- what to expect from an arthroscopic shoulder surgery for labral tear and dislocation of the shoulder. In this video i vlog my experience of having a partial tear of the labrum in my shoulder and the experience of surgery. Over the past year and a half i have had shoulder pain which turned out to be a labral tear and could not fix it with physio therapy or even cortisone injections. I had no choice but to undergo surgery to repair my shoulder.

I had my surgery exactly before 10 days. After I had my surgery, it felt like hell and I told to myself that why did I go for this procedure as it was so painful that I wasn't able to sleep. But trust me, looking back now, it's the best decision I have ever made. I will be able to do all the stuff I used to do before 6 years when I had this injury.
Thank God for you comment. Lol I'm freaking out about it. I tore my labrum pitching..and i am scared I could never throw again
Just had this surgery 3 weeks ago. 8 years of pain and finally someone believed me when I told them something was wrong.
I feel your pain. Literally. I had it confirmed almost 10 years ago, but it wasn't half as bas as it is now. So everyone other than the doctor didn't believe there was anything wrong. Mine is getting more unstable by the day. How has your recovery been? A friend of mine had it done and he said it was about 3 months before he could be somewhat normal.
@@madskrillz2 I'm at about 90% right now. My shoulder still hurts a little when I move certain ways, but my Physical Therapist said it's more than likely scar tissue that is causing the pain. Just rebuilding the muscle now that's gonna be a pain 😂
@@TonersR6 well that's pretty reassuring. I have recently just started getting back into shape and really don't want to go back to square one. Starting to feel like I don't really have much of a choice anymore.
@@madskrillz2 just make sure if you do elect to have the surgery, you have good insurance. It would have cost me $35,000 if I didn't have the insurance that I do. Thankfully my out of pocket cost was just under $18
I’ve had my issues for 7 years got surgery a week ago
You did a really good job of explaining this, I really appreciate you doing this. I've never had surgery either and have always been very curious of how things go down. Thanks again mate!
I dislocated my shoulder 2 weeks ago and just find out I got a “nearly” 360 labral tear and I’m shitting bricks. I pray my surgery goes well, Alhamdulillah. My whole life has flipped, I’ve never felt this depressed before.
In sha allah kheir. Just make sure you do the Physio afterwards to strengthen your muscles.👍
Me too brother me too
Just subbed to your channel! Left shoulder was diagnosed with Impingement Shoulder Type 2 with no tears 7 years ago. Now they say there is a full thickness tear and my shoulder is mildly arthritic! Apparently, I need to fix that otherwise I will ending up with a more serious surgery, which is total replacement! My right shoulder started to feel weird and a bit painful tried the RICE thing for a couple of weeks but it didn't help much. I did an MRI yesterday and the doctor says I have a hook shaped aromion aka Impingement Shoulder syndrome aka same thing I have with the left shoulder and that I needed surgery to clean it out to avoid getting it damaged like the left shoulder!
So, here I am on youtube to see what people have to say about it... happy to have found your channel... please keep the updates coming as I am considering to go under the knife in a month or so :)
Get well soon!
Hi and welcome aboard👍. As far as I am aware full thickness tear can not heal on it own and will require surgery to fix. It’s also common for the opposite shoulder to sustain an injury after due to over use and over compensating for the injured shoulder, which I may be in that position now. I personally tried everything I could before considering surgery as the recovery is slow and painful. But at the end of the day you have to do what is best for you and if that requires surgery so be it. Keep me posted on your journey, many other people here will benefit from your experience including myself.
I really appreciate you putting these videos together. Thank you so much. Have to have this surgery soon.
How is your shoulder now ?
I’m having the same issues. Partial dislocation and lots of pain and numbness. Good to see how you’re feeling after your surgery. Can’t wait for this pain to be fixed.
I have had shoulder problems for like 10 years and I found that have a labral tear and cyst in my shoulder and my main problem is numbness and tingling in my fingers which is driving me crazy. I’m going to my doctors tomorrow and complain that Physiotherapy hasn’t done anything to my shoulder, I think operation is what I need.
Dude, you look pretty together for a guy that just had surgery! Hope I am that with it when I come out!
Just had the same surgery yesterday but thank God it went well.
