I got mine done 4 hours ago, honestly it’s fast. The procedure takes minutes. U just have to lay flat afterwards for a couple of hours just to be safe so u don’t get a headache. I’m currently laying flat at home resting 😊
Mine wasn't. The fluid has to drip. Can't be pulled out like they do with blood. You were blessed with it being quick. I did it because I fit the description of having guillain barre syndrome. And I did end up having it. Mine took a good 30 mins.

@@kathrynhill6452 same they had to take four full tubes for mine and had to reinsert 4 times and took 45 minutes

@@collinjohnson4462 Yikes, sounds similar to mine. About same time period but my doctor was a little less patient than yours sounds so he must’ve reinserted 10s of times
This is the stuff that makes men cry, wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy ,I'm currently in hospital and I just did this.
Stop lying, they give you local numbing injection so you wouldnt feel much if anything...
I had mine without any anaesthetics done and didnt feel any pain. It just depends on the skill of the surgeon or specialist.

@@KINGSOMALIA some people have much stronger reactions to lumbar punctures than others. I’ve had patients say it was completely painless, and some say it was extremely painful.

Just had mine done. Spent ages worrying about it from all these comments. Went in to it in a cold sweat. Didn't feel a thing and the doctor was very good at calming me down. The thing you have to remember is that it's only the people that have painful experiences that write these comments, the vast majority are absolutely painless. It's called publication bias. The people who it goes fine for rarely feel the need to comment on videos like this. I think about 10% of people have a hard time with it. One note, to avoid the headache you must lay flat for 4-6hours straight after the procedure, with your head flat too. Ive got a mild headache at the minute, but nothing unusual. It will be fine, don't worry!

I don't think people that say it's painful are saying it just to complain or scare people. It's just warning them that it can possibly hurt a bit. I've had 2 and neither were pain free but it isn't the most awful pain in the world. You also forgot to mention that there is pain after the procedure due to the anesthetic wearing off which is another reason why it's necessary to lay down. I would say that's worse than the test itself. Just because it was pain free for you and "the vast majority of people" doesn't mean it'll be that way for everyone and there's nothing wrong with warning people

My lumbar puncture was 197 days ago and i have no back pain anymore but the headaches are still so severe that it is impossible to drive a car or work with them. I think im just gonna jump in front of a train or something
I’ve done it 3 days ago don’t be afraid it’s not painful. After the procedure lay flat on the bed for an hour and your good to go

This experience was genuinely one of the most painful experiences AFTER the procedure was done. I never in my life felt pain in every single bone in my body like I did after a spinal tap

Dude yes. Can't believe I don't see more comments saying this. Literally had to sit in a wheelchair and even standing up from sitting was unbearable.

I just read the CNN article about the woman who needed multiple punctures and that led to a CSF leak that was easy to break. Her life has changed. Make sure you got a good doctor.
Hi everyone! I got mine 2 days ago, it was very fast as a procedure. You have to lay flat for at least 3 hours. I did not have any headache, just a bit of back pain. Everyone has different experiences, so just be positive you’ll have a good experience.
I have lumber punctures every 3 months because I’m on chemotherapy. I had them under local anesthetic at the start but it was so painful that I now have them under general. But if you are watching this because you are about to have one don’t worry the pain doesn’t last long

Me too, I had mine today and my back aches. I honestly always enter the procedure room anxiously and never get used to it, it’s as if the feeling feels different each time

I'm glad I watched this tonight because I have a lumbar puncture next Tuesday to find out what has caused my brain lesions with demyelination. I'm still quite anxious but now I know what's going to happen during the procedure, I just hope that my lumbar pain from osteoarthritis doesn't get worse afterwards .

I had my lumbar puncture under nhs. It is now day 3 and I still feel fine! Honestly don’t worry too much! The procedure wasn’t painful just a bit uncomfortable. I read 1000 horror stories and was terrified but it went so smoothly. I have some lower back pain and mild headaches but I’ve been taking panadol every 4-6 hours just to prevent any possible pain and I’ve been resting loads which is working amazingly. I don’t want to jinx anything but it wasn’t bad at all! I can’t thank the awesome doctor and nurse enough!

