    I just bought a 1981 StarCraft SuperSport 18 yesterday and will be redoing the entire boat. It was an inboard and I will be beefing up the transom and mounting a 115hp on it. I am so impressed with you boat, I can't begin to explain. I love these boats and you did amazing work. I absolutely love how the polish hull came out. You are extremely talented, have great patience and did an outstanding job!!!

      Thank you for the comment! These are timeless platforms to build on! yeah this old girl was ridden hard and put away wet. The engineers relied on the wood components for structural integrity...once the transom, deck and/or side panels rot &/or get loose, it goes downhill. Good luck with your rebuild!

    Just got a ‘76 super sport 18 today, it needs the interior 100% redone like this one, but the hull and all the aluminum is solid. I was thinking about a 70 hp as well, makes me feel better seeing yours. I might just put a single side console I have on mine, I want lots of open room for fishing. Thanks for making this video, hopefully I won’t need to do so much aluminum fabrication on mine, it all looks pretty good, but now I know where to come get ideas if I do. Turned out phenomenal bud!

      thanks man! Yeah man...if that hull isn't all cracked and corroded, you can turn these boats around pretty quick. Mine was like an onion...more I peeled, the stinkier it got. You're not going to break any sound barrier w/ a 70hp johnny-rude; I've touched 35 with a 17p prop. I've since dropped to a 15p and it just feels alot more responsive...lose a little on the top-end of course but I like running around 3/4 throttle. I'm really happy with it.

      Thank you for the kind words Tracy! Yeah I went kind of extreme particularly on the wood sealing. There are alot of options for redoing a boat that are way more cost (and time) effective. If I were wanting to get on the water quickly and on the cheap, I'd seal (heavily) with a mixture of boiled linseed oil, mineral spirits and helmsman spar varnish (1part:2parts:1part; google "Old Timer's Formula")...then either paint or cover with vinyl. Tight Lines to you as well!

    Hey man, I want to congratulate you on this awesome restomod you did on a lovely StarCraft !
    May I ask, did you happen to have 3 (almost entirely) vertical holes on both sides of the hull, around where the seats would have been originally for the open deck area, just before the console starts? I'm asking because I just bought a StarCraft Offshore, which seems identical to yours and there are 3 holes just above the "spray rails" on both sides of mine, but the guy removed everything up front at the bow, so I don't have any ideas as to what they could've been for. I'll be patching them, but I like to know why/how something exists xD blame my OCD!

  • @Auzdin1
    @Auzdin1 Před 3 lety +1

    Amazing job...I have done lots of similar work to my 16' starcraft but not nearly to the quality of craftsmanship you are capable of. Did you have to do alot of sanding to the 3/4" plywood sheets for the transom before adding the epoxy/fibercloth so that it wouldnt be too tight sliding in? How come nobody is painting their boats below the waterline anymore? Seems like a trend. Would you say rolling/tipping the interlux primer and paint is easier or harder than spraying with a hvlp? comes out better or worse? What is it you are you cutting the wood out of the deck where you will be placing fasteners into and replacing the void with epoxy so that you are drilling/screwing into that as opposed to any wood?

    • @classiccat7403
      @classiccat7403  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Austin! I didn't have to do any sanding for fitment even with the added thickness of fiberglass/epoxy. If you're concerned with your lamination, maybe make a test piece to check the kneebrace & side mounts. If you're glassing, make sure you check the wood before glassing in case you do need to sand; you don't want to grind through your epoxy/glass. Yeah a few of us kept the lower halves naked...it's really nice not caring about dock rash, scratched paint, etc. The primary reason that I didn't use HVLP is that I don't having proper PPE (fresh-air supplied respirator). Spraying most 2 part paints or acrylic enamel with isocyanate-based hardener can mess you up if you're not careful. Making epoxy plugs is essential if you want to protect your deck. Drill an oversized hole, chamber both sides with a unibit so that the plugs are locked in place and can't fall out.

    I am currently restoring my ‘76 SS, and absolutely loved your video! Thank you for the video. Do you have any recommendations for replacing fuel tank ? I currently have a 12 gallon sitting on top of the floor under the splash well like yours, but wanted to get a bigger tank. I saw one from Moeller, 18 gallon belly shape that can go below deck. I believe the demensions fit.

    • @classiccat7403
      @classiccat7403  Před 3 měsíci

      Thank you and Good luck with your restore! Regarding fuel tanks, I'm not a fan of belly tanks unless you can access them (and remove ) without tearing apart the deck. Over in the starcraft section of iboats (or facebook), you can search (or ask) what folks recommend but usually it requires them to elevate the deck to accommodate the tank and connections. I personally like being able to pop the tank out if I need to fully drain/service, etc.