HeyBill,
Thanks for this video. You did a good job explaining the process. I’ve just been diagnosed with a “slap” tear in my left shoulder. It’s been hurting real bad for about a year. I’m scheduled for surgery in 2 weeks. Looking forward to this…
Godspeed to you 🙏
Fantastic Bill, such a relief everything went well i had been wondering how things went. Your experience of the surgery process was just like my surgery (umbilical hernia repair) and i tried to stay awake too but no chance lol. Just make sure you follow the doctors instructions to the letter, swallow your pride and let the missus carry the shopping etc even towards the end of your restrictions when you think it's feeling better. Dont do anything to jeopardize the repair. Stocked your procedure went well, onward and upwards now.
Thanks, that’s going to be the hard part. Hopefully a quick and successful recovery.
Glad to see this went well. I'm going in for my second SLAP / rotator cuff procedure in a few weeks (dominant arm this time around) with the same surgeon who did my first procedure
How did you tear it ? And joe had post op been ?
Very helpful. Thanks pal
Thank you for this great video
My shoulder still clicks when I lift it out to the side. As my cuffs get stronger the clicking is reducing. If you are really concerned about this obviously see your surgeon for advise. I have three Kevlar anchors in my shoulder so in my case if the surgery was to come undone it would be due to pretty significant trauma and would be accompanied with agonising pain and complete loss of range of motion. I’m not a doctor just parroting what my surgeon told me.
I’ve dealt with shoulder dislocation from 2014 to now and I went and got my shoulder fixed last Friday. Mine was called Arthroscopic Shoulder Surgery. I’ve watched tons of videos so I learned a lot.
Tell me about your shoulder condition now. I wanted to do it on my shoulder too. my doctor also told me the same surgical process as yours. So please tell me is it good to have a surgery done for stabilizing it will be a big help.
@@shrikarishansaini718 I would highly recommend it. I can use my shoulder so much more without any pain. I can’t fully sleep on it but it’s still not popping out and it doesn’t hurt I just get that off feeling when I lay on that side sometimes but nothing hurts and I’m so glad I got the surgery. Definitely look it up and read about it and watch videos about it. That’s what I did.
@@HorrorFanatic666 thanks 😊
@@HorrorFanatic666wow brother so much glad to hear u that.....
Friggin hilarious I'm going in for the same thing thanks mate love your sense of humour.
Is there anything you cant do the same as before the injury? Also, are you able to do everything the same as before you tore it?
I really enjoyed your video of your experience. I've had 3 shoulder surgeries and a 4th coming up in 3 weeks. My first surgery after talking to the dr I looked at my friend and said "isn't he a dork?" I dont remember saying that 😂 I'm actually excited for my 4th surgery after watching this! Lol
Lol, I didn’t enjoy that part at all. First hour or so after waking up from surgery we’re not pleasant for me at all.
What 4 surgery you had?
Thanks for the video. I just found out I have a full circumferential labrum tear with lots of cartilage loose in my left shoulder so it’s going to need fixing. Bodybuilding and martial arts over the years destroyed it. We have a lot of the same symptoms. Heavy stuff easy but reaching for something on my desk is hard! Ha, I watched a few surgical videos already. Was a paramedic so not squeamish. Meeting with my surgeon tomorrow. Maybe I’ll vlog it all.
I got slap tear,I works out for 15years,I can't make my decision whether do surgery
i just got that surgery i cant believe you have energy to make a video after that
I just had the surgery 2 weeks ago. How long before you could lift your arm straight over your head with no pain or discomfort?
tore my right rotator cuff and labrum in april. my first physio appointment is in September. dont think it would help 🤷🏻♂️
can’t sleep well at night too since i usually sleep turning more towards my right.
Amazing video! Made me laugh! I am due to go in for shoulder arthroscopic surgery also. Hope all is recovering well! And thanks for the heads up.
no problem glad you enjoyed it. Dont worry its not as bad as most people make out just be positive a lot of it is mental.
Nichole hughes good luck!
Saaame. Getting mine June 25th.
Going into surgery on the 27th. This helps thank you. Lol just watched the surgery lmao it looks horrible.
How much was the surgery and what are my options if I don’t have health insurance ? Any tips ? I have the exact same problem and I can’t box for that reason. Any help is appreciated !
