WARNING: This video has graphic content that may be disturbing to some viewers.
Herman Webster Mudgett, better known as H.H. Holmes, (May 16, 1861 to May 7, 1896) was a con artist and bigamist who was one of America's first serial killers. Sometimes referred to as the "Beast of Chicago," Holmes is believed to have killed somewhere between 20 and 200 people. He killed many of his victims in a specially constructed home, which was later nicknamed the "Murder Castle." Apprehended in 1894, he was hanged for his crimes two years later.

The mom to one of my grade school friends decided to trace her family tree. She discovered that about three or four generations back on her mother's side, her great-great grandparents had changed their last name to Mudge after it had been Mudgett. Then she discovered that her great-great uncle... is H.H. Holmes. Said my friend's mom, "I know my mother's family is weird, but I didn't think they were *that* weird!"
THAT’S FUCKING WILD
It's just so crazy to me, how a mother can give her kids to someone she barely knew!! Great job on the video 👍
I wonder if he forced her? Threatened her...?
@@afroatheist-isnowafroantit6154 why didn't I think of that? Guaranteed, that's what happened.....
@@milotheleopardgeckofriends796 I think so, too. We just can't imagine a Mom doing that.....but, he must've, being that he was so cruel.
She did know him tho, her husband and Holmes ran many schemes together. Plus she thought she was about to get paid off from her husband's life insurance that Holmes had. My guess is she thought this would ensure he would need to meet up with her again to at least get the kids back. Also, if I remember right they were wanted, her having no kids and him having a few to travel with created a disguise for them both
@@afroatheist-isnowafroantit6154 it's sweet u have such kind regards for mom's. Unfortunately I have heard of or known too many "moms", those who have the title but don't deserve it.
Dear Oddie,
I absolutely adore how you bring the photographs to life. Thank you!
Me too! It's so cool and adds to the be ambience.
Ikr! Like how does he even do it?!
I find them so eerie (which is not a bad thing).
Read "Devil In The White City". It tells the history of the Chicago World's Fair and how Holmes used it as his hunting grounds.
I read it a few months ago and couldn't put it down.
yes that was a great book
Thanks
The hunting grounds are now tragically in our back yards.
Good book, all of his books are good. I've read a few fo them.
It's really funny and ironic that Holmes wanted his remains to be cast in cement and buried deep to "deter from grave robbers" only to be dug up by his descendant hundred ++ years later. Poetic justice.
So true, finishes the story off nicely doesnt it ?
@@ellygreaves9793 Indeed.
Personally, I wish they would have not honored his wishes and donated his body to a medical school.
A man of pure nightmares that's inspired so many things - movies, books, documentaries, and most likely other killers. I saw this on Patreon it was a great video.

Ah, H.H. Holmes. One of the most macabre and disturbing serial killers in American history. Rather fascinating to hear his story and especially in the way you tell it.
All the best always, Oddie!
Wow, it's amazing how one incident can lead to something far greater. Little did the bullies know that the day they made Holmes face that skeleton, that that was the turning point that set him on his path to becoming one of the most infamous serial killers in history...
The butterfly effect is truly frightening
MysticWolf it does make me think that surely he’d have found his love for death eventually though, it was hardly avoidable
Katie Rasburn
Agree. Bullied or not he would still go on to commit barbaric crimes.
Gail Miller Gail Miller I suppose we’ll never know. I remember watching a documentary on a man that was researching a so called murder gene that so many caught killers had. He later found out he also had the gene, he’d just never acted on or even thought of such things
Katie Rasburn
Very interesting, thanks for sharing.
Maybe, but being bullied did not make him a scammer. He was just an awful person all around.
Well, now we know where American Horror Story: Hotel writers got that hotel's specifics. I left a note to watch your presentation on Amazon. Hope the review goes through.
Huge missed opportunity. They should have spent more time on the Hotel and less on vampires and a serial killer mystery where the killer was obvious half way through episode 1.
I briefly searched for any type of reference by the creators and found none. It feels like plagiarism. Not even 'inspired by real events'. It's about AHS's claim of unique original story lines. Given such uniquely grotesque details in every aspect something should have been acknowledged. I also Tweeted it. Tbh, I would encourage everyone who loves this channel to share and drive traffic here.
@@31webseries Lady Gaga did great, but that season would have been so much better focusing on the hotel aspect.

