Southern Europeans, many of whom are visibly part-Moorish, initiated the transatlantic slave trade. As a free slaveowner of mixed blood, Delphine had a lot in common with these Mediterraneans, and was clearly black in name only. Her treatment of her slaves was very similar to the manner in which slaves were originally transported to America. Especially with the shackles and iron collars. She was always mindful of the purpose for which blacks were brought to America, and when she felt that blacks were straying too far from this purpose, she deemed it her duty to reign them back in again. The moral of the story is that it is necessary to bend Meghan Markle over, and rip her back to front with a butcher knife.

I was disappointed to hear that the tortured slaves were taken to jail and not to a hospital. And I was peeved that they were on display for 4000 disgusting people to gawk at. In my opinion, they were still being tortured by the creeps who made a sideshow out of them. However, I still enjoyed your video. Thank you very much.

Many happenings in the past were cruel and distasteful. You cannot use modern attitudes to judge or change the past. The tortured slaves could have been medically treated. Putting them on display was extremely cruel. But I wonder if that was done to turn community rage towards the Madame. Apparently that worked - as the mob destroyed her home and she fled, living in exile. There is so much evil that has befallen peoples of the world for centuries. If history offends you please don’t expose yourself to it. This was an interesting, amazingly well done historical presentation of an influential family. As grim as it may be.

For seven years I lived down the street at 804 Royal. I would pass by the house several times a day...but during those 7 years, it was never opened to the public. Nicolas Cage owned at some point. I became more interested because it wasn't open...and then, American Horror Story: Coven, filmed outside of the home, and Delphine LaLaurie was a character on the show. Kathy Bates played Delphine, and she's an amazing actress. AHS took an even darker turn with LaLaurie. This is about the time I would search for more information about Delphine. Your story is the most in depth I've encountered.
This is obvious speculation, but I believe Delphine was cruel, and had resentment towards all the women of color, and her siblings of color that were inheriting her father's money. Fascinating, gut wrenching story. I wish we knew more.

Meghan resembles Delphine in personality, physical appearance, and social standing. Both women were good at hiding this, but bad press about both of them eventually leaked out. In Delphine's case it was her psycho brutality; for Meghan it's her prostitution.

I just heard of Madame Marie Delphine LaLaurie from having seen the entire Coven season of the series American Horror Story for the first time. I read that she was based on a real person, but I had no idea just how much of the story was actually true! Right down to the daughters, her marriages, and the torture of people of colour that she owned as slaves. Granted, the true story takes a much different turn than what they did for the series, with her escaping to France rather than what was done in the show, but wow!
Thank you, Oddie, for being such a fountain of macabre historical knowledge. :)
Have you done or thought of doing an historical feature on the Titanic? I know the subject has been covered many times over the decades, but I'm sure there are many unusual stories related to the Titanic that never make it into the many documentaries and features that have been done about it in the past. Not to mention that they don't have that classic Oddie Beau flair.

@@ObsoleteOddity it would seem that no one else can imagine a good night sleep there either. Apparently there were slaves quartered under the sidewalk, all of whom died from lack of oxygen, it really was awful, even if you discard the worst of the tales. On my last visit to NOLA, we stayed in a place that had been a bordello, and that was an uneasy night I can tell you.. the energies are palpable to even the least sensitive visitors. A lot of life, death, and drama was packed into a very small area over a lot of years.
Richard and I SO look forward to travelling again, and visiting that lovely French chateau with you both…it would be nice to get time to really talk about these things without the constraints of time. I do hope there are no poor tortured souls left remaining in that house, perhaps it is negative entities taking advantage of that distressed energy. Or perhaps there are some still remaining who are bent on revenge.
Many years ago my sister rented a very old building for her business, it turned out that in its history it had been a brothel - that place was incredibly haunted.
Absolutely looking forward to catching up again, yes my other friends who want to also join us there, were so disappointed about this worldwide situation, but I am confident like you are that it will eventually be over.
I am so angry that the stalker was trying to psychically attack you. I’m so glad that you became aware of that situation, and have rectified it. I’ve had the same thing happen, and sometimes it takes awhile to tune in to exactly who is doing it.

Very interesting! I'm glad to know some of the more lurid tales are untrue, as if the truth wasn't bad enough. It's honestly why I waited to watch this until I was in a mental space for it! One thing that is curious to me is that all the blame for this lays on her head and almost nothing on her husband. Her husband, the doctor, who would know intimately how to hurt people. The psychology of these two together reminds me of those parents who abuse one child, often to death, while sparing their other children for some unknown reason. I'm not saying Delphine isn't responsible, but we almost never hear anyone equally accusing her husband.

Thank you so much for laughs with the pronunciation problem, and especially the squirrel at the end. I really feel that laughter is the best medicine. This story and the illustrations were done so well. Honestly, being able to pronounce the names of all the people in this story had to be difficult, so give yourself a pat on the back for that. Slavery was so wrong from the start. My heart goes out to all of them, they were treated and mistreated so badly. What a horrible person (dam, can’t remember her name), she became in life. Anyways, thanks for the story and as always, keep bringing them to us.

Sadly slavery is STILL a thing.....there are so called "house slaves" in India and in certain arab countries. Most of those slaves are asians and people of African decent. They are horribly mistreated and even out right killed. It's sad that almost nobody talks about this afwul human rights crime.

I always enjoy your videos, and especially your commentary afterwards. This video was so interesting to me, as I have passed this LaLaurie Mansion on many occasions. The first time I came upon this place, I was certain it had an evil energy. I was walking by one night, and had a horrific experience. The next day, in daylight I went back to this place, and learned of its infamous reputation. I am often suspect of places that are toured for profit and touted as ‘haunted houses’ , but there is NO doubt in my mind that this place is a legitimately haunted. Years after my experience at 1140 Royal Street, my friend told me she and her husband stayed in a haunted property in New Orleans. I guessed the address, and she was stunned. 😂 she said she did not sleep, and reported hearing terrible sounds. I think she is brave for even attempting it. No way would I mess with that! Thank you again for this video. Your research and presentation is always so well done!
Your bloopers cracked me up too! ‘Havana..Havana.. Havana… lol! Now I have semantic satiation for that word too! 😂 Cheers!

Strange that all of the subsequent owners of the LaLaurie Mansion have suffered one sort of tragedy or another in their lives. Although Madame may have whipped her slaves if they did something unacceptable, I suspect it was her husband who was responsible for the actual torture of them. How would she have been physically able to tie or chain them up to the attic rafters?

I love those animations you do for a lot of the portraits and illustrations. It makes the people and times more personable. From what I've seen here, I suspect that her third husband got the torture started, then she joined in or at least allowed it. Considering her social standing, I think she could have stopped the abuse if she wanted to do so.