I have to have one every 3 months….
I had it done today and I got to admit it was fast and easy. I only felt a small poke. Everyone is different and I didn’t feel a headache either. So I feel it’s more being scared then the pain.
Done mine on local anesthesia, didn't hurt at all, no headaches, just a light back pain afterward. I guess everyone reacts to it differently!
Im a 26 year woman. I just got my very first Lumbar Punkture yesterday. I was honestly very scared. But it really wasnt that bad. You just feel a little prick and maybe some discomfort when the needle goes in, but its not painful. And if the doctor knows what he is doing, it should be very fast like around 15-20 minutes. The very important part is that you should lie on your back flat for at least 1-2 hours right after and drink ALOT of drinks with caffeine like Coca Cola and Coffee. That is to avoid getting the nasty headache you can get from spinal fluid leeking a bit. Best of Luck to anyone getting a Lumbar Punkture. Just remember that its a quick and not that painful procedure and the doctors know what they are doing.

I had lumbar punctures and had a lumbar drain and was traumatising and horrendous for me. Shooting pains like lightening bolts all around my womb, uterus and down my leg. I had to be knocked out in the end. I guess everyone is different but i wish it was so lovely as they make out in this video, blood spurted everywhere, i had high pressure csf.
I had mine done today, also dreaded it but honestly stubbing your toe is more painful. My doc could tell I was a little anxious and not only did he wonderfully execute the procedure but he congratulated me on how well I was doing after each needle :,) Very scary to think about however everyone is different! An experienced doc/nurse works absolute magic
Back when I had cancer at 12 I used to get a spinal tap constantly and then after a year; every 3 months. I refused to have general anaesthetic because it made me more poorly. They used to give me gas and air and I would get super high whilst they were setting me up (cleaning/getting me in position) and would carry on using it even after they said I could stop; until they took it away. I have fond memories of having lumbar punctures tbh
I'm at the ER & had this with a 30 minute warning AND IT WAS INSANE. I felt this through my entire body. Found out I have meningitis but I'm grateful they were able to do this & find it so quickly

I had this done, I’ve never experienced this amount of pain. Thankfully I’m put to sleep when I have it done now. Just wake up with a sore back.

They numbed it but you are still in pain I wouldnt want anyone else to have to go through this
When I had mine done I didnt feel a thing. But PLEASE ensure you rest after this is done. I made the mistake of going back to work the next day as I was only told to rest for the rest of THAT day only. Spinal headaches are a side effect as the puncture wound into the canal can take some time to heal and it can prevent the pressure from building up. For me it was like a very very bad migraine. Because I didnt rest I had to take a week off work.
I finally seen a doctor 6 days later and her advice was you should rest for 48hrs afterward. I wish I knew that earlier!

I had mine yesterday and i was so scared after reading these comments! To be honest i wasn’t that bad, the area was completely numb and the needle went in on the first try, i didnt even feel a thing.

I have had 2 of these. The first one was quick, but the 2nd one was not. I had the needle in my back about 45 minutes. It was painful at times but overall not too bad. I laid still for 3 hours after and didn’t have any side effects. Just a gnarly bruise and very sore back for a few days!
I performed several lumbar puncture more than 40 years ago, adult and pediatric. I considered myself as well my patients that no serious complications happened. There was about 2 or 3 "dry tap" which I and others found not possible to extract CS fluid. I was hoping that a special non-magnetic needle with MRI guidance is being used now, more precise and more predictable.
They do use a scan to be more precise with the needle either than that its still old school😢
Everyone is different of course, but this was agony for me. Even with local anesthesia. They had to knock me out.

Had a spinal tap done and then had a CSF leak from said spinal tap and had to get an epidural blood patch twice to fix the leak. This is uncommon but happened to me and caused migraines when I was seated or standing.
I had mine today and it was almost painless, almost didn't feel anything, get healthy you all!

@@sleepystars8482 no, 2013, i was 4. i was hospitalised for hallucinations and nothing was wrong. i was hospitalised for 4 days, thats all i remember. today i was looking through junk and found a box with my medical records and stuff. my mom and dad never told me ab the spinal tap so i didnt know even know for 7 years i had one. i couldve gone my whole life without knowing i had a spinal tap

I had this done in 2012 when we were trying to find an answer to something that happened out of the blue and it was pure agony even after having the local anaesthetic. After lying down in a certain position for a while I went to move and it was so painful I couldn't move and couldn't move for over an hour

Had mine yesterday to diagnose meningitis. When the needle hit the bit between the bones, it was like a really sharp ache. I had to grip the bed and stay as still as possible. It was definitely painful and I couldn’t wait for it to be over, but it was bearable.

