PART 2 NOW AVAILABLE: • Improving My Bambu Lab...
APOLOGIES: we had to break this video up into TWO videos, so in this one, I test one of the more important parts, and then, in the next one, I test 3 more. More than that, I'm going to talk about what this means for the "closed ecosystem" of the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon, Bambu Lab P1P, and more. I'll explain why I think that this is a big deal, and what it means for the future of the 3D Printing industry as a whole.

Hey, so I am one of these Discord user who reached 42+mm³/s with PETG with this new hotend.
Before the last firmware update when the temperature runaway was still 3minutes to kick in, it was printing fine and could even reached 48mm³/s but since the last updat the thermal runaway errock kicks in after like 3sec of anormal temperature variation, 12:00 that's why you're having these errors and I do too and many others also with this new hotend and the last update. I've reached the Bambu support but they say the users can not adjust the thermal error time or the PID settings, so we're doomed to errors in printing because of Bambu Lab closing more and more their firmware... Such a shame

Noctua fan upgrades for quieter running. (needs wire splicing)
Tons of build plate types but your intro showed you are already doing that.
Led light upgrades or light strips above the print area.

I almost feel like bambulab designed this specifically so you didn't have to tinker lol. And any sort of upgrade plans they already have in mind. I love tinkering and upgrading things. But man when its comes to 3d printers its like a nightmare where I could spend hours if not days on something only to yield meager results and could have just left it alone. 😂

    • @waynefilkins8394
      @waynefilkins8394 Před rokem

This is true, but at the same time, it's very common to switch nozzle size. I think the anti-tinker motive would lead to them making it easier to replace nozzle. Other than that though they seem designed in a way where they don't need constant maintenance (unlike my damn ender 3's).

There are people who just want to print, and people who want to tinker. People who just want to print tend to print more, while tinkers tend to tinker more. My feeling, and I have shops including a number of machine tools, is that most people just want to print. I can say that it takes a lot of work to use open equipment. I made my own circuit boards and power supply for my first computer in 1975. But why would I want to go through anything like that today?

@@waynefilkins8394 well, that’s what I’m saying. But there are people out there who believe that open source is everything. That every product must have open source. It’s a need for them. So take an excellent printer like the Bamboo, and they’re not happy because it’s not open source. They believe that they need to change something because proprietary devices simply can’t be that good, and they think they’re being controlled by these companies anyway.

    • @mdbbox5660

@@melgross Open source gives people reassurance their machine won't slowly become trash if the company that make it doesn't... make it, and that problems can be addressed by the community if the manufacturer cannot/will not address them.
It seems that in this case, at least right now, Bambu is doing a pretty good job of making improvements and offering reasonably priced replacement parts and service. If that continues, the battle for open source is proportionally less important, but the potential for things to go south always exists.

I won't be putting in non Bambu parts simply because this is a system machine with matched components to work in a synergistic environment. The one thing I have seen far too (increasingly) often is "send the whole thing back in for warranty work". Hard NO on that. If I can get the parts I need from the aftermarket in half the time with low shipping costs and at the same quality there is NO WAY I'm waiting the time it will take to ship the whole kit back to bambu, wait for them to fix it and then ship it back to me. I would expect them to ship one out to me the minute I file a warranty claim and only once the new one shows up would I then ship the old one back at THEIR expense. That's how these warranty's should work. A perfect example was a K&N air filter I got in 2009. In 2015 I noticed a small issue with it and sent them an email. This was at 1pm on a Tuesday. Within 15 minutes they had responded and asked for a picture of the numbers printed on it (for part identification and for my mailing address for where they should send the replacement. A brand new, never used replacement was at my door at 11:30AM the next day. They are in the US and I'm in Canada, something like 3000 miles away from me. If a company can do that for a $100 air filter I d*mned well expect at least the same for a $1500 printer. If they can't do at least that much then I expect them to rush the replacement parts out to me in the same manner and at their expense. Too many people have been conditioned to accept sub-par warranty service for too long and it's this sort of nonsense that really drives the aftermarket to come up with solutions for the end user. All because the OEMs just won't do it themselves.

So, only in 9 months, prices dropped down to 11-15$ per complete hot end without fan. And nozzles are within 1.5-3$ depending on copper/ hardened steel and cht. Personally, I think Bambu was going after the "plug & play" market. I won't be messing with my P1P/AMS unless it requires parts to be replaced, and then I will buy those parts from Bambu. They have kept their part prices extremely reasonable. Heck, their whole hot end assembly is less expensive than some nozzles LOL. The first hotend got clogged to the point that I had to throw the whole thing away. the second one suddenly started printing the first level test with one strip that is in the back, off the plate. it also started having adhesion issues and layer shifting. I took out the hotend and found that it had bend, maybe because of the repeated banging against the nozzle wipe. I have since installed a Bambu Lab OEM hotend. it is just not worth it when i have to redo a 6 day print three times.

Patents take at least two years to be issued. That's why many products have the words "patent pending" on it. Just a warning to someone who might want to copy a product and bring it to market. The problem is that in our fast moving tech scene, many copiers can produce the product and sell a bunch, then go out of business before the IP owner can do anything about it.