I'd go to one called the Creamatorium--always thought that would be a good name for an ice cream place. They could specialize in their hot fudge sundaes!
Nice catch!
Me too! He could put a macabre spin on the interior design and the menu and he'd make... a killing. 😏
Underrated thread.
Do you know when I first heard this story years ago, I'm a native Chicagoan, I looked up the address and where the house was formally located it's a post office now. I've often wondered should anything have even built there, there HAS to be some bad juju left behind
Tbh a post office doesn't have to be in a former murder hotel to have bad juju, that's just overkill.
That post office is on the haunted Chicago tour. There's weird stuff that supposedly happens there.
Watch the My Haunted House episode called Torture Hotel on the TRVL channel. It's about a lady postal worker who found an old bottle like thing (forgot real name) in the crawlspace took it home and began seeing visions of Holmes. Her land lord told her about the torture hotel that once stood where the post office is now.
You know it.

I have to deal with Patron today. They want me to re-put in my last 2 payments amounts and re-add my bank details,...why, ....they should already have it, I've been on Patron for some time now. I've written them 2 or 3 emails stateing I want to keep giving the same 'upped' amount and want to give them my new password, but I want to be sure they know I want nothing to do with Discord, after downloading that the 1st time I can't find it in my phone to take off!! So I HAD to down load the Discord gamer app, then shortly after that I found myself SIGNED OUT of Goggle...I didn't do that!! SO who did?
My phone isn't activated right now so I can't use it as a 'phone', duh, thanks to paying phoney late charge fees the nasty apt manger's tactics, plus she keeps raising my rent without me having gotten pay raises. She'll be delt with in the not too distant future, she doesn't know I've gone to outsiders for help.😉
I AM NOT LEAVING PAYTRON, I'll try and get this mess sorted out. But if I RE-GIVE my bank details (they already have them) HOW do I know I'm not giving a HACKER my bank details, maybe the same hacker that sgined me out of Goggle ?!! ( I finely got a password change & straightened out there)
What I'd like to do is have another small bank account to use for Paytron stuff but my apt manager would UP my rent if she knew I had a savings account!! , she already did that, and I wasn't getting any MORE $, she doesn't want you to have anything to fall back on. Hud makes folks do a reassessment each yr, and they have their nose in any bank acc. info, my manager made me go through 3 one after the another this past year!!! I had to re-pay the bank for the bank statements, I WON'T do that again. It's really hard not having a car. ANYWAY I'm only doing one reassessment from now on, and I'm not leaving her office till I get copies made of my bank statements !!! Live & learn ! In time she'll be answering for all this. I can't move untill she's delt with, her phoney late charge fee stuff means now wherever I would move to I'd HAVE to have the FULL deposit/rent up front, then also have to pay to move.
Sorry for 'rambling!! But all this might help some other folks who are trying to live in a Hud run apartment. They (apt. managers) luv to play their games.....I WILL write a book about it one day.😂😁
Paytron thing...to be continued...
@@ObsoleteOddity GOOD 4 YOU!!

Thanks for a eerie video! I grew up in the suburbs right outside of Chicago, and we always heard creepy stories about Dr. Holmes, but never knew how much was true, I don't think we ever thought that the more gruesome things were true, and all the while, it was much worse. Thanks Oddie 😘
Some Network filmed his descendants quest for answers. They brought up a young cousin who had died when Holmes was younger too. As well as his numerous schemes and lawsuits. He seemingly had no moral code
Gotta look for that!
@@drakawinkle584 pretty sure i watched through Amazon prime video
Draka Winkle it is called American Ripper. It’s good for the historical pieces, but it’s best to disregard the entire theory that HHH was Jack the Ripper. The guy makes it sound convincing (he has a really interesting TED talk) but the facts really don’t line up as well as they like to portray in the show. Not dragging it, because I love the show, but just letting you know. :)
Seen several video's and shows about H.H. Holmes, including his great grandson's appearance on one of those ghost hunting shows, poor guy (while doing genealogical research) was horrified when he found out who his ancestor was! Of all the shows I've seen, this one is the best! You included more recent developments I'd not heard before (such as the condition of his corpse when they disinterred him). And at the end the only "excuse" he could come up with was "the devil made me do it".....so lame! Thank you Oddie for another great Sunday!
Love how you do these videos, the old pictures the movement of the people, the little bugs and spiders, mouse and cat and dogs crossing the street, the leaves blowing in the wind, snow and rain falling, the shadows moving light bulbs glowing, blood dripping on the walls, the Old photos and their eyes and mouth moving, absolutely love all the effects and of course the stories, you bring everything alive and into the time period. The Very Best.❤️❤️❤️

This was an interesting but horrifying story. Since he was an intelligent man, it makes me think of the saying that there is a fine line between brilliance and madness. Thanks for another informative story.
Such evil deeds . At my age I'm not usually surprised by many acts of such horror , but this true story is horrendous .
This is the only channel where it doesn't matter how well I know a case, I'll still watch because the video will be superbly done. Thanks Oddy for always bringing the top notch productions.

