Beautiful!!!!!!! Literally a life saver if it is cold outside!!
Jim, this video is one of the many reasons why your channel is one of the best Tesla content channels. No time wasting 45 second intro, no overblown ego, just great tips and information. Thanks very much.
Wow. I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
No time wasting 45 second? More like time wasted 2.5 minutes 🤣. I still appreciate the info but why not cut right to it
After getting a lot of feedback, I thought I would share some updates from what I have learned. It appears that the Tesla software won't let the frunk open unless the battery is either really dead OR you have your phone key with you and you wake up the screen - like when you open the door. Otherwise, the A23 battery will not work. This is good as it will prevent some random person from opening your car if you hide the batteries in the front. Thanks for all the great feedback!
Recommend deleting this video then replace it with updated information.
I was wondering about this… thanks again
If you are going to jump start it with 12V battery, why need a small battery to open the hook? just use the same jump start battery to open the hook. No?
@nzhong169 you can yes. The thought likely is that you would have a jumper pack in the frunk and use a 12v battery to gain access to it.
@@nzhong169 Hook? I assume you mean 'hood' but you said 'hook' twice.
You don’t need this extra battery to open your frunk. If you are already going to jump your Tesla from another 12V source, you simply connect the jumper cables to those wire leads via jumper cables. That is the intended use, no additional battery needs to be stored on the vehicle
unless no other 12v is available.
So where IS your booster battery and jumper cables? In the Frunk? In the trunk? Surprise, you can't get to it! That's unless you pop the Frunk and jump the car's 12 battery. Then you can get your 12v booster and jumper cables to jump the car's 12v which allows you to unlock the whole car. So you do need the mini 12v battery.
That's unless you have a 12v booster source that's not stored in the car.
Yes, you can just attach the jumper cables to the above cables and open the frunk and then jumpstart the car.
Good thing is now the car notifies u when 12v is low
This great video was clearly made for me. I got me the adaptors, I got me the pucks, I got me the tire repair kit, I got me the compressor, I got me lotsa other stuff too. Now I'll have a battery hidden in that little tow slot thingy. Thanks so much.
Excellent tip Jim! Thank you. Waiting for my 23 Y expected late March. Just ordered the battery. Keep up the great work. Also ordered the tire repair kit you recommended.
M3 owner for three years and new sub. I knew about the possibility of being locked out by a dead battery but was unaware of this trick. Thanks!
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! dealing with a 12v battery issue now
After 9 months with my Tesla Y, I thought I knew everything about my baby, until I found your video! Informative and super helpful, heading to the store to buy that little battery to hide in that compartment in the bumper. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
On Thursday of this past week my A23-12 v battery that I use in my GTO transmitter to open my gate to my property died so I ordered two from the Home Depot. This morning I bumped into your CZcams channel and I will place the second battery in the location you mentioned. Thank you for sharing and I agree that Tesla owners are.
Active. My next battery 12 v for the Tesla model 3 will be a lithium ion 12-volt. I just read your update on the dead 12-volt battery and since I do not use a cellphone to open the car door but the card key on the b-pillar I will have to do more research. I have read that the 12-volt that is lead that comes with a car is good for four and a half to five years, I will preorder a new 12 volt battery and place it in my garage and install it a half-year early as mine is now four and a half years old.
Oh yeah baby, I hit subscribe...I am researching, digesting, processing, learning, and enjoying the adventure as I prepare to move from my Hybrid into EV...Thank you for the video...
This was a great tip. Thanks. However, in my x, if you look under the front of your car there are two panels. Underneath one of my panels is a frunk release lever, in case something happens and you can’t digitally open your trunk. I’m sure the other models have one, too. Something worth looking into. 😊
Your videos are really informative. Love it.
Excellent and vital video for Tesla owners! Thank you for creating this video!
