    Oddie's Historical Feature - Episode 17
This Historical Features details the the story of the Papin Sisters - their upbringing - the murders - and their trial & final years.
Christine & Léa Papin grew up in Le Mans, France. After a tragic upbringing, things appeared to be going in the right direction for them; they had a good job as head servant/cook & chambermaid in a the house of a wealthy middle class family. By all accounts, they were fed & treated well & had a comfortable heated room on the third floor of the large house of Monsieur Lancelin & his family.
Then one day, the girls snapped...leaving a horrific trail in their wake.
No one could quite believe that these two kind & demure young women, could be capable of such shocking & grisly murders.
Many thanks to one of my sweet viewer's 'Melissa Sutton' for suggesting I research this case.

Not only was the past not better than it is today, newspapers - believe it or not - are less sensational now than they were pre-WWII. Can you imagine them publishing photos today of murdered corpses as they did here and in many other cases? "The past was way classier" my eye. People who say that are either brainwashed by Hollywood films or are just editing out all the bad stuff.

I think it's generally a learned familial trait that gets passed on no matter how hard you try to disregard your own upbringing. Someone was bad to their mother, too... and someone was bad to that person.... and so on and so on. You pass down what you learn. #1 reason i DIDN'T have kids. I LOVED my unborn children, & they didn't deserve to go through the horror & EXTREME beatings that i grew up with, and my folks before me(although in our day, having your hide skinned off by your parents was acceptable- but mine went beyond that) & my family would have treated my children badly, and that just MAY have made me murderous. I LOVED my family. Even if I didn't have one.
Folks, when you hit that point of "it's gotta stop.." remove YOURSELF, not the child. A child HAS nowhere else to go. Lol, it WAS too funny seeing doctors/'therapists' suggest that it might just partially be my mom's fault- she blew a gasket in their office at the mere suggestion.- & those 2 docs looked at me in wide-eyed shock & helpless horror FOR me, jaws hanging OPEN. I'll never forget the look on their faces... I forgave myself that day. (My "problem" (their problem) was that I had withdrawn from all social pretenses & avoided any contact with any human. They're just too They couldn't help me if she wasn't going to let them. I just had to find a way out on my own(she was quite the queen of motives, lies, denial & "outward appearances." Even teachers suggested to me that "You don't have to live like this." But yes- when you're a teen in a small town, you're considered nothing but drama and no substance..there WAS NO HELP but to hit the old railroad tracks out of town & not look back at 14 yrs old. I got really lucky. Got out of that town and all of the sudden found out that there were people who WOULD help!) Don't give up. Don't become what you hate. It's too easy to fall prey to your own human nature. We must evolve. It's harder.

Some ppl can eat peanuts, some people nearly die from them. Same thing, different reaction.
Clearly, the long term abuse, neglect and cruelty these girls endured turned them around so far.. it appears the constant put downs, yelling and condescending treatment on a day to day basis drove them way over the line, as it would!
Long term abuse since childhood can do horrible things to people, re-wire their brains, lose their sanity.. These girls tried to make it, they tried. They worked, they did the right thing.. seemingly doing well.. only for their place of comfort turned into a living hell.

And we aren't comparing rapists and serial killers to these girls. They snapped. They didn't go around killing and raping people. They didn't just have a 'bad childhood', they had a bad life. Clearly you are so far removed from any understanding or perception of what this is like or the psychological and behavioural effects long term abuse has.
While I haven't suffered what these girls went through, I know first hand the long term affects of mental and physical abuse.
And Yes, these deaths are still horrendous and tragic, not taking that away, nor did they deserve to be murdered like that.. But we must understand WHY.

This horrendous process continues and the unfortunate to be born unwanted suffers a difficult life and in turn directs that into society. That was 44 years ago and I can still see myself at eye level with the door knob getting yelled at for something I was told to do. My biological father was very emotionally abusive saying I was a lying piece of shit , a piece of crap and good for nothing. My step-father would constantly try to start physical fights with me when I was in my early to mid teens. Many years later I was 36 and he was 65+ when he tried it again. Difference was that this time I stood up to him. He literally ran away like a little girl when approached by me.

I now have bipolar disorder, have had a few suicide attempts and trust absolutely no one %100, not even my wife. Also my temper is extreme when not on meds. Because of the possibility of an explosive temper I no longer own guns . That was something I found necessary . I can function but am better left alone therefore I drive an 18 wheeler cross country.

But you tried and made a decent effort to pronounce the words correctly and in doing that showed respect for other languages. I'm Belgian and French is only my second language, but I, and I'm sure the French speaking communities, appreciate this effort.
This is the first of your videos I watched, but there will be more. Great story, well narrated, fitting pictures to create a weird and spooky atmosphere. I love it!