This is the most thorough presentation I’ve seen on HHH. Well done Oddie!
Great job! I have seen a few documentaries on Holmes but they only covered the Pitezel children in terms of minors being killed. They were not only focussed on Holmes either. The "expert interviews" on some of those take too much time away from the story. There were several details I have not heard about. Every one of them said it had burned down, so that was interesting to hear it wasn't. I've always loved this kind of history. My husband calls it useless but I call it fascinating. Maybe a little bit of both. 😊 It may be a bit seem creepy to say I enjoyed it but I've never cared about appearances. Thanks again for sharing!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback Ruth, much appreciated!

What a horrible man he was. Glad he was finally caught and got his upcoming. Very gruesome man. Another great story Oddie, thank you.
This presentation is most excellently done! I became aware of H.H. Holmes when I saw the Netflix move: "America's First Serial Killer" a few years ago. I've been fascinated with this story ever since. The video here provides many more details about his life that I was unaware of; so thank you for that as well. Clearly this was a very sick and disturbed man, but I cannot ignore the fact that it takes a brilliant mind to design and build this "Death Hotel" the way he did. It was so intricately designed, this had nothing to do with his medical training or background. Clearly he used his genius for evil instead of good.
Thank you so much for reaching out with your kind feedback 😊
@@ObsoleteOddity I'm new to your channel. Your video presentations are excellent. I've enjoyed the Papin sisters, Lizzie Borden, & Borley Rectory thus far. Keep up the good work! Cheers from San Diego.👌

I really enjoyed this latest video. As usual, you've presented details I've never heard until now. The fact that his body has been positively identified is especially new to me. I can't help thinking that he could have become a criminal mastermind ala Professor Moriarty if he hadn't been so obsessed with death.
This one gave me the shivers..the blinking from the photos is a bit startling.. well done!!
and you have to wonder if the post office on that site is haunted..
I had not heard of this case before !! Bless those who suffered at his hands. I thank you for the paintings you chose in your videos. It must take a lot of time. When I look at classic oils I get swept down a vortex and time stands still. Then I realize I should be sweeping up dog hair ☺️

I wonder why there's never been a movie made about the murders of H.H. Holmes, I would think it would make for an incredible horror film. A fascinating story about one of America's first known serial killers. Thank you for the wonderful video!
I can hazard a guess. Mostly because it would be deemed "mysoginist", "anti-feminist" and "glorifying violence against women". It would have to have a clear moral message at the end that "crime doesn't pay" or something. Frankly. that's for the best. I have seen what modern cinema did to Agatha Christie's "Murder on the Orient Express" (director: Kenneth Branagh aka Gilderoy Lockhart from Harry Potter films) to make it as progressive in its philosophies as possible, rewriting history and removing any semblance of common sense just so everyone feels included. It was a detective story, yes, but set in historical setting that you cannot change willy-nilly. Yet they did. I tried to turn my brain off and enjoy the show, but couldn't. The thought that cinemas are now closed due to COVID-19 and cannot spew such garbage anymore makes me happy. Rant over.
HH Holmes has always fascinated me. This was the best done video I've seen on him; filled with information I'd never heard before. I was shocked to see he had worked at Norristown State Hospital. I was born and raised not far from Norristown, PA and have actually been on the grounds a few times as I worked in the mental health field. I even interviewed for a job there, but it was not exactly a place I wanted to work. It is a huge complex and "creepy" doesn't even begin to describe the place. It is notorious and everyone from that area has a spooky story about "Norristown", as it's simply known. Interestingly, another notorious facility is not far, Pennhurst. If you're not familiar, there are many documentaries on youtube. It was a facility for intellectually and developmentally disabled and the mentally ill. I had a few patients who had been there their entire lives whom I cared for in a group home following the closing of Pennhurst. Anyway, thank you once again for a wonderful video!!!