  • @ablebaker8664

As a patent holder, I'm going to take a wild guess here.
Bambu has probably realized the futility of filing a design patent.
The only patent worth having is a utility patent and that requires some type of functional uniqueness that can't be anticipated as a natural evolution of an existing patent...
If something does a task pretty much the same way as an existing patent, just better, a design patent would probably be the best that could be hoped for, and those aren't worth the filing costs.
There really isn't anything about a 3D printer or the parts that it's built from, that's uniquely innovative...
That was the entire point of how home 3D printers became a thing.
They could be built out of off-the-shelf hardware with public collaboration.
Kudos to Bambu for saving their money and leaving third party add-ons open because, open or not, there really isn't a cost effective way to stop aftermarket parts.
Much better for the goodwill of makers and hardware hackers too, and we, are the target market.

I had no idea the volumetric flow rate was so different on the 3rd party set up + CHT. That's interesting. Prior to the X1C, I had the Revo 6 set up on my MK3s, and honestly that gave me tremendous flexibility to decide the tradeoff between speed and detail on every print. And the swap time was literally like 20s. Before the Revo, I never bothered swapping nozzles on the E3Dv6 ecosystem, because it was so easy to break the thermistor, or the heater. And then you'd also have to adjust the Z offset... It was just not worth it.
After getting the X1C, I was disappointed I couldn't do the nozzle swap thing anymore. I did shelled out and bought entire 0.2, 0.6 and 0.8mil hotend kits. However, even though I have full sets of them, I have found the X1C's speed has honestly negated my desire to do nozzle swaps. I did try it a few times, and if you are swapping a whole hotend, I can do it in under 5 min. It's 3 connectors and 2 screws. Not as good as the Revo, but certainly not bad at all. So I think speed of nozzle swapping isn't really a selling point. I doubt you can swap in a E3Dv6 nozzle faster than I can swap a whole hotend. If someone can make a X1C compatible Revo set up, that might be interesting. I am still waiting for my Obsidian nozzle (hey E3D, where the hell is it??)
Something I've seen mentioned is there might be some design flaw in the Bambu nozzle that makes it fall out after extended use due to the different metals used and thermal expansion rates over time. I haven't seen that on my printer, but then I am also not running prints 24/7.
I am curious, for tests that you achieved 40mm^3/s, did you have to up the temperature? For every filament I get now, I run that volumetric speed test, to determine the highest volumetric speed that filament can do, but I do normally up the temperatures too (220 to 230C with PLA for around 20mm^3/s). I think a lot of people's failed prints on the Bambu printers are simply because they are trying to run these crazy speeds with the same temperatures as they ran on their older bed slinger printers, that just ain't gonna work!
Another thing against nozzle swapping on the Bambu is the printer profiles in BambuSlicer are really only tuned at 0.2mm layer height. At 0.6mm layer height, all the "Other layer speed" settings are set to 200mm/s. Sure I can spend some time tuning it, but I haven't had that time, and haven't found the need.

I new this kind of stuff would be coming...I have been silently laughing at the people who have been denying themselves the pleasure of a Bambu printer because they can "only get parts from Bambu". And you are right, its only a matter of time before every part can be found just as good or better from aftermarket. That being said, unless it provides a significant advantage, I am going to buy from Bambu even if it costs a little more. That way i can support the development of even better printers.

@@LilApe Non serviceable for the moment. Of course Bambu would focus on selling the parts that are most likely to need replacement. In Time, there will be replacements for more and more but for now, I suspect they need nearly all the parts they produce just to keep up with sales. The Control boards, Heated Bed, and even the motion system will all be repairable given time. And in the mean time, I am absolutely loving my Bambu printer, how fast, accurate, and reliable it is. I have had so few issues with it compared to anything else I have purchased including several different variations of ender 3 printers from Creality. Plus, Lets say i am wrong and the entire system is designed to be tossed out like a cheap HP inkjet printer. By the time the machine reaches that point of wear it will certainly have paid for itself several times over, assuming you operate it for a business such as i do.

Contrary to popular belief, intellectual property protections are not intended to shield ideas themselves. Copyrights safeguard the expression of ideas, while patents protect inventions themselves. In simplified terms, you cannot patent an idea; you need a tangible product that functions as described in the patent application. Patenting a 3D printer component, such as a nozzle, would be extremely difficult unless it represents a completely novel design with an unprecedented mechanism. To clarify, Bambu Labs likely holds no patents on individual printer components. They might possess a design patent for the printer itself, preventing others from replicating it identically, but that's the extent of their protection. On the other hand, they might be the intellectual property holders of the firmware they use. I'm unable to confirm this without further investigation.

I think the only reason to use 3rd party parts, is if they don't ship to you. Bambu prices are very reasonable. Also has the added benefit that if you want to swap nozzles and not the entire assembly, you need to heat it up to do the swap making it a little safer. This video did nothing to convince me to purchase a 3rd party nozzle. Still a good video though and I look forward to pt 2.
