Oh man, I'm from Hawaii, specifically where Ellison Onizuka was from, and the Challenger disaster is so sad. It's hard not to tear up hearing about how badly that mission was handled. With the Big Island being so rural at that time, you just didn't get role models like this in STEM. Especially one who could speak pidgin! This event truly crushed my home. One of my favorite places to go as a kid was the Onizuka Space Center in at the Kona airport, but it's closed now due to not having enough funding. If I ever win the lottery opening that museum up again will be one of the first things I do!
I remember he talked at my elementary school. It was such an honor to meet him and shake his hand. He wanted all of us rural keikis to know that we could be anything if we studied and worked hard

You said, the challenger exploded on live TV, I was seven when it happened and I swear I watched it live. However, it is being said that it was NOT live and that “we” are experiencing the Mandela affect. 🤷🏽♀️. Perhaps, you should explore that in upcoming videos if you already have not.

My home town is birth of the Dream Flight USA, a Children's Mission, is one of the most innovative science and outer space education programs in existence.The Spirit of Education, the Dream Flight Space Station/Shuttle. The vehicle contains over two hours of hands on science education. ~proud space cadet circa 99/2000~ 🤓 my late mom, a teacher of course was really affected by the challenger tragedy and made sure I always had access to the best space science growing up. Have you ever heard of the PEPCON explosion? After what happened to Challenger, the shuttle program was put on hold for a couple of years. The company that manufactured the rocket fuel for the shuttles (PEPCON) was right outside of Las Vegas and was still manufacturing plus had the stockpiled fuel in storage due to the shuttles not being launched.
A fire broke out leading to the entire plant being obliterated in a literal mushroom cloud, along with the nearby marshmallow factory.
I was in Green Valley when it happened, all the windows blown out on homes, we ran out to watch the rising plume and were knocked to the ground by a shockwave. It’s supposedly the largest explosion in the U.S. (second to atomic bomb testing). It was destructive, several people were killed, and of course only after something like that happened, did regulations change. All of Henderson and the Southern neighborhoods of Las Vegas had to evacuate due to fears of poisonous gas released during the explosion- it was a lot for my 20 year old brain to take on.
