    I wanted a Rolex Explorer white dial desperately. Was told I had to buy some stuff at the dealer first, ( which I did). I was also told I couldn’t just order it, I had to come meet the owner of the store. He told me he’d see what he could do. Over the next year I read the unfavorable reviews about Rolex dealers. I decided to buy an Omega Seamaster professional. After the pandemic ( around a year later) I got the call from the dealer. Told him I no longer wanted the watch. He couldn’t believe it. I said sell it to someone else. I no longer want a Rolex and will not support this kind of behavior in any way. When Rolex are readily available I might consider it.

      Glad you came to your senses. I have always found it both interesting and disgusting that consumers would humiliate themselves to such a degree to buy a Rolex. I just do not get it. It's reasonable these retailers and even flippers are in private, laughing and making fun of the irrational games people are willing to play. And congrats on your Omega. There are so many wonderful options by so many manufacturers.

      I just don't get why they would be incentivized to do this though. Don't they want to be the ones to sell you the watch? Instead of you having to resort to a grey market dealer instead? Or is it because these ADs have already backdoored so many of the stock to said grey market dealers that they made their money and that it's no longer their concern at the end of the day?

      @@elrey78 I've heard and witnessed some pretty unbelievable practices and made me definitely not want to buy a Rolex to be honest. I like Rolex watches I really do, but all the bad AD underhand dealing is very unfair to the good dealers and Rolex. I think Rolex's acquisition of Bucherer might help them but I think the pricing has gone way out of control. For me a Submariner Date [2023] should be £7,500 at retail and someone who has saved up for one should be able to buy one. I think Rolex have a huge challenge on their hands and I think all manufacturers will be following a more vertical approach of B to C, the AD model I don't think is going to work for much longer if things continue. AD's have a future but they have to deal with the Rolex situation.

I said I'd get back to him and I didn't. several months later, I came back, but not to the Rolex AD, instead it was the Patek, and I got a Nautilus. Rolex always tries to say their watches are in high demand and they can't make them quick enough, (i mean only a million a year). If I'm going to beg and plea, I might as well do that for a Patek.

    • @AlmightyFSM
      @AlmightyFSM Před 6 měsíci +2

      I don't think it's that kind of production issue. As discussed in the video, Rolex have to predict demand. They likely underestimated the Pepsi demand and possibly changed their production line for other models, thereby reducing the rate of production of Pepsi. So the "production issue" is simply they cannot make them fast enough because they reduced production, possibly a while ago. This also matches with the idea that they over-produced Batmans by comparison, which is why ADs are getting more of those

The hoi polloi just make everything more difficult for long time collectors who don't care about prices and future values and this other stupid shit. I seriously wish they'd just give these people their f-ing Submariner or Explorer II so they'd shut up about it. People are grinding these poor Rolex Sales Associates into the ground for all kinds of stuff they will literally NEVER BUY. No wonder they're rude assholes; they're sick and tired of little broke twats demanding a $7,000 watch from them like it's a civil right! And I've been collecting Rolex GMT Masters since 1992. Now I want the new ref. 126718GRNR but people just will not get out of the way, demanding to be on a "list" that doesn't even exist. So I'm not even trying to buy it from an AD -- I'm waiting for one to show up on the secondary market like I always did...before the idiocy. And when I find one, I'll pay what it costs. I just want the watch. But it is beyond irritating when these pimply faced green pea, pink assed little kids and their newfound temporary crypto wealth start log jamming the watch market when they don't even want the watch and are completely indifferent to the brand, like you are. They have a 1/3 market share. I understand demand is strong and so the waiting lists are legit, but let’s not pretend that Rolex watches are rare. They are absolutely everywhere. Having a 'milestone' birthday today (the 19th) I thought I would reward myself for a job well done thus far. The lady led me to the Rolex display with the caveat that, 'these are our display models not for sale and we don't have anything in inventory' going directly to the 'year long waiting list' blah, blah, blah. I told her it was pointless to look then (but I did) and I would just have to go to a larger market if that were truly the case. She wished me luck. Talk about a put off.

      If you want a Rolex and don't mind a flight, go to Hong Kong, Rolex dealers have watches there. Also on the Asian grey market you can find good watches at retail or even below. I'm based in Istanbul and there is an influx into the grey market from Chinese luxury watch buyers who are now struggling due to the economic problems caused by the disastrous crash in the residential property market. Many are hungry for dollars and in Istanbul, physical gold of equivalent value. China has been the main cause of the scarcity as they were the biggest market for years now, but they will be the cause of further reductions as more of them start to sell. Forget the dealers in Europe and the west in general (unless you're willing to go to Asia) , and check the grey market instead (be sure anything you look at is genuine). You might also get lucky if you're ever flying through Dubai, we traveled back from Jakarta about a year ago and a colleague of mine bought, on the spot, a Rolex Kermit which was on display. Generally, be patient, you will see more Rolex pieces become available.