My daughter had a spinal tap to check for bacterial meningitis and her pain was so well managed before, during, and afterwards she had no problems at all besides being a little sore but Tylenol worked fine.

Oh I know how that fills I had one a few years back and still having problem a lots of pressure and some time burning filling
I did this for stem cell injections. No anesthesia at all. Straight injection with fine needle. Wasn’t too bad at all and no headache.
Someone had it 11 days ago and after this , he is suffering from headache ( sitting or walking , he is feeling this pain) still he has this headache… now the hospital will go farther with medicines , back mrt ….. he was really in pain in these few days … i hope he gets well soon …. Pray 🙏🏼
I had an illness that was never diagnosed that and initially I was in so much pain that after the numbing stuff I was doing ok then the Doc went up to a point that was not numbed and let me tell you that is the worst pain I’ve ever had and I honestly think I have ptsd because of this and they had to do this 4 times back to back and I screamed such a blood curdling scream that I understood (I was in a children’s hospital) why these kids were screaming. Also I passed out for 3 hours and woke up at midnight and became extremely sick and was in and out of the ER for several days and could not walk because of the pain. And for those who’ve read to the end I thank you and apologize for being long winded. So here is an emoji and just because I had an extremely bad experience doesn’t mean you will 😑
I also had a lumbar puncture 6 days ago without numbing and it felt as if someone stabbed me with a knife in my back. The back pain is so crippling, i can hardly walk without pain. I am 20 years old and was very athletic before, i did running, worked out in the gym and now i cannot do that anymore. The lumbar puncture absolutely destroyed my body. I hope i can recover from that
rain bow bro same but as long as you lay down for awhile it will heal on it’s own worst case scenario they will do a blood patch I didn’t have one done because I was in the ER for 3 days and didn’t want to go back avoid Motrin it will make your stomach upset and you’ll be violently sick

Jaja the pain is now gone but such a procedure will create a long lasting trauma. So very bad for psychological health
Jaja like after all of it you dont like to be touched with a sharp object in the back the physical pain should only last like a couple weeks at most and the key is to lay down for a while and it will slowly heal
Just got mine done at Johns Hopkins at 2pm today, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected, didn’t hurt a bit, I hope they find what they need to help me… a few weeks ago I was found unresponsive in my sleep abs foaming at the mouth (no, I do not do drugs and i do not drink excessively); now that I’m aware I’ve lost a great deal of my memory, at this point I cannot be left home alone because I easily get confused and panicked. This is the STRANGEST, most TERRIFYING thing to happen to me

@@themusiclover8440 there was ZERO pain or discomfort .. it took all of 10 mins or so, if that long. The nurse spread a little numbing cream (unnecessary) and walked me through the procedure, then she did it. I didn’t even feel the needle! It really was quick like a bunny… I am 100% you’ll be just perfect!! Let me know how everything goes, I LOVE YOU💕💕

Getting my spinal tap this week. Dr ordered me valium to take around 20 mins before hand for anxiety.
Never again. Had this done nearly a week ago, still in pain. My back feels so weird, horrible pains over my body.. I was in the fetal position for 1.5 - 2 hours having this done. Was awful. My brother said his was reslly quick mine was beyond!! Weird how people take it ok or feel pretty traumatised.. make sure youve got a gooden doing it!!