Actually people who speak French as their native tongue, or for whom the language is part of their country's heritage, like yourself - tend to be be forgiving of my attempts, but it's very usually English speaking people who speak French fluently, who are the most critical. So I thank you for your good grace Sir!

I can tell you right now that when you are blamed by people you will do any thing to gain that feeling of control again. I'm not a psychologist but I honestly believe that they both just wanted control again and took out the anger in the form of murder on the people who were at their breaking point the ones considered the ones who dictate their life to them. I may be way, way off but I can imagine that is at least some what close to their thoughts.

God bless you, Monica...I can tell you don't let your disability get the best of you...you go, girl!!! I had a best friend in Jr high school who was blind and she didn't stop for anything...unless you knew her personally, one would have never known she was blind...Lee did everything and didn't let her disability slow her down for one minute...I also used to babysit for a neighbor who was going blind since she was a teen (got a very bad virus that settled in her eyes) and she slowly went blind (could see only faint shadows)...never slowed Ellie down either...drove until she absolutely had to give it up, worked at a national laboratory and had, like, size 124 font on her computer so she could work (our employer went out of their way for people w/disabilities) and always had her beloved dog at her side...her dogs throughout her life allowed her to do whatever Ellie wanted to do...sadly, Ellie passed away last year in her early '80s and her beloved dog was right there w/all of us, celebrating her life...so, Monica, YOU GO, GIRL, and HAVE A WONDERFUL FULFILLING LIFE!!!🎇💝🎆

But the sisters were also victims of another sort - that doesn’t justify what they did, but it also has to make one think about how someone ultimately chooses to commit acts like that. Sad story.

First one I've seen from you. I like how you include the texted version so I can actually watch these without the voice if I want to (like in a public place without disturbing others), but also read them out loud - with your clear voice - which enables me to hear the story without looking at the screen (like when I do my makeup or clean the house). And the pictures and sound effects and not-too-loud music that fits the atmosphere... Very nice work (Y)

This is a sad story. I spent 20 years being caretaker and ran the house of a very wealthy single woman. For reasons too complicated to explain , she physically assaulted me in the kitchen. Scratched and bruised my arm and hit me in the face hard enough to make my nose bleed. This was in front of of 3 witnesses. Needles to say I walked out never to return. No matter how sweet they may seem at first, telling you how much you are needed, but you soon become part of the family like an old stick of furniture .

How utterly tragic. You did a wonderful job with this story, both giving a factual account of what happened and in evoking sympathy for the horrible damage that abuse left behind in those sisters even years after the fact. Another great video!

There is something about the tone of your voice that reminds me of the wonderful Alan Rickman (may he R.I.P)! Very interesting channel, brilliant attention to detail and could listen to this narration all day.

fabulous comments from my viewers..but from time to time, some catch my
      eye (& heart)
A lot have mentioned I sound like Alan Rickman - a great actor he was! I guess there are some similarities.

This was very well done for my tastes. Bravo!
Usually, when I click a link and discover that Im about to hear a narrated story I quickly lose interest and find something else. Not this time though.
Your voice is pleasing, you speak plainly and clearly, and this is the most important thing : YOU PUT THE WORDS ON THE SCREEN! That's magic for me because I often can't hear or understand what is being said and so I often tune out.
Including pictures related to the events and your background and other related imagery are just icing on the cake. Well done sir. Call me a subscriber!

What is most relevant is that the luminaries - Sartre, et al - defended the women on the basis of wealth/power disparity. If one were to trace the sisters' mother and father's background, I believe one would find these disparities in the extreme, until the cauldron boils over. Today many cauldrons are boiling over and for the same reasons.
Mr Narrator, you have an intelligent, respectful and pleasing voice and wonderful connection to your viewers. Because of this, I'm inspired to watch more, despite creepiness!

These sisters are the perfect example of what happens when people are treated like animals and beat and abused from infancy and every time they begin to find a small light the darkness of abuse seeped back in once again. When the madame became abusive towards the girls, just as their father, grandfather and mother had been all of their lives, they snapped. They were obviously insane. While what they did was horrifying and unconscionable, it is a very real example of why we need to help children who are in bad homes who are beaten, starved, used and neglected. This could have been avoided had anyone throughout their formative years stepped in to help these girls and shown them that life was not all simply abuse and sadness. I feel badly for the family killed but also find that even though I cannot imagine the horror of what those two sisters did to that family, I still find myself feeling deep sadness for them as well. They knew only suffering and that led to a decision they could never take back. Really sad the whole thing.

Them cleaning up afterwards was not evidence of sanity or being calculated.
They were maids - they cleaned regularly. In times of shock or trauma, a boring job which you can do without thinking is often calming. I am not surprised that this is what they did first.
