Listen man I was stranded with my family on a trip using a rental Tesla didn’t receive much help from the rental company except them wanting to charge me money to assist me I got a hotel room and went to CZcams and found your video I really appreciate you I followed your directions to the t and I got myself out of that jam thanks a lot
Wow, sorry to hear about getting stranded, but also really glad this helped!
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!!!!🎉❤
Super helpful! Many years ago I was driving an original Model S and came back at the end of a ski day to find the 12v was dead. 10 degrees, getting dark, on the side of a mountain far from town and everyone was going home. Fortunately Tesla was able to arrange a recovery, but a simple jump would have been much easier.
These days when road tripping I always carry a 12v battery (usually a deep cycle marine) to run air pumps and power an inverter, so it's great to know it can serve as a jump battery as well.
For me, getting stranded is scary and not knowing what to do is VERY scary.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't use that little 12 volt A23 battery to jump start the car, right?
@@WilbertIsRandomcorrect
Thanks you saved me it would be better if you keep portable jump box
Great to hear, thanks!
Intro cracked me up. good video
Awesome video. NOT long to keep people like me interested.
If the main car battery is dead and have access to frunk, is it possible to put the car on neutral, so the driver can push the car manually?
Good info... thank you!
It's work for me, thank you
Jump box works totally fine.
It worked! You saved me!
Awesome, thanks for sharing this!
Thank you for the wonderful video.
Thank you for watching!
One of the best things I have done to my 2021 model 3 is replacing the 12V battery at around 60k miles. The battery was about $80 from the service center and my 15 minutes of labor. Even during the recent polar vortex weather, park-n-fly for 5 days at -15F degree, the car was just fine. I will do another swap at around 100k.
Yep, cheap insurance.
How about the new 2022+ Teslas with the 15.7v batteries?
Great and helpful video, thanks! Not sure if you’d know the answer to this, but can a portable jump starter battery pack jump the Tesla 12v? You mentioned a running ICE car would offer a bit excessive voltage than needed for the Tesla, so not sure if it even works if it would be as safe as jumping from another vehicle. Would you have any ideas or thoughts on this?
Yes, a portable jump battery can work if it's designed to supply 12v over a longer period of time than it takes to typically jump an ICE car.
Love your video.
Thank you!
excellent suggestion to tape a spare battery to the cable, wow these cars are different.
Thanks for watching and yes, whole new world...
❤thx
Your instructions are that the high voltage batteries would charge your weak or dead 12 volt - if they could; they would have. The 12 v is either dead as in not going to work or the high voltage battery is dead first - and hence your 12 was not charged and you make it revive senerio won't work; you have to then charge your main battery pack to do anything. You also suggested the 15v lithium pack this doesn't apply to ..why not they fail all the time?
10:34 I can't find your video for information about not being able to use a 12v lithium battery to replace the lead acid battery. What's the link?
Thanks for the information in the video. It's very helpful!
Please read my response (down a few) to @createnew from 2 months ago.
Glad you got something out of the video and hope you subscribed!
@@mmark300 Thanks, I sure did subscribe! You gave me the information I've been looking for.
I saw your response about the lithium battery. That's what I thought because I read somewhere that Tesla redesigned some boards to be compatible with the lithium batteries and so it's not possible with my car that came with the lead acid battery.
Just saw a video like you described and the red Tesla was stuck on the rollback tow truck. And second the charging cable is locked into the tesla. So the car was stuck on the rollback and the tow truck driver can't get the car off. I can't get the car off the road back and the tow truck driver can't leave.
Think they stopped using old school batteries on ice vehicles about 15 years ago then start using gel, but i do miss the lead acid batteries as they last years keep it topped up for so long then drain the thing, pour some acid in it and more life in the battery,, you can't beat really old stuff when it was made to last, modern stuff don't last, modern cars any type, washing machine,tv ect ect. Its a real shame
What if it doesnt have that little hole? 2014 model s
I would like to see how to reboot a Tesla when all soft booting fails and the working 12 volt battery must be disconnected so the Tesla will hard reboot.
