I dont get this...the Sony isnt made to be point and shoot. So sure...the crazy processed pictures will be great from the iphone for instant social media posting. Taking 2 mins to set the camera up in the pro apps for pictures and video pushes it miles ahead of the iphone and no artificial sharpening...but meh

    Excellent review.
Thank you for actually using the pro mode.
I think Sony's focus becomes clear when you look at the front facing camera.
Sony used a 8mp samsung front facing camera and i suspect it is because photographers rarely take selfies and typically prefer to either be taking the photo or a proper group shot.
Well with eye tracking you can just flip the phone around and do a classic delayed photo.
I prefer the sony for the natural colors manual white balance and the more hands off approach to sharpness.
Also one thing i noticed the portraits of your friend looked like unnatural skin smoothing was applied to his face on the iphone.
Only thing i wish they did was add a macro camera like the s21 ultra or iphone 13.

Actually the front camera is pants as its a SAMSING ISOCELL sensor. You see back in the day Samsung were making Sony display (xperia 1 mark 1) and Samsung played a DIRTY TRICK (Typical of samsung) they FORCED Sony into a corner that if we do your display's then you MUST use our (crappy) sensors in your phones.
The proof of this is that on the 1 mark 1 there is 3X4 sensors are Samsung only the ULTRAWIDE is Sony.
On the 1 MK II The main and ultrawide are from Sony but telephoto and selfie are SamDung. (see where this is headed?).
The 1 MK III The main sensors are all Sony but the Crappy selfie camera is an INFERIOR Samsung one (3X Sony 1x Samsung)
and on the 1 IV they are ALL from Sony.
So the inferior performance on the 1 iii selfie you can entirely blame Samsung for that! Proving that Samsung image sensors really are not fit for the purpose!

Although I prefer the sony with good lighting, I wish they improved their computational photography. Ik their target audience doesn't need that but I feel you don't have to cater just to the enthusiasts , they can definitely add a few extra things for regular people

    • @anecro
      @anecro Před rokem

In my opinion they don't really need to touch basic mode in daylight. It looks great and natural as it is, tampering with it will only create gaps going further from reality, which is what I and their target audience really like about their phones even if it means a shorter dynamic range than other devices.
I just wish they'd properly develop a night mode and improve artificially lit indoors scene processing. Their phones can do the job without a night mode just fine, but it would be nice to be able to toggle a dedicated night mode for some extra edge in the darkest areas.

Nicely done and detailed review on comparison. Yes, in most shots I totally agree that Iphone looks a bit sharpened. Xperia has finer details so no need to be sharpened maybe because of better optics? Just look at Iphone's farthest digital zoom vs. Sony's physical one. At a viewing distance, Xperia just renders the overall color and sharpness just better with ample light.

One thing i have noticed on my 5 iii AND on my 1 iii is that in video you cannot do over 24FPS over 1080p video, hdr on and have active stabiliusation onn all at the same time. You can switch off HDR and have as many fps as you wish with active stabilisation. But as soon as you enable HDR then only 24 fps is the option to have active stabilition. This might be the reason why it was shaky, as you had it on 30FPS. I tested this on Cinema and video pro and on both the 5 iii AND the 1 iii. Xperia 1 III is more suitable for pro photographers and videographers, especially if used as a monitor as each have been individually color-calibrated. Also the Xperia 1 III has S-Cinetone so works well as a backup cam for a7S III and future cams that have S-Cinetone.

Any decent mobile can be used by pro, if you use the camera in pro mode then you can get the photos you want and you can use lightroom later also, it doesn't worth to pay a lot for the last pro mobile if you are going to use it in pro mode.
The idea of getting a last top mobile is that in auto takes pro shots for normal ppl.

It doesnt make ANY sense to compare Sony phones like you do with other phones.
Sonys philosophy, especially for the Pro phones, is to give the best hardware they can and let the user do the rest. They dont focus on Software, they focus on hardware. Thats why there are special apps which allow you to handle the hardware however you like. All other companies do the opposite, they focus on the Software which accompanies the „lower hardware“.
Thats why these comparison dont make any sense for Sony Pro phones. You have to adapt your reviews for that.
While all other companies use the word „Pro“ as a gimmick, Sony actually aims their Pro phones to professionals. These are not phones for everyone. These are mainly for photographers or journalists, in short, for creators. You cant compare the Sony phones like you do with all others.

After seeing this comparison i prefer a7s iii over Xperia 1 iii.. my preference just saying that Sony Xperia Smartphones just changed their camera interface & add new hardware to look professional photography but their result this year still behind the competition which really make me think that Xperia camera is not comparable to real "photography camera like a7s 111" since the comparison between 1iii VS iphone 13 Pro Max make a huge gap differences...

The auto processing on the iPhone makes photos too sharp and ugly, a lot of people are complaining and Apple really needs remove this. I personally shoot raw on my 11 pro and the results are much better. Only when shooting raw do you see the full capabilities of the iPhone’s camera (or any phone for that matter).
