In 1952, Sir Jack Drummond, a pioneering food scientist, his wife and 10 year old daughter were shot dead while on holiday in France. A local farmer was convicted of the killings. But was he really guilty? I'm not so sure....
Can my Oddites solve this tragic case?

What stands out to me the most about this case and makes me not think this involved espionage is the fact that the son implicated that his father had done it…..why on earth would you do that unless either the father WAS guilty or the son himself had committed the murder and used his father as not only a scapegoat but saw an opportunity to get rid of his father to gain an inheritance or something else. Ultimately the initial accusation and the family’s later reluctance to cooperate with the investigation implicates that someone(s) in that family knew what happened

I have briefly heard about this case before but you did a much greater job in covering this case. So many things were done wrong by the police and even that evidence was lost is so tragic. Great work Oddie👏👏😃😃

I think the old adage “the most likely solution is the simplest one” applies here. The vast majority of these types of crimes have always been sexually motivated and committed by narcissistic psychopaths. It was a small town. Gustave had grown up there and had he been a violent psychopath he probably had a history of scaring the crap out of neighbors. The family was also probably related by blood or marriage to others in the same village including a member or two in law enforcement. One of the most common and un endearing traits of narcissists and psychopaths is blatantly lying at the drop of a hat even when the truth would better serve them. He probably killed the parents and then sexually assaulted the child in some way for a longer uninterrupted period of time .Most violent psychopaths get great sexual enjoyment from the power they feel with the fear and pain they create and he would have kept her alive as long as possible. He may have tried to cover this up by changing the crime scene and rearranging it to suit himself. He was young and strong and it is unlikely that anyone but him was dragging those very heavy dead bodies around. He may have asked to go and cover the child if he was uncertain that she was dead since she had been beaten and not shot. I can very easily see his father claiming to have committed the crime to the family to cover his sons mad actions and later to law enforcement especially if the son was the financial provider for the family and his loss would have left them in complete poverty. To me this is the simplest solution.

Once again you've hit a home run. I have to force myself not to binge watch your stories, because I want to savor them. This one is so sad. I suspect that it wasn't a case of espionage or anything like that-just a perv who was after the little girl, & the parents were killed because they were in the way. Such a shame the way they bungled the investigation so badly.

The neighbors refusing to speak to police about what they say and/or heard that night puts the lie to many of the theories that have been put forth by commenters here. Had Gustave "just" been a pedophile, they would have spoken up even if they thought it would hurt the parents. They were afraid of someone. I immediately thought that there might have been some kind of local crime organization. The fact that the elder Mr. Domenci had tattoos that turned off the police who interrogated him speaks volumes- they very well could have been Cosa Nostra. If that's the case, then he probably wouldn't have talked to the police even if he knew who had done it as the code of silence that criminal organizations have is such that even if they saw a murder committed and they were being accused of the crime they wouldn't talk to police. If him and his sons were toughs in the area, it would explain why no one talked in the neighborhood.
Very interesting case. Thanks, Oddie, for bringing us another wonderful case and another beautiful presentation!

Participating in inhumane and unethical interrogation techniques to coerce a confession should be punished harshly by giving those officers the same conviction as the guilty person would get for the crime. It's disgusting and akin to murder itself especially when the death penalty is on the line.

The fact that the parents were killed with a bullet to the head proves it was an easy kill to get them out of the way. The carrying away of the little girl and the brutal murder shows passion. She was raped and then murdered by this evil man whomever he was. He knew they were there since the family had gone up to the house to give them notice of their presence. Even if the family was killed for being spies, the fact remains the child was paid attention to and moved and murdered in a different way.