Thats got to be the best tip I've ever gotten anywhere...ever. I would never have known that had I not come across your channel looking for how to get to my 12v in my Model S...glad I stopped to check it out!!!
O
Read the replies above because the software updates have changed it and this doesn’t always work! The battery Hass to be completely done now, which is a new precaution with the latest software.
Thank you for another fantastic video! I am awaiting the arrival of my 2023 MY LR (due between 2/21-3/21). My hallway is filled with deliveries for the MY, from floor pads , screen cover, tire compressor…Tesla card case! Now, I will be ordering the batteries you recommended.
Thanks for organizing today’s Tesla Rally, traveling from West Des Moines, up to Ledgers State Park! I enjoyed the good company, beautiful scenery and great BBQ food!
You’re the only person I’ve seen mention this! Thank you!
That doesn’t happen often… Thanks!
Great tip and I love the storage spot idea! I’ll be doing this to our Y. 👍
Thanks Brian. It's a cheap insurance policy for the battery. Hopefully set and forget.
If you're going to get a jump start you don't need a battery at all. Just use the jumper leads of the battery that's going to jump start it. Also... the newer Tesla's have a 16v battery, not 12v. Jump starting will get you into your car but if that battery is dead it will need to be replaced.
Awesome. Thanks for this tip on using the special battery to open the Frunk. Didn't realize they made that size 12v battery in the size of a AAA battery. I have a brand new Tesla model Y, so hopefully my vehicle 12V battery will be good for a while.
Thanks again and take care.
THIS WORKED!! Thanks!!!
Excellent Tip. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful!
Great tip and great channel!!! Thanks Iowa Tesla Guy!
Thank you for posting this video. Your tip worked like a charm save myself probably thousands of dollars waiting for Tesla service to come unplug the car then for Tesla roadside to come tow the car pretty far away and then for Tesla to change the battery.
Very, very helpful video
Great video. Speaking of Iowa, hope Okoboji gets some chargers installed someday soon. Even some J1772 or Destination. Go there every summer and think I'll have to stick to my gas car for now.
There are a lot of places that could use more charging in Iowa. Thanks for watching!
Hi Thanks for the tip Watching from Australia Cheers
Thank you for the videos. I have ordered a model Y LR AWD because of what I learned from your videos. You will be getting the referral miles from my delivery in 2 weeks. Keep on sharing the knowledge!!
Thank you. Thank you! You will love your Model Y. I'm certain of it! Thanks for watching and thanks for the miles!
Genius thanks! I see that it works in Iowa. Will it work in South Carolina? This one video showed up in my feed and now I'm subscribing to your channel
WOW, Extremely interesting. Thank you.
My wife carries an A23 battery in her purse when we travel outside our HOME area and local Service Center here in St Louis. I have a Plug Kit and Air Compressor. My Y will be 2 years old in July 2022, am thinking about doing a pre-emptive strike replacing the 12V battery BEFORE it fails. The recent cost for a Mobil Tech service call is about $125 to replace the 12V battery.
Thanks much, 9 volt battery did it for me
thank you Jim, awesome tip.
This is good information. But the thing that worries me is someone can use this trick to open up your frunk.
I was always told that the frunk was the safest place to lock valuables in a locked Tesla because it couldn't be opened from the outside without the car being unlocked.
This video makes it seem that anyone with one of those batteries and access to a Tesla can get into your frunk.
Thanks for the content.
Should have hidden manual lever to open frunk. Good tip to correct an engineering mistake.
A 9v battery works as well. I keep my 12v jumper unit in the Frunk so I can jump myself or anyone else. You are so right Jim! Us Tesla drivers are prepared.
Thanks for the tip. Ordered it.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Awesome tip. Thanks Jim.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
Incredible, thanks so much
Great advice... thank you!
Outstanding! Thank You!!!
Nice video! 👍 Which spare tyre and jack are recommended for the Tesla Model Y?
A common household 9V battery also works fine. Put it in the same place on a small ziplock bag. Thanks and I love your videos!
