Tuner cars are cars that can be easily modified- or tuned. But what does that mean?! When you change something under the hood, your engine has to be tuned to work with it! This Science Garage looks at the history of “tuning,” from what started as delicate mechanical adjustments, to how it exists today- a marriage between the computer tech of of the future and the forced induction and air/fuel mixes that are as old as cars themselves.
Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

Few years ago I had BMW 530D E60. Before we tuned it we measured on dyno to be 158kw. After they were finished with tuning it was doing 205kw and it was all done electronically without any hardware updates. I don't know what they did but after leaving tuning shop and trying to jump green light that was blinking the power change was VERY noticeable. It was a bit wet, I was doing like 40km/h and as soon as I floored it the wheels span.
I remember after tuning if I was doing 100km/ha and floored for over-take the speed would just keep climbing at insane rate. Once was over taking 3 trucks at onnce and by the time it took me to overtake the last one I was doing 160km/ha. Before the tuning maximum top speed that I've reached was 235km/ha, after the tunning it was 260km/ha but that was the limit of the speedometer.
What they did was increase boost pressure and the amount of fuel injected, it's fairly straightforward. Most turbocharged cars can make some 20-30% more power with the stock components than they are programmed to do, because they are tuned for efficiency rather than maximum performance, plus safety margins.
@@BigUriel that’s not entirely true. Usually the way you up the boost is by switching to e85, and because it runs cooler while maintaining a good octane number, you can increase boost by like 30-40% without doing anything else. But you can’t run e85 unless you have larger injectors and fuel pump, because the energy density of e85 is about 30% lower than pump gas, so you need to spray that much more fuel and run a different AfR. I did this to my LGT and went from 12 psi peak to 16.7psi peak, and gained about 35hp and 30lbft. But make sure you get a dyno tune by a pro. I just had Cameron Dawes help me with a tune I was doing myself, and because he didn’t do it all himself on a dyno, it wasn’t refined, and I ended up having to put my stock pump back in, and I should have adjusted the tune for that, but didn’t, and it ran lean for too long and I bent a valve and ruined a piston, and had to get a rebuild that cost $4k. So be careful with this shit. Don’t cut corners like I did.
@@jonosterman2878 yea, booze up the diesel. Sérgio is totally right.
@@jonosterman2878 proper dyno is underrated
I kept telling myself, when I get my car I’m gonna throw a supercharger and a new intake and fuel inject it without knowing I’d have to get all that tuned... so here I am

It's the same for turbo engines. My stock A3 1.8 TFSI went from 180hp (250nm) to 240hp (330nm) just a simple stage I tune.

@@sandski5174 how is it running now?
@@ryanleese7762 Solid. I bought it with 73k kms tuned it around 90k, currently it's done around 112k kms.
Only issue was a broken water pump. Either the pump was already shit from the factory or the tune made it crack.
My mechanic was not sure about it. Just bad luck probably. No problems since it got fixed.
Had to change the front tyres and breaking pads after 30k kms but that was to be expected.
Till the engine hits the right temperature I'll barely go above 2000 rpm. I always put 98 octan benzine in it and because of all the horror story s I regular check my oil level but so far around every 10k kms it needs to have a little bit. I think around 2L so far.

The first 4 mins make no sense, since he has no clue what he's talking about.
Why couldn't school be like this?
Because it's 2018 and unfortunately for some reason that means that creativity in schools is dead.
Yeah, sponsored schools without any useful information.
no. go learn ur guaranteed curriculum.
Homeschooling was pretty legit. When we learned about the space race (history class) my mom had my sister and me make high test peroxide and a very little hydrazine (chemistry class) to learn about hypergolic propellant. We also once had a trebuchet war in the front yard with some other homeschool kids to learn about mechanical moments.
Actually, my HS was like this - the teachers were incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about their subject matter and were able to present and explain the concepts and theories in an engaging manner, one that hooked the student and reeled you in. No doubt this is why I am a math, science and technology nerd and a finance and accounting geek..... and why I was able to retire at age 45.....

Love that you gave us the history of the OBDII port as well and connected it all back to tuning 👌 I swear I have seen people make an extra 40-50 hp on stock internals though!
A stock d16y8 barely hits 100 hp, with a Tune and turbo the stock internals can safely hit 350
They're called AU Fords mate, thunder downunder 😉🤙🏽🍻🇦🇺
It depends on the OEM and how overbuilt they made their product. Modern Toyota trucks (and some of their cars) are a great example of being over engineered for long term reliability, and having a great starting point for mods.
The Can. version of the Tacoma has the same frame strength as a Dodge/GMC/Ford 1/2ton, so it can take massive suspension, tire size, and engine upgrades without a problem.
With ecu’s, getting the trouble codes doesn’t tell you what’s wrong. Usually it directs you to an area of the vehicle where you then generally have to do some sort of pinpoint test to find out if it’s one of a few things. People come in to dealers all the time like “I already have the code.” Like it means something

I have to ask tho as someone who knows nothing about cars, is completely new, but wants to get into cars, what is there that is changeable? Like what exactly can I work on with a car/ change without just "leaving it to a professional" ?
This is funny because you most certainly can get power from just ecu tubing depending on platform. Say my turbo deisel Duramax truck you can get well over 200 hp to the wheels just with ecu tuning alone pretty much adding more fueling and changing your main injection timing and pulse width/time.
You're right in europe chip tuning is really popular almost every guy has a stage 1 factory car
@Yassine Ouadi Yea I chipped mine as soon as diesel fuel hit 5+usd/gallon since it was advertised to get 2-3 mpg increase and it did I went from about 18.6 to 21.5 mpg when using the extreme tune on the programmer I started off with. I kept the programmer but had it converted into an edge insight monitor to keep an eye on things, and then I started messing with doing tuning myself with EFILive. I pulled around an extra 50% hp/Tq because I wanted to keep it safe for my transmission but with that and exhaust/intake mods and other supporting mods I get mid 23 mpg avg and before the intake fuel delivery it dynoed at 562 whp and 1162 wTq it should be at or over 600 hp and mid 1200s for tq. It's not bad for a truck that came with 360 engine hp and 650 ftlbs of tq. It does mid to low 12 sec 1/4 miles, mid 4 sec 0-60, and weighs ~7200 lbs.
Subarus, as well. The factory had to create some pretty conservative tunes in order for some of their turbo engines to pass US emissions.