Yep, any time a patient babbles about a “super-comfey” hospital bed or stretcher...you know the drugs have kicked in. 😉
Thank you
I fell very hard and dislocated my right shoulder 12 weeks ago.
Have another week and half to go before surgery.
My shoulder movement is very limited.
I have a tendon tear on the Supraspinatus, and Infraspinatus muscles.
They will be doing a subacromial decompression removing 2 centimeters, also the same to the clavicale.
Half of the labrum is seperated, and a repair of the humerus.
Not looking forward to the surgery, but I have been in pain since it happened.
This is a workman comp accident, so they could care less about me.
Had my left done '07 labrum + rotator 6 wks sling. Right shoulder '09 - rotator -5 wks sling. 4 months till back to work. Lots of arthritis in both shoulders, the arthritis is degrading my ligament in my shoulders...pain and clicking when moving. will need shoulder replacement in Dec '20.

Just finished my last day of therapy for the surgery today! It was a rough experience and i still have to get my right one checked out. Hope your road goes swell mate!
Aidan Southall I’m in the same boat! I haven’t had the surgery done yet on my left shoulder but I’m almost positive I tore my right also. Smh I don’t know if I should get them done back to back or wait a couple years.
Aidan I have a question for you. Did you ever do anything in the first couple of weeks that made you worry about damaging the repair itself? I’ve caught myself doing dumb things without realizing such as mopping my floor, leaning on it, and picking things up that are around 5 lbs. I just want to know if you had any experiences like this and if it affected you in any way? None of these things have hurt me and that is why I don’t even realize it. I had my surgery 2.5 weeks ago.
Cj Mcculley yes of course. Even though im healed with everything, i still fear for a retear or dislocation. Early in surgery i have done some minor things myself that scared me, such as taking a shower, bagging groceries, sleeping on it, and having it rested in an awkward position. But they have in no way affected me or messed it up. I would still try to be careful tho, for youre still pretty early in surgery. Also as the months go by, youll see yourself slowly progress and do more and more things you couldnt do before. I hope this helps and im happy to answer any other questions for you. Wish you luck bro👍🏼
DatBoyK21 im sorry to hear that dude. It really sucks and it’s uncomfortable to deal with everyday so i feel your pain and frustration. Im always scared of doing somethin again, and i always feel a slight popping and cracking feelin in my unfixed shoulder. Im also unsure about when to get it fixed. I could Get is fixed and miss my last year of football and loose more weight and muscle and be qualified for the military. Or i could go thru football with the one fixed shoulder, risk screwing either of them up again, and risk being able to join the military if it dislocates again. Tough options but for me im just going to go with the flow and wish myself the best of luck lmao. Shit happens and life doesnt always go right, but im sure me and you both have less things to complain about compared to other people. I always try to look on the brighter side of things and you should too! Remember were not the only ones and there are more than 200,000 cases of shoulder injuries in the US every year! I think... 😂. Anyways, I wish you luck on your plan mate🤙🏼
Aidan Southall thank you!
I tore my labrum and have surgery in two days. Thank you for this video, feeling a little more comfortable!
How’s your shoulder so far?
@@davidjitt8097 thanks for asking! It’s pretty much made a full recovery and I’m back doing what I normally do. Only thing left is working out and building that muscle back, it’s a process!
@@eastonbrown964 what’s the first week like (pain wise)
@@KhalidG67 not gonna lie it’s pretty awful. The littlest movements were painful so I pretty much just sat in a recliner for three of four days before trying to do anything more than walk around. The first couple weeks are brutal but after that it’ll get better quickly. Like I said I’ve made a full recovery and I’m glad I had the surgery
Also i saw the same video that you were talking about in the video! 😂😂 I regret watching it before surgery lmao.
Lol yeah wasn’t the smartest idea. So you have had your surgery and completed rehab?
trainingwithbill lol. And yes! It went by relatively quicker than i thought. I should be good on working out without problems, but just have to go slow with increasing weight.
Looking forward to training again! All the best 👍

Yall can do it guys!! Its been 4 months since my surgery and im 16 years old. It goes by quick think postive!!!
You play any sports?
how are you?