I haven't tried this myself but there are a number of videos stating that the 9V battery doesn't work anymore. I don't know if this is a software thing on the Tesla or if they changed the hardware along the way. I'll give it a try when I get a chance. Thanks for watching!
This is ingenious! I had no idea. Question: could you not hook up jumper cables to the two small tow hook wires and get the same effect if you don’t have one of these little batteries?
Definitely we can. But that wouldn't sound smart and deserve a video
to add, i keep a NOCO battery jumper pack in my frunk, so once its opened i have something to give power to the 12v battery!
Nice! Thanks!
Awesome advice about storing the backup battery behind the plug! Three years ago when I got my Model 3, anyone could open my frunk with a 9 volt battery, but with a software update, it won’t open unless the 12 volt battery is dead. There is some backup 12 volt power in the penthouse of the high voltage battery, that is why Tesla has you unplug the connector beneath the left side of the back seat. I know that this is way beyond the scope of this video, but I threw it in for those that are interested in more information ℹ️
All great info. I didn't want to get too complicated. If the batter is dead, this tip should work. Thanks for watching!
brilliant tip
I like the battery idea. Definitely good to have one. I'd probably hide it on another part of your vehicle. Any reasonably intelligent thief will pop that panel and find it very convenient that you put the battery they need right there. Maybe find a spot in the belly panel, or the air intake?
Thanks for a great little tip. I hope I never need to use it, but ….
That is a battery used for garage door openers. So if you found someone with a garage door opener in their car you could borrow the battery and do that. Also any place that sells garage door openers would probably have those batteries in stock. But the smart move would be to replace the Tesla 12 volt battery when you get the notice on the screen that it needs replacing.
Great job. Thanks
Goated Video!!
If you don’t happen to have the fancy 12 V battery, you should be able to MacGyver it with eight AA batteries. Just tape them in series (end-to-end), and 8 * 1.5V = 12V.
Absolutely correct! Just a little bulkier but will get the job done. Thanks for watching!
Yes. Any 12v source will do, including jumper cables from an ICE car.
A 9V battery also works.
@@Gyrobobb or even another Tesla 12 volt battery
I already have a 12V battery used for powering my Yamaha keyboard when playing outdoor. It last about 4 hours. Will make sure to carry it in my Tesla. The idea of 8 AA batteries connected in series is also a great one.
A standard 9v battery worked for me to open the frunk
Brilliant !
Nice job!
Excellent tip of the day …! Quick question … why you choose Model Y then Model 3 … can you throw some light on your decision that justifies to go with Y ?
I think you gave me a topic for another video. Almost bought a 3. Actually like the look of the 3 better. For me, went with the Y for a number of reasons. Cargo space. Higher seating position. Better ground clearance. Liked the blacked out look (the 3 still had chrome when I got my Y). I wanted the option to camp and thought the Y would be better and it is. Live in cold climate and wanted the heat pump (3 has this now). I'm sure there are more but I'll need to think on it. Thanks for watching!
my battery went dead over the weekend. i ended up using jumper cables from my other car to touch those towhook wires and it popped open. then removed the terminal and trickle charge the battery. s
Probably in the Owner's manual, but worth special mention. Thanks.
I'm sure it is. I probably need to go back and read the fine print. Thanks for watching!
Yes, it’s in there.
Very clever! Thank you : )
Glad it was helpful!
Iowa Tesla Guy!!! The algorithm really picked me up on this one! I just landed in Iowa and the first video to pop up is yours! What part?
Eastern Iowa - near Cedar Rapids. Thanks for watching! Enjoy your visit!
When it does come time to replace the 12V battery, I would say, whether it is in warranty or not, spend the extra money and get the Ohmmu lithium ion 12V battery. This is actually standard on all Teslas (even the 3 and Y) as of 2022 (well not the Ohmmu one, but an official one).