    It's so funny this isn't new news. They have been doing this for decades with the Daytona. A very large AD I know in a major US city explained to me back in 2014 that he had dozens of steel Daytonas in the safe and per Rolex he had to have his staff slowly call his best customers and say "they just got one in and they could have it but they had to buy it now".
    During this crazy market that started in 2017 my local dealer in a small town always has steel models in stock for those they want to sell them to

    We all know that Rolex is a master marketer and that they alone control the narrative and that gets the community talking which further helps Rolex in their strategy… we all know models will come and go but given the facts of how important the “Pepsi” is, it’s highly unlikely to ever be gone for good… it was recently discontinued then reintroduced to a standing ovation which will sooner or later happen again… Last week on holiday I visited my ad and was going to pick up a new sprite.. when I went in to pick it up I was given my choice of any gmt in any configuration I wanted and they were all in stock.. I questioned the rumor of the pepsi being discontinued and the feeling from the ad was that it’s still a bezel production issue and they still get them in but not as often as the others. Bottom line is buy what u like and enjoy the ride….

    ADs played games with me. I bought a 124270 Explorer, but it was a 5 month journey. In April of 2023, I was told that there were no more allocations for the explorer and that I would have to inquire in November for 2024 availability. I mentioned I wanted to wear one for my wedding in late September...Fast forward to late September. They magically happened to have 2 in stock not allocated to a specific buyer and was told that I could purchase it. It just so happened this was the week of my wedding. So my experience was bittersweet, staff was super nice and congenial but I have to raise an eyebrow on their business acumen.

    Do you have any insights into whether Rolex audits the inventory / sales of ADs? If so, would it be possible for the owner to hold back so much inventory? At a certain point, would that be evident to Rolex who may be looking at sales vs. cost vs. change in inventory?

  • @WestCoastAce27

    Great episode as always. I still find it hard to believe the Pepsi will ever be discontinued - so many countries have red white blue flags so it will always be popular. I got the Tudor Opaline; prefer the dial (but do wish the bezel colors were brighter).
    Another thought on the AD owner hoarding 40 Pepsis - he’s a non Bucherer store and thinks (or knows) his days are numbered. Or he is flipping them and since GER is technically on recession (sorry!) he’s holding them hoping prices go back up on the grey market after the economy recovers.

    @AlmightyFSM Před 6 měsíci +4

    If the watches you see at ADs were from stock that was manufactured a while ago, and the tooling has changed, then the Pepsi scenario could be exactly the Tiffany blue scenario. They made too many Batmans and not enough Pepsi to match demand, they (perhaps) have a lower volume supply now due to retooling so they are trickling the remaining Pepsi out based on their inventory and production rate. This would match both with observation, and the claim of "production issues"

    • @thegorn
      @thegorn Před 6 měsíci +1

      I think you are right. It's a good way to clean up the wait lists for people who are hanging on forever for a Pepsi, and move them into a Batman. It's also a way to move on the sheisters who just want to buy and flip. I think Rolex ideally want every piece hovering around the aftermarket price and not well below it, to discourage flipping, but also not go so low so that people feel burned if they do sell their Rolex. Not losing much or any on a flip is one of Rolex's pride points. Since the Pepsi is one of the few remaining models to have this problem so I think it will happen. Mind you I think they deliberately manipulate the Daytona so it does sell way more on the grey market, so ADs can use these as big carrots, and maintain Rolex prestige. Daytona is a special case.
      The AD who is stockpiling 40+ Pepsi GMT's knows what's up.

    Good discussion, but I feel like something important was left out, and that is that IF it gets discontinued, it'll be because they've changed it slightly (f.ex changed bezel paint/technology), and there is a new ref of the same model. They'll never discontinue the pepsi as a model, for obvious reasons. So I think this should've been pointed out

      I agree, but it might take a while before it’s reintroduced- could be a few years. I could be wrong, but I think there was also a time when there was only a coke and no pepsi back in the 70s or 80s, when they released the “fat lady”

    Addendum: So before my birthday dinner out tonight (now yesterday), I took my wife to the AD so she could look at the watch I had selected for her which was a 'Datejust' with diamonds around the bezel and on the dial. She was fine with it except she changed the dial from blue to mother of pearl. They said it should be in by Spring. Then the small talk ensued, she had some of her jewelry cleaned and a glass of champagne. I showed her the one I wanted (Submariner steel with date) similar to the Submariner (without date) I had back in the 80's and sold. The lady had a tray she was carrying Heathers jewelry around on with some gloves on it then lifted them up... the Submariner I wanted was on it! Three of them I had talked to before all came over and said Happy Birthday! Adding that they had a shipment arrive right after I left LOL, of course I know they had it all along but wow, I was still surprised and of course I haven't taken it off since dinner!

    I see similar trends in the market for exclusive autos, some of which start with the dealers, others with factories. It's not possible to buy a new Ferrari today without having previously purchased other Ferraris from the dealer, else buyers go to the broader secondary market and buy a car that flips. However, Ferrari sells every car it makes, so the supply remains legitimately constrained. From this discussion, there's some uncertainty if Rolex supply is legitimately constrained or the bottlenecks are created artificially to maintain high prices. Does Rolex's purchase of Bucherer address the issue to eliminate bad behavior from some of the Rolex authorized dealer, or is Rolex looking to control Bucherer to maintain the appearance of supply constraints?