Hey I'm 16 too putting of the surgery for a couple months because can't afford 6 month down time rn, did you fully get back to heavy weight lifting? I have a 7 to 12 slap tear, same symptoms as guy in video.
Just had mine done a wk ago and feel fine considering. Almost zero pain. The nerve block was real freaky and the only thing I didn't like about the surgery. My arm slipped out of the sling twice with me not realizing it because of the numbness which lasted about 18hrs. So far I'm glad I did it and the best item I could have purchased was a bidet.
the nerve block was the hardest part for me too. Very odd feeling. Get good at wiping with the other hand!!!
I get mine done Nov 18 2020 and my shoulder grinds it sounds so bad. Idk y it grinds though. I like to know the after math how was it after it wasn’t numb and what did therapy feel like?
I have a slight lebrum tear 7-11 oclock, for years and its not bothering, the thing thats bothering me is a cyst the great where the tear is and now its pressing on my nerve causing severe pain. I'm weighing my option, i heard the cyst can be drained with ultrasound and needle, i think id liek to go that route before surgery.
I’m getting this surgery in two weeks and I watched multiple videos because I was unclear on exactly what would be happening and now I’m legitimately scared
I love your recap. Hilarious!
The surgery on my torn labrum wasn't as bad as the surgery for my torn rotar cuff, labrum, bicep tendon that surgery was a bit worse but overall the recovery is harder
get better soon, bill!
Thanks hopefully a speedy and successful recovery 👍
I just had my surgery on Thursday last week. It feels a lot better I still can’t move my arm at all it’s kind of rough walking, changing your shirt, taking a shower.
Thank you so much for posting this my surgery is coming mid June and I have the same exact thing as you
You’re very welcome, I just want it to be 100 % back to normal. The recovery process is very slow just keep that in mind

Hi , updates ?
ahmad elshbasy yes I’m still having slight pain and constant cracking when I extend my shoulder and when I make sudden movements
Update ?
Do you know what shoulder sling they gave you? I asked for the nicer upgraded one but did not get it, the one I have is an absolute pain in the butt to put on and off, and it seems like it moves around when I’m sleeping. Thank you for the videos
Hi, unfortunately there is no brand on the sling just a symbol. The most important thing to look for is the cushion/pillow that helps keep your arm away from your body and also a good comfortable strap that goes around your shoulder/neck. Hope this helps 👍
Had a slap repair 16 weeks ago, slowly getting better. Don’t worry guys if you are still experiencing clicking or popping at this stage, your rotator cuff muscles will likely not be strong enough yet to keep the shoulder fully stable. If you have had this injury for a while like I have ( three years) your cuffs will likely be week. Obviously if the clicking is accompanied with pain you should see a doctor but otherwise it’s just part of the process. Mine is still tight Aswell the recovery from this surgery is usually longer much than three months. Don’t push it too much at this stage it’s a slow process. Need to get my left one done Aswell.
Were u ever able to get back to lifting?
He's fucked up after all the big talk loll , still popping and clicking he fucked up for life
I had this surgery 10 weeks ago and i can move how ever i want and make my come back in MMA in 3 months. In the beginning it was feeling like i wil never be the same
@R.Loso Im having this surgery in a month time. Will be using a sling for 6 weeks. Labrum tear, no dislocated shoulder issues.
@R.Loso anywhere from 5 to 8 weeks is what I was told
He bro how is your mma journey going on??
Tore my labrum two years ago playing football. Did PT and strengthened it but still dislocated a couple times throughout two years playing basketball or even slipping and catching myself. Getting surgery tomorrow and I hope I can make a full recovery
Was it fully recovered?
Nazmul Hasan Nishad yes, went to PT for 6-7 months and now am able to do everything. My arm can’t go back quite as far as it used to but it’s still very good. I’m back at gym and haven’t had any problems with lifting yet.
Did they have to put something down your throat or just a mask
Just had this procedure today. A couple questions for you:
1. Were you able to shower with your sling?
2. How did you get a shirt on or off?
Any permanent scar after surgery ?
I have same one too and I'm gonna go for surgery so any useful info ?
Thats exactly what I did and it made me sick at my stomach. Doctor said I shouldn't have watched that. I said I can't unwatch it now doc. I am terrified of what I'm about to go through.