It's not compatible, stop spreading misinformation
@erikandmarcie that's absolutely incorrect. I've had the Ohmmu Model 3 LiPo battery in my car for 2 years.
@@nathanc.4862 Yep...I've had one for 3 weeks now. I did have some initial issues, but they said it was due to an outdated firmware. Ohmmu support was extremely helpful and I haven't had any issues since.
@@StormsparkPegasus what were the initial issues, and how were they resolved?
@@lowfuel6089 The car giving replace 12V battery errors. With the new battery once they get the new app version out it will be possible to do over the air firmware updates, but that won't be until spring. So for now they have to swap the battery with one with a newer firmware. I have since had the error come up again and am currently working with their support.
Thank you ❤
My baby got stuck in my car while the 12 volt died. I had to break my window to get her out. It’s actually pretty insane that this design flaw exist.
Gold. Gold I tell ya!
One thing to remember with the plug kits is that a plug alone is not condidered a proper repair. The speed rating is removed and the weight rating is reduced. Also, run flat tires are not considered repairable, so a rire that has been plugged must be replaced, along with the tire on the other side of the axle, as soon as possible. Run flat tires are limited as to speed and distance
Can I use the miniature A23 btry?
Thank you!
I think it would also be wise to put two 12 Volt connectors on these wires, to allow you to easily jump the car’s regular 12 Volt battery, which allows the car’s computer system to operate. Without it, your car won’t accept a charge from any source, Supercharger, or wall outlet. I ran out of power when I was inexperienced and had to be towed to a nearby Tesla Supercharger, only to discover that not only was the car’s larger primary Lithium battery bank dead, but also the standard 12 Volt battery was dead. This prevented the in-car computer from operating and therefore it couldn’t “handshake” with the Supercharger cable, to determine who is responsible for paying for the cost of the charge and couldn’t connect to the Supercharger to begin charging the car’s main Lithium power source that powers the drivetrain.
Great tip!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Genius!!!!
How to on an early Model S with a round nose?
Can I use booster cable attached to the 12v battery of any ICE car for this purpose?
Good stuff!
Thanks. I appreciate that. Thanks for watching!
Great video
Excellent information. The representative told me when I picked up my 2023 Model 3, that it did have the new 12 volt ion battery. What actually charges the 12 volt battery? I keep the car plugged in. I'm not a daily driver.Thanks.
If you have a newer car with the lithium low-voltage battery, then it's not actually 12 volts anymore; I think it's 16. To answer your question, the low-voltage battery is charged from the high-voltage battery using a DC-DC converter. In normal operation you don't need to do anything to keep the low-voltage battery charged. However, it is recommended that you keep the car plugged in, because the car periodically wakes up to run system tests, charge the low voltage battery, etc., and if you're plugged in to the wall, it will use AC power for these things instead of depleting the high-voltage/traction battery.
Look for this in your manual:
About the High Voltage Battery
Model 3 has one of the most sophisticated battery systems in the world. The most important way to preserve the high voltage Battery is to LEAVE YOUR VEHICLE PLUGGED IN when you are not using it. This is particularly important if you are not planning to drive Model 3 for several weeks.
NOTE: When left idle and unplugged, your vehicle periodically uses energy from the Battery for system tests and recharging the low voltage battery when necessary
Interesting video. BTW, you are not supposed to hold the battery as you did.
Frunk can be opened by a regular 9V battery as well. Test it
Isn't this a serious security flaw. Anyone with a small battery can now access your frunk? Or am I missing something here?
I wonder if this will work for the newer Model Y that is 16V not 12V?
Hey there. Is there anything preventing a malicious person using that port to gain access to a Tesla owner's frunk? Also, I wonder if a vandal could spike a Tesla owners electrical system by hooking up a higher voltage source.
Hopefully the wires are on a closed loop system to a solenoid and hopefully gaining access to the frunk doesn't allow access to the rest of the vehicle by any other means.