    @paulwise8679 Před 2 lety +1

    Couple more questions about this build(probably not my last couple). 1.Why the extra vertical risers behind the interior side panels? 2.What is the rational behind all of the additional spray rail bracing? Both took a lot of extra time and effort so you must have thought it important. My 74 Holiday has none of that bracing that you added and just a couple risers just like yours when you started so its relevant to my current situation.

    • @classiccat7403
      @classiccat7403  Před 2 lety +2

      my outer chine was already compromised resulting in rib-end cracks at the 1st set of rivet holes. if I were to do it again, I'd only add the vertical risers + big plates and skip doing the smaller reinforcement panels for the spray rail that disturbed the double-rivet seam (they were leaky on me until I sealed with G-flex). If you have alot of questions, I might suggest reviewing some of the completed builds and maybe even starting a thread on the starcraft section of iboats! forums.iboats.com/forum/starcraft-boats.131/

      Hi Jacob, Great engines! The carbs on this engine are fixed jet; nothing to adjust. Make sure it's clean as a whistle & follow the factory service manual for doing link & sync. What a well-meaning (but ill-informed) PO can screw up is the timing; proper spark advance at idle through mid-range (until you hit the max advance stop) is critical for these engines to run right.

      @@PopPopJoe that might be a stretch depending on grade of aluminum; i'd make sure you're using 5052. you can make aluminum malleable by heating it up...i use the soap trick to avoid overheating...stop heating when the soap turns black on the other side.

    That’s some nice work. I’ve got a similar project, and I’ve got to say that I’m really not a fan of the old mid sized 2strokes.
    However the cost of newer four strokes,or efi.2stroke make me wonder. If a 90hp gas engine weighs 600 lbs. and gas totals 700+lbs, How much for a similar powered electric and a bunch of batteries ? Meh just a thought... nice boat.

      Thanks! I can understand why folks might not like the old 2 smokes! I personally love their simplicity and reliability. The 3 cylinder OMC's have pretty good power to weight ratio...I believe the engine only weighs around 230#. The CMC adds another 50lbs or so. My only complaint with old 2 strokes is that you shouldn't idle them very long (things get fouled-up); all or nothing on the RPMs if you know what I mean.

      Hi Jay, i scraped/chipped all of the epoxy that a P.O. smeared in there. then used an orange nyalox cup brush on a drill to clean up the corrosion...and a dremel to get into any shallow pitting. from there I did a careful acid wash of the pitted areas and smeared marine tex into the pits so they don't backfill with water down the road. Deep pits, i drilled a hole and plugged with a solid rivet if it was small...larger corroded areas got exterior patches smeared with 5200.

      Dow XPS (Extruded Polystyrene). It's a very dense closed-cell foam so it won't retain any water. avoid the EPS or worse, open cell styrofoam that came originally in these old boats.

    Why was it so important to you to glass everthing that was wood? Wouldnt resin without glass have been enough?

    • @classiccat7403
      @classiccat7403  Před 2 lety +1

      Great Question! I'm surprised you're the 1st to ask! The glass does 2 things...the primary purpose is to prevent grain checking. No matter how much epoxy you pile on, grain checking will crack the epoxy (exposing untreated wood) if it doesn't have glass; it acts like rebar in concrete. Most won't see it b/c they cover the plywood in vinyl or carpet. The other thing it does is add strength. You'd swear you're walking on 3/4" PLY even though I used 1/2" PLY to keep weight down & console heights (and windshield alignment) the same. Here's a good read on all things epoxy: www.westsystem.com/wp-content/uploads/GougeonBook-061205-1.pdf

    What was used to strip the bottom?

    • @classiccat7403
      @classiccat7403  Před 3 lety

      It was probably Zip Strip paint stripper but you don't see that too often in stores. It's a gel that you put down with a chip brush. Work in small sections and cover with plastic wrap so the solvent doesn't evaporate too fast. Lowes has a JASCO heavy duty gel stripper that seems to work well. I hear that the Rustoleum Aircraft Remover is also pretty good...never used it myself though.

      You're welcome for the diarrhea lol! I never tallied up the total cost...probably ~ 5k including the initial purchase (that's the number I'll tell my wife if she ever asks.) It was spread over the course of a few years so it didn't burn too bad. Paint (Interlux system), epoxy/fiberglass were the 2 larger costs (probably around $1200 combined)...and well worth the expense. Tinned wire & cable is pretty pricey as well. She has quite a few trips under her belt, alot of good fish hit her deck and she still cleans-up like new. Good luck with the resto! check out the Starcraft section of iboats.com. We're still pretty active over there helping others w/ their restorations!