How was it?
Sorry guys I never saw these responses lol. I had surgery in June 2020 and was in a sling until the end of august. After that months of PT sucked but I healed up well. Took a while to get full strength and range back but now almost 2 years later my shoulder feels perfectly normal
@@BWorldYari wow sounds like quite a long recovery.
11 years of lifting weights have ruined both my labrums, i have however been able to train around it with minor pain in my biceps tendons and impingement symptoms now and then, but because of the instability i'm getting my first repaired in august and the other one 3-4 months later, so it sure is going to be a tough road ahead.
It’s not a fun experience, very slow recovery process and going back to the gym will be even longer. I’ve been told 6 -12 months before heavy lifting. Only time will tell.
How bad was instability? Did it just feel loose? I have very minor pain, but my joint just feels sloppy. Not like dislocating tho.
How'd it go?
I have had shoulder instability and dislocations for 20 years and I am finally getting my shoulder fixed with a labrum tear procedure with some anchors that they're going to put in . Thank you for the video!!
What was your age doing the surgery?
And how was the surgery? Is it completely ok now?
I have all the symptoms you have described in your video. My MRI came with a type 2 slap lesion, apparently two of the muscles bicep and another one are tear. I wonder if therapy will help the muscles to get attached again or just go with surgery?
sandra annabelle O'Mary that’s what I was hoping, but told in no uncertain terms that I WILL - need surgery - rotator cuff tear 🙏🏼🇦🇺
@sandra, I thought the same thing for my son , who plays high school football. January 2020 we found out it was a labrum tear, Feb got 2nd opinion and started therapy, covid shut down in March, started back therapy in June. All summer lifted weights no problem and get to football practice 3rd week of Sept hurt bad with contact, got 3rd opinion and now ready to schedule surgery. So upset with myself my son will miss this year of football because mom was nervous about surgery in Jan. We would have had a whole 9 months to recover since everything was shut down practically.
My Labra is also tear in 6 to 9 clock position
I have surgery in 3 days so I need to buy my own sling or do they provide
I had this same surgery today on my right shoulder labrum tear repair. How long did it take before you start icing your shoulder?
How does your shoulder feel now ? Mate
With your labrum tear, did you also have Winging Scapula and additionally, did it pop out of place and make clicking noises
I had a top to bottom labrum tear and it was always popping out, I also had tendinosis which made post op really hard. And I have winged scapula pretty bad which I’ll have to work on later.. take care of your injuries right away :/
* Thickening and mild increased signal intensity of supraspinatous tendon near its insertion - suggests tendinosis.
* irregularity of the anteroinferior labrum with linear hyperintesity extending from the labral surface to the subperiosteal region of the anterior scapular neck---- suggests possbility of labral tear (anterior labroligamenotus periosteal sleeve avulsion)
* An elongated multioculated cyst commencing near the anteroinferior glenoid margin and tracking aneroinferiorly---- suggests paralabral cyst.
* Mild fatty infiltration of the few fibres of the subscapularis muscle in the inferolateral aspect suggests focal chronic atrophy.

Should I go for surgery
My husband has his surgery today. How long was the surgery roughly? On his paperwork said it could take up to 6 hours. I appreciate you making these videos of your surgery and recovery!
Paullinna Ducharme Personally my surgery took just an hour. It was really quick! Then after they just let me sleep for a few hours and I was discharged after since it was out patient. So i was in and out within the day!
Im having surgery for the same reason i have a labrum tear and i am havng full open surgery i am very nervous
i laughed so hard at your post op videos lol.
Private health fund? What hospital?
Had a turn labrum, 12 to 6 shoulder tear from a missed punch from back in christmas 2017. No dislocation or clicking .... some movements makes my shoulder hurt .... only thing i was told not to do was a bench press.
I do medium weight liftning and pushups... noticed that if you keep your shoulder muscles strong by training itll benefit you real good on the long run.
Thank god , no surgery no shit .. take it easy , keep your muscles strong, make sure you always workout wearing a shoulder brace

Hey man, can you do an update? How's the long term sustainability?
I'm not OP, but my buddy had surgery on his shoulder from several dislocations, after the surgery, he said he never had an issue again.