So always keep a 12V battery and a 10mm wrench in the frunk just in case?
Your tesla should be much better at warning you ahead of time that your 12v is dying, just don't mess around after the first warning - fix it
Just watched a reel where the Tesla driver drove and ended up stranded. Got towed to charging station but it was dead and the little door wouldn't open. Would this "jump start" help in that situation? I'm not a Tesla owner but it could be a useful tidbit of info.
Depends on why the charging door wouldn't open - a dead 12v would cause more problems than that, so that probably wasn't why. There is a manual release for that door in the trunk. Or it could just be pulled open if in a pinch.
All doors have a mechanical release inside the car including the charging door. if all non high power stuff require the 12V battery and it is dead then they would not open in any way, but if you keep the 12 V front jumper plugged then you would have the means to unlock other doors without even needing to jump anything. Jumping may be helpful if you dont have enough backup power charge capacity to charge via the front wires.
Are you still gonna do the video on why not to install a Lithium battery? Sounds like you can get constant 12v battery warnings if you do and have to reset the car all the time.
I've been avoiding it bc I don't like to do negative videos, especially about a company that has been giving me good customer service. No, they never sponsored me on any way.
But, i can't recommend this battery. 12v bus stability is compromised which really stresses the PCS ($1100) in the Tesla, the BMS is not very good and you will most likely get errors when it's cold as it's capacity goes way down and confuses the tesla sw.
A pull cannot to open the frunk would've been much smarter considering your jumper cables are gonna be inside the car 🤦♂️
Normally the car will keep the 12 V battery charged. When that no longer is possible the 12 V battery is dead, and no other charging can do what the car can't?
Can the old lead acid battery be replaced by a new lithium one?
Yes, and I did, but I don't recommend it.
If the car is dead, how can you unlock the car? I'm having that issue. :(
Can you open the frunk with the little battery trick? If so, then charge the 12v and use your key card or phone to open the door.
👍
What do I do I'd I have a lithium ion?
Hope it never dies :) Seriously, I'm not sure, but it should last way longer than the old batteries do, so don't be too concerned - yet.
@@mmark300 my car was from copart it was dead. Alot more complicated, but I figured it out and got it running. The LV how has its own BMS
Well mine just die had car for 6 months
Hi. I actually tried (cant access the car and the battery is dead). However, the frunk didnt open and what happened is that the alarm went off. Any advice anyone?
The car must still have enough low voltage power that it thinks you're trying to steal it, or something. The app still won't open the hood?
Not true about the new Lithium ion 16 volt batteries lasting way longer. Mines is few months old under 5500 miles battery died.
The lithium 12v that came with your later model tesla?
@@mmark300 yes I had to jumpstart my car and drive it to the service center today to have them diagnose it. A tow truck came and jump started it yesterday but only advised me to drive around for 5 mins which I did while he waited and had me sign a document and left. 3 hours later car died again. When I contacted Tesla roadside service I was told this time I’ll have to pay for tow service since I didn’t drive it to service center last time. So I decided to wait until today and jump started the car myself and dropped it off. I could see in the service menu before I left…the 12v lithium battery was charging very fast like several percent per minute using the main battery once the vehicle was turned on.
@@ratukamina Man, that sucks.
That's a faulty battery, though, not the norm.
@@mmark300 hopefully…. but my car 7 seater model had 3rd row usb c not working from factory main controller needed to be replaced. So hopefully it’s not another controller type issue.
Hi, I wonder if a 1.5v have enough juice to open the trunk.
nope.
of course not.
How’d you unlock doors if 12v battery was dead?
A complete how-to is in the video.
@@mmark3003:56. How did you open the car with your phone when you just said the battery is completely dead??? Makes no sense.