History Channel (I believe it was) aired a program whereby Holmes' great grandson (a prosecuting attorney) believed Holmes to be the infamous Jack the Ripper. He fully expected Holmes' remains would not be found interred - however, as you've described, the remains were those of H.H. Holmes. Thanks for bringing this story forward.
Jeff Mudgett is full of shit. That show was to promote his book of the fictional account of Holmes.
That was well-done, Oddie!!! I've heard alot of versions of this story but you really told the whole story. I was born in Chicago but raised in the burbs and my elders wouldn't talk about it but they'd say as a vague warning " HHHolmes is gonna get you" if you didn't behave or wanted to wander off.

You’ve really outdone yourself with this one.
The images perfectly matched the horrifying and eerie pictures going through my mind as I read “Devil in the White City”.
In many ways, your excellent historical presentations remind me of the books of Erik Larson - but with haunting images that bring these stories to eerie life.
Both you and Larson take what could be dry history and turn it into what could be a novel or movie.

I clicked on this one because I had heard the name several times, and was curious. I didn't know he was so evil, absolutely no conscience whatsoever. I read about a theory that he was Jack the Ripper. Somehow, I don't think so. Jack the Ripper was more methodical, he used the same m.o. to kill his victims. H. H. Holmes used many different methods, so it doesn't add up to him being Jack the Ripper.
Great video. I finally know a bit about this infamous H. H. Holmes.
I've been waiting for this one! I say he is high one the list f the most disturbed minds that ever lived. Where was his humanity? Not an ounce of conscience. Your voice...this story...chills! This was superb, Oddie! You just get better and better!

Great video Oddie. Thanks again. Holmes created a real house of horrors! I watched a different video on HHHolmes before but the part about his body being exhumed. Interesting 🤔 but how would any mother leaver her 3 children with him? Perhaps she was left without the funds to care for them. What creep Holmes was.
How could he claim the money from 'accident victims' (stolen cadavers) unless he had an insurance policy?
Didn't Mrs Pietzel realise that something had gone wrong when her husband was burnt to death?
Then she handed over custody of her children.
Perhaps she could not afford to feed them but.
I can only face half of this tonight, I'll try and fathom it tomorrow 🤔

I currently live in Chicago. This man is a legend here. I’m commenting before I watched this so I’m not sure if this information is in there or not but the old basement of the “hotel” is currently the basement of a post office. I find that kind of creepy but I live way on the other side of the city (in the suburbs) so I’m not really sure exactly where it is but i saw it mentioned on the local news once. Really weird.
The hotel was mostly located next to the post office. A very small portion of the former location of the hotel overlaps with the post office.

One of my "favorite murderers", presented by my dear Oddie. Loved this show. Very well done. Thank you so much.
Read “Devil in the White City”
“The book is set in Chicago in 1893, interweaving the true tales of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect behind the 1893 World's Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, a pharmacist and serial killer who lured his victims to their deaths in his elaborately constructed "Murder Castle". The Devil in the White City is divided into four parts, the first three happening in Chicago between 1890-1893. Part four of the book takes place in Philadelphia circa 1895. The story of Daniel Burnham, his building of the fair and the struggles he overcomes forms one plot line. The other, a vivid and very different plot line, is that of H.H. Holmes, a mentally unstable pharmacist/doctor who forms a plan to use an abandoned lot across the street from his pharmacy to lure and kill multiple victims.”
Punch I agree!!! Amazing book!!! Not only for HH Holmes, but it’s stories on the World’s Fair!! The planning that would go into the fair, it was jus as fascinating!!! I had heard it was going to be a movie with Leonardo DeCaprio, but then heard nothing more.....would have made a great movie!!!

I know! I was just as fascinated about the building of the Worlds Fair as I was about H.H. Holmes. I couldn’t put the damn thing down!
Yes, DiCaprio bought the book rights in 2010. He needs to hurry up and make the movie.
Punch I concur!!! I think he’s having issue trying to figure out how to seamlessly carry all the stories in a film.....I think he needs to make it a mini series and put it on tv! Or Netflix/HBO/Showtime and he can still get awards for it. A mini series would be awesome!!!!! He could take his time and tell the whole story!!!! LOL too bad no one would ask us what to do, *sigh* they will just butcher it. How sad!!!!
Jill Anderson
A mini-series is a great idea. I agree that would be the only way to do justice to the material. There’s so much fascinating detail in both plot lines that it would suffer as a movie.
Maybe we should start our own production company.? 🤔
Punch maybe we should!!! I’d be a great assistant 😉!! I can’t believe how many people allowed themselves to be killed by him!! He must have been one heck of a sweet talker!!!! He did admit to a whole bunch of murders-it could be a whole series!!!! Yeesh, never thought of that before.....I know the site is now a post office....but to show how he built the hotel, how he scammed, killed people he knew, plus guests of the hotel.....and the Worlds Fair in the background......it would be an amazing show!!!
I can't tell you how many times I've heard it, but I love hearing this eerie tale. Thanks, Oddie.
One of Oddie's BEST VIDEOS yet! Loved it. Amazingly detailed and graphic. Just the stuff for ObsoleteOddity fare.....