I wish I had answers to both your questions but I don't. For me, Teslas aren't that common where I live and I highly doubt that anyone would even know enough to try this. If I find out, I'll come back to this. Thanks for watching!
This trick won't work unless the 12V battery is really dead or you have your tesla card or phone key with you. IOW, a bad guy with only a 12v source can not unlock the frunk.
Is this same on Tesla model x 2017?
If i need another car to jumpstart the batter, why can’t i use the other car to open the frunk? Akaik the A23 battery and the other car’s battery are 12v so I dont get the point of A23 battery…
is that a free hack to help someone to steal my holiday shopping 🛍️ gifts from my model-y frunk? I hope Tesla has some software safeguards for this
Why do you want access to 12V battery? So that you can charge it or replace with another 12V. Both of those scenarios mean you already have 12V source and thanks to your great info, all needed to open that frunk. That little battery looks like a little waste.
Yeah this is all pointless. Using a tiny battery to open the frunk when you already have a jump starter that could have opened the frunk
I had the same thought, but I think the idea is that some people will want to store one of those 12V booster packs in the frunk, so the small battery gives you access to it. I can see this making sense if you're travelling far off the beaten path.
Notes to self. Purchase a A23 battery, they output 12 volts. Pop off the circle in the from bumper attach positive to positive side of the battery negative to negative end. Pop your frunk. Keep battery hidden on the car someplace
Did you show, then, how to get at the dead 12V?🌿
As a Vehicle recovery driver , please don’t more the wires, went out to one where the driver had moved them ,so you could not get to them unless the bonnet was open. ( which you can’t do without12v )
What do you mean?
Don't let the poles touch? 🫤
@@travelwithtesla there is a connection behide front bumper near to towing hole. If you lock yourself out or it run out of power. It’s possibly to jump the connection with a booster pack. ( it’s a know way to unlock car) some owner more them because of this which is fine until you are stuck at the roadside.
Newer Teslas have a 16V lithium ion battery unlike older ones. The real thing is don’t run your car down to almost empty…charge your battery when you get between 10% - 20%.
Newer Teslas have a 16 volt battery, wonder if that little 12v battery would still work.
How about a link to all the other stuff you talked about like compressor, tire fix kit, lifter, etc.
Just added all the links to the video description. Thanks!
@@iowatesla thank you!
What isn't being mentioned thou is , once inside the FRUNK, you need 3-4 hand tools to even get to the battery. Tub, top cover hepa filter etc all have to be removed with nuts, bolts and plastic pins.. Then hopefully you can jump it. I don't typically have those tools with me . And yes I was stranded today with a bad 12 V battery on a 21 month old MYP
My 12v battery only lasted 13 months. Tesla wouldn't cover it. The cars now give a warning and I'm told you should deal with it asap.
Say if we use the 12v small battery to open the frunk , it won’t allow you to open the car doors right ? We need to open the top cover and then jump start the battery to get into the car, is that right ?
If you are getting jumped could you use the end of the jumper cables hooked to the other cars battery terminal to pop your frunk?
Yes. This this would work too.
stuck between model y performance and long range... thoughts?
Very clever!
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching!
If you are going to jump or replace the battery just use that same 12v source to pop the frunk.
Maybe your pet is trapped inside and it's 100F. Gotta be prepared.
I had the same thought, but I think the idea is that some people will want to store one of those portable booster packs in the frunk, so the small battery gives you access to it. I can see this making sense if you're travelling far off the beaten path.
You call Tesla Road Service too. Does anyone know how long the 12 volt battery will last - maybe it's 8 years like the Big battery??
I hope those that carry a full-size wheel and tire, also have a lug wrench and jack. Being 4 hours from a Tesla service center, how does that affect Tesla mobile service?
Mobile service is great. The guys come out of a town about 1.5 hours away. I've had great luck with mobile service. Thanks for watching!