Posterior labrum repair here 8oclock to 11oclock. Ac joint debrided too. No issues with biceps tendon. During surgery. But does anyone else have biceps pain 5-6 weeks after surgery? I'm at week 6 and certain movments really hurt the front of shoulder all the way down to biceps. Anyone else have this issue?
I'm on day 2 after repairing hillsachs lesion and torn labrum and rotator cuff. I have been in alot of pain and wondering if you have any pointers for helping getting into sleeping position?
Hi , it get better over time obviously but I will include this in my next update video in a day or two. Number one tip is get a good sling that has the cushion similar to mine that you can see in my videos.i sleep with it on and also a pillow under the affected shoulder . This way I can sleep on my side without needing to move around to get comfortable throughout the night. Once again the sling is very important for sleep, comfort and recovery which many people Don’t factor in. Hang in there 👍👍
how is it now?

How many days to take total recovery
Hello! I just had my labrum surgery about 2 weeks ago. I’ve been really worried that I have done things to it to mess the repair up. I just want know if it’s common to do that? I have done things such as pick things up that are about 5 pounds, or lean on it without even noticing, and the other day I even was mopping my floor before I even realized that I can’t do that. I was just concerned that I have messed up the repair and I would like to know if you had any incidents you were concerned about? I’m pretty good about wearing my sling but occasionally I take it out to rest and do dumb things without realizing.
Hi you should try and keep the sling on to prevent movement in the shoulder. I know it’s really uncomfortable but I kept mine on for the entire first 6 weeks ( apart from showering and exercises )and even slept in it. Better safe then sorry
trainingwithbill did you get another mri done after your surgery to make sure things went well?
No I haven’t, I’m assuming this won’t be done again unless the issues with the shoulder are not resolved with the surgery. And this won’t happen till months after as recovery takes months
Me too!!! Was it damaged further?
How is your recovery going? My doctor told me to expect pretty much a full recovery if I do the SLAP repair.
Every surgery and recovery will be different. Time frames from 3 months to a year and most people I have spoken to say it’s never 100% after surgery.
My surgeon told me the same thing. Dont know how true is that

Just had surgery for a torn labrum in my shoulder yesterday the nerve block has worn off and it hurts like absolute hell
I know it's been several months but I hope you're doing well! I'm about to undergo this surgery soon.
About to have my surgery tomorrow and this video is EXACTLY how I am feeling and yes made the mistake of watching the op video...
Renee Braddock how did it go? My doctor today just told what I tore and get surgery the 19th of September
@@ShelbyPlaysMC it went fine! And you'll be fine! I had a bankart lesion and needed two anchors. I was pretty nervous but the nurses and drugs make you feel at ease. :)
@@reneeclaire8965 did it help the pain?
Betty Smith surgery helped with pain. I still haven’t got full movement back but stretching out the shoulder daily and going to physio is a must. Glad I did it. Wish I did it sooner.
I have my (SLAP REPAIR) surgery next month July 27th 2022 😩
Hi there..just wanted to ask a few questions about your symptoms!! I'm going to orthopedic doctor soon..im hoping surgery since I've been dealing with this for 15 yrs..thanks
No problem, what did you want to know?
@@trainingwithbill2067 my injury is from falling off horses since I used to train them..I always fell on my right shoulder/shoulder blade..I can move the ball of my shoulder antirior about half an inch..it pops, grinds, clicks..I have weakness, mild pain on the inside..all the time..at night I can't sleep..also 15 yrs ago my MRI showed I tore my labrum..and a month ago I lift something above my head and I heard a tearing noise..I can use my arm most of the time, but as son as I stop and put my arm down..it feels like I just did a 2 hour workout..also the top part of my shoulder looks like it has no muscle on it..so that's my story..I'm hoping doc says surgery because I'm tired of not having my right arm..
My symptoms were very similar, fatigue, burning, popping and clicking. I tried as many things as I could prior to going ahead with surgery. Definitely have surgery as a last resort
@@trainingwithbill2067 hi..so I'm getting my MRI with contrast in a few days!! Also..did you always have symptoms?? Did yours get worse with activity or just unbearable all the time? Thanks again..
How's your shoulder now
