black sub but it’s completely different on the wrist. I own both and there’s no comparison to the beauty and uniqueness of the green. It’s expensive for a reason as are ALL Rolexes because they cannot be bought. It’s that simple. No ignorance or following there herd, just simple scarcity as the driving force.

    I don't know from where you get your info !? If you know Rolex you won't make this nonsense video because clearly you are novice in this hobby... Hulk is already iconic and no one can undermine it anymore, as you have said its been a hot item for way too long and it is discontinued now so if you want one you need to spend a lot of cash to get it, these watches are now mostly for collectors not youtubers who wanna follow fashion and trend... Think about Paul Newman's Daytona do you think they are no longer desired because they don't show so often on CZcams or because they are not widely available at Grey dealers...

    • @StandardTime
      @StandardTime  Před 3 lety

      The video is about why the Hulk is not in the news much. "Iconic" is a word wildly overused. The Submariner is iconic, the green hulk is certainly not. It's desirable purely for an investment standpoint. People are actively seeking out the Cermit/Starbucks over the Kermit for the aesthetics and of course newer specs. And yes, whatever exchanges hands the most at dealers is literally what the market is after.

    • @majedalessa8376
      @majedalessa8376 Před 3 lety

      @@StandardTime then we agree to disagree... It is not in the news because
      it is no longer attainable, Hulk is the only SS submariner with a colored (green) dial , this iteration was discontinued which gave the hulk its iconic and unique status. By the way the asking prices of a new hulk is higher than a Cermit if 2nd hand prices are even higher for a mint example, these prices wouldn't be what they are if there is no demand at the end as no dealer want to have slow moving unwanted inventory.

    • @StandardTime
      @StandardTime  Před 3 lety

      That’s a fair argument. I think that they’re not moving because dealers are ready to store them as investments. They’re not going down anytime soon since they’re discontinued. They’re definitely going over the Cermit, the Cermit should actually depreciate over the coming years. All of that is true. But the interest is simply no longer there in comparison to the Cermit. At least that’s what I have seen to be the case scouring the internet and first hand experience from dealers.

      @@StandardTime For casual buyers they will opt for the Cermit, it is newer, cheaper, and comes with 5yrs warranty. Hulk has always been overrated. The ID guy did a great video on it awhile ago, before it was discontinued - the color just doesn’t look good, it’s way too green, and it doesn’t look “right”. Really all the hype comes down to the fact that it’s the only color version of the stainless steel sub - if you want steel then you only can choose from black, which has been in production from the beginning and therefore there’s TONS of them out there, or the Hulk, which has only been in production for something like a decade or so, so it’s unique and rare in that sense, and that drives up the value, but it’s not because it looks good. Calling this the most iconic Rolex is insane - the black sub is more iconic, but so many of the other models are better contenders for that title anyway. How can a watch that’s only been around a decade and is now discontinued “iconic”?? That bastardizes the word.

    • @StandardTime
      @StandardTime  Před 3 lety +1

      Very insightful comment, I completely agree. Had the watch been fluorescent yellow I'm quite sure the reaction would've been the same due to lack of choice. I think the rampant misuse of "iconic" is particularly silly, hence the skit as well.

    • @mutedmutiny9542
      @mutedmutiny9542 Před 3 lety

      @@StandardTime I agree. The truly iconic watches are by and large still in production. The black sub, the Pepsi GMT, and that only went out of production because they weren’t able to do a two-tone bezel in ceramic. I’d also argue the Batman has become a modern icon and more of one than the Hulk is, the Daytona obviously, the day date, the explorer, these are all icons and are still being produced. Even outside of Rolex this is the case - look at the moon watch, still being made with hesalite and manual wind the way the original was, but then obviously there’s tons of variations on it as well. It is possible to retire an icon, so for example the Seiko SKX, but that was in production for like 30 years I believe, and I’m guessing they will bring it back at some point, but regardless that’s an icon that has stood the test of time. The hulk, I just don’t see it as in the company of these other watches. I don’t dispute that it’s popular and in demand, but if it were really such an icon they wouldn’t have discontinued it, they would have kept it going and just updated the movement the way they did with the regular black sub. The fact that they changed it to me says they weren’t happy with it and they thought it looked better just as a black dial with green bezel, same as the original Kermit was, and I agree that looks better than the green on green. It may not be as unique, but it’s a better combination and overall aesthetic.