Fur sure. I read the book about 5 years ago.

Thank you so much, Oddie! Definitely the highlight of my day!
Extremely well done, Oddie! My grandparents are buried in the same cemetery as this monster and the grave reopening caused quite a stir locally. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for the very kind feedback, much appreciated :)
02:09 she kinda looked like Kate Moss, a relative of her??

Interesting.
I see it too.
Hey Oddie how the heck are you doing today
Yeeeees. I love the new intro. I been waiting on you to do a video on this guy. I'm from Chicago and he's the beginning of a long line of serial killers that have graced the windy city.
Pretty horrific for sure, his fascination for death started early kinda ingrained in his mind, its very creepy how he constructed that hotel with hallways rooms to nowhere go in and not come out alive, then gassed or left to starve those were the more cruel slower methods for the death of his victims, then sending down a chute to the dooms day basement, and so many he killed i imagine many more then were found remains of, what seemed weird is he strangled to death on the hanging rope instead of the neck breaking, seems he got his just deserts for what he did, it is hard to believe anyone committing such terrible crimes, but i guess his obsession for death gave him no empathy for human life or anything else. it was a good story very detailed i think thats why i like your channel best, the great details, thanks for another good story,
I’m happy to hear that, thanks Cherri !
Great video Oddie. Always look forward to your uploads.
As much as I had considered myself well versed on H.H. Holmes, I had never heard of the exhumation by his great-grandson. Many thanks for adding a new layer to what I know of this vile killer.
Thanks for the very kind feedback my friend, much appreciated :)
@@ObsoleteOddity well earned, good sir. Most certainly well earned.
What a bizarre account, very strange character, no doubt the devil himself has Holmes employed in diabolical activities in hell. Amazing he wasnt caught earlier, made the Ripper look like a choir boy ! What an extraordinary power he exerted over people, especially women who seemed to just sacrifice themselves and their children to him !
He was pure evil.
I love the attention to detail, animated old photos and real news sheet copy that goes into each of these productions, and your unique, compassionate response to the story in the "post script" section, that reminds us that mercifully and by the grace of God, such extreme narcisists are rare so the stories still shock us, but make us grateful to the people who do show love and kindness.
Keep 'em coming Mr O. We love ya !
Thanks very much for your kind feedback and wonderful insights Andy 😊 much appreciated!
@@ObsoleteOddity As I may have mentioned looks like youtube stopped my notifications for a while, so what a joy to rediscover an old channel in these days of lockdown. I am sure wierd stuff is going on right now that in a few years time will be on channels like this.
Although the content is creepy, there is such a lot of love and humanity on this channel that it always makes me thankful, like meeting a friendly but eccentric relative.
@@andyfield7397 Thanks for that Andy :)
Ah yes, I remember this one from the original Patreon posting but was well worth a second viewing. This guy was a real "piece of work"! A monster devoid of compassion and absolutely no mercy at all. This brings a thought to mind, who has the greater fault. The monster or the creator of this monster? I think while the abuse accounted to his childhood may have been the catalyst that started him down this path, that the elements had to be present, to begin with. This guy wanted an easy way to get the wealth he wanted and didn't care how he got it. True, he worked for those skills he used to accomplish it, but he chose to abuse those skills in a macabre way to get that wealth. Gives definite clarification to the saying, Money is the root of all evil. It's not the money that's evil, but what one is willing to do to get the money. And obviously, he was devoid of any restrictions in his methods. However, to say he had an "insect mind" I think would be an insult to the insect. LOL! Alien!? No doubt, to the sane mind, but shows up repeatedly in history. So sad that so many fell victim to his schemes before he was caught. A good posting then and still shines now, Oddie. Was glad to see it again!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback Terry, much appreciated!
