  • Turbo is one of the most exciting words in the world of cars. Twin turbo, bi turbo, big turbo, twin scroll. Turbos make cars more efficient, faster and they make awesome blow off valve noises. How do they work? What is boost? What is the difference between twin turbo and bi turbo? What are the benefits and disadvantages of each?
    Bart teaches us how cars work by blowing stuff up and cutting things in half. It’s a science show for the car lover who’s easily bored. Join Bart as he explains the science behind everything automotive. This is cars down to the atom. This is Science Garage.

    I will be honest, I like lag. Whenever you stomp on the accelerator it starts to goes then it's just throws you in your seat and I love that. No lag is good for pure performance but I prefer a few second before it final kicks in just for that suspense and thrill before the boost kicks in.

      Race car drivers (like for those monstrously powerful 1980's turbo F1 cars) just anticipated the lag into their driving technique; they'd hold the throttle while braking on corners to keep pressure up so they wouldn't have any lag at the exit.

      Many people don't get how stickers work. They actually multyply the power of the engine at all rpm and conditions, so if your engine has more power and you have stickers worth of 50% power increse, you will make more use of them by having a more powerful engine. That's why race cars have both powerful engines and stickers.

      In a normal naturally aspirated engine the air is sucked in like a vacuum from the piston going down during the intake stroke. Only so much air can be sucked in this way. The only way to get more air in is to force it in instead of letting it get sucked in. Turbochargers and superchargers do the same exact thing. They force air into the combustion chamber. It's just the way they do it is different. Obviously he explained turbo in this video. A supercharger does not use the exhaust to spin it. It's actually connected just like your air conditioner and alternator and spins from a belt so there is no lag because you don't have to wait for the exhaust to spin it. You get instant power, no lag.

      Nim from what i understand. Superchargers are prone to belt slips among other things. Don’t know much about it myself but I feel that’s what im going to get.

    • @hazardousgaming1136
      @hazardousgaming1136 Před 3 lety +2

      @Nim superchargers rob hp from the engine to pull the belt to spin it, then the supercharger gives back the hp plus a little more. whilst a turbo takes longer, it uses exhaust gasses to power it. plus turbos are a little bit more tune able then super chargers