@Mabeylater293 This is explained at 3:20. This works if the battery is dead or, in this case, the doors are already unlocked, so I had to unlock the doors first. Watch again, you'll get it as it continues.
Doors may be locked, then battery dies, will the 12v or 9v jump open frunk?
@@mikeaieta236
Yes! Only if the 12V battery is dead.
Tesla didn't think the 12v battery right, garbage, the battery keeps dying
How often does it die on you? I got it replaced in October and just died a few days ago. Having issues getting into the Frunk.
Where the heck is the jump location Mark!!?
Where is the jump location? Huh? The jump "location" is the dead battery. ~7 min mark.
How do you unlock the car if the battery is dead?
It's explained in the video at around 3:20
Why not just use a battery maintainer?
A battery maintainer every day? That would be a huge pain and not sure it would add that much more life to it.
@@mmark300 Not every day but if you're not going to drive it for a while
my car was completed dead today so this did not work. I had a tow truck driver try charging the car with these wires and nothing happened...sucked.
Charging the car with these wires? Not sure what you mean by that.
@@mmark300 sorry, I meant popping the frunk.
@@ronin120 Why are you pooping in your frunk? That was not in the instructions.
@@tuxbuttocks8973 damn you auto correct!!

Doesn't have what?
You cannot open your door at all if it’s dead like he said it’s a brick it’s happening to me right now
Open your hood using a 9 volt battery then hook up another 12 volt battery source to get your doors open. It's in the video
@@mmark300 Instead of getting a 12V source to jump the battery, can you just replace the 12V battery at this point? I've seen in other videos for replacing the 12V that you need to disconnect the high voltage connector under the back seat, but I can't open my doors. Can I just replace the 12V battery?
@@alfredpedroza I would first connect the new battery to your old one, like you're going to jump it. Then you can open your doors and power down the car in order to replace the old battery.
czcams.com/video/xUOy5uomA7g/video.html
No need for a jump starter while you are locked out ! All you need is to hide a tiny12volt 🔋 in your front bumper for that day that probably never happens.
And remember, driving an EV you hardly need to have any maintenance . You brake on the engines 95% of the time.
But the ludicrous Torque eats tires 😂
Carry a jump starter hidden deep down under the trunk together with a tire repair / pressure system they can be a life saver.
But wait if the 12 volt system is dead it is brick as you have already stated and you can't unlock the doors the to be able to use the emergency access to the frunk. So your video makes no sense. If you can only use the emergency access with the doors unlocked and you can't unlock the doors with the 12 volt battery dead then none of this is doable. Explain please.
How much of the video did you watch? The part you need starts at about 1:36...
He said this method works under two conditions. If the car is unlocked OR if the 12v battery is completely dead.
Why are you saying never install a Ohmmu Lithium battery at the end of your video??? I want to hear it. Test show it last longer. Tesla itself is going with a Lithium replacement if you want one.I believe it's the cost the Lithium batteries there $450 dollars. I'm sitting and laughing how any normal car needs only a cable and this needs batteries to be jump started. Think Elon over engineered this bit and went for weight savings instead of ease of use savings.
It doesn't really need additional batteries. If someone comes to jump you, they have a battery that can be used to open the frunk also.
Even worse then, you need a whole car to open a frunk. Just admit that a steel cable would have been the same and that Elon could have saved more than those 100g by installing a normal roof instead of making it out of glass.
@@eivis13Do all new cars have a manual cable to open the hoods? I don't think so.
@@mmark300 If those cars that don't have a cable linkage to the hood open it only 6 months after i pressed a button to open it then i'd rather drive a mid 60s Fiat made in USSR.
Don't waste your time, Setup a call with Tesla, they will come home and replace the battery in 20min, only $247 including installation and sw update. M3 and MY is cheaper.
Yeah, if you're home.
How do you get them to come out
Please don’t be hysterical like that, Mark. Of course we can still open the front driver and passenger doors with a dead 12 Volt battery. Exaggerate is so not looking good on you.
How