Okay, just done my lumbar puncture for the first time ever in my life (20y old female) after reading all the comments 20 minutes before my procedure I was freaking out but it’s been 5 minutes after my procedure and I feel perfectly fine obviously it felt a bit weird having a strange object inside my spine but tbf I didn’t feel any pain just more discomfort. Hopefully I feel well enough to go to my 2-8 shift today, I’ll come back for an update in about a week

@@georgiak3606biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my life it’s been a week and I feel like dying. After my procedure last week Sunday I felt fine up until Tuesday early this week. Constant excruciating headache that does not go away along with feeling nauseous and throwing up every 2 hours to the point I had to double check I’m not pregnant cause I got paranoid. Bare in mind I’m a healthy 20 year old that barely gets sick or visit the hospital so I was confident I was going to feel better within 3 days or so but right now I’m unable to do anything I haven’t even been able to go to the gym either I just feel like shit I’m always throwing up every two seconds the headaches feel like it’s getting worse day by day if I could turn back time I would have listened to my mum when she advised me not to get the procedure done. Goodluck with yours cause it’s going to be a tough journey I’m not sure when I will be back to normal oh! my lower back stopped hurting fairly quickly I only feel tender there.
Update. I’m feeling much better now pretty much back to my old self. No more headaches or nausea but my back is still tender. Remember to drink as much as possible at least 2 litres/3 litres a day. I naturally drink a lot so that wasn’t a problem for me

I had my first LP three days ago. It took me 30 minutes and being successful for one trial only.
Howerver, my headache still is annoying me when I sit up or stand up. It is really painful!!!

I had one yesterday, they couldn't get the fluid to drain so had to re-ajust the angle of the needle, the needle hit nerves which was like an electric shock going down my legs and had to be restrained
I wasn’t so lucky on this. I was slightly sedated for it. The actual procedure was fine. Felt the needle go in just a bit but not to bad. It’s was after that was a nightmare. I lied down at home for several hours. But the head pain was killing me. Felt like my head was going to explode. Nothing was helping. I was lying down for days because as soon as I lifted my head I felt so much pain and sickness. After a week I went to the hospital. Luckily the doctor who did it was there. I ended up having a blood patch done. Where they take blood from you an inject it near the spinal tap spot. I was dealing with a leak, that many can get after the procedure. The head pain was the worse pain I ever experienced. I wouldn’t recommend this done unless your health conditions were extremely bad and you definitely need answers. If you experience extreme head pain for more than 2-3 days tell them to do the blood patch. I started feeling 50% better after 4 hours and each hour was getting better after that. Good Luck everyone.

I had this done a couple of days ago due to cluster headache and had to have this done to test for bleeding in the brain and menigitus . I been getting head pain today real bad . Im going see how i get on the next couple of days as if i still got bad headaches ill go back like u done

I got mine done while asleep. And honestly the moment I woke up from the sedative, I felt absolutely horrible. And my nurse made me take my meds while nauseas. But honestly I'd do it again even though I could really eat anything after cause of the nausea and dizziness
Please dont listen to people here who are trying to scare you. While back in the 90s when i had it done (they didnt use any numbing prior to the procedure which hurt like hell) it was incredibly painful, nowadays you shouldnt feel anything more than an uncomfortable feeling in your lower back which is VERY annoying but pain wise isnt bad.
Worst thing that ever happened to me. It wasn't painful but it was disgusting to feel the needle touch my nerves and send electric shocks down my legs. Then the day after I had such bad back pain that I literally couldn't stand straight. The next day came the worst headache I ever had. Now it's been 4 days since the puncture and I still have some pain in the head and back. Wow never again

I just had a lumbar puncture today and it wasn't that bad, I was kind of worried about it but it really wasn't a big deal at all. No headache yet, and I don't anticipate one if I continue to lay here for a day or two
I just had mine to measure cerebral fluid pressures then extract to reduce the pressures which were causing me to have migraines. Previous attempts took Drs 4-7 goes to pierce the right part of the sub-dural space and usually still not being successful because I must have a strange spinal cavity. I always demand a CT guided LP nowadays so they get it right first pop - excuse the pun!

The actual procedure was nothing for me but fast forward 4 days & i have the absolute worse headaches & nausea of my life whenever I sit up or stand up. I actually vomited yesterday after just walking for 5-10 minutes my head was POUNDING and I felt like I was going to pass out. Worst headache of my life & when EMTs got there they were being very condescending. Welcome to phoenix Az they probably just thought I was another drug addict when I was really just suffering worst than ever before. I really lost all hope in humanity after this experience. There was 0 sympathy shown to me.

it’s not too bad, my doctor numbed it pretty well and it was pretty easy to go through. all you feel is a little bit of a deep bee sting and then it’s done, takes about 5-6 mins

I still hate needles with a passion and when I say that to the doctor they always say but you have all those tattoos tattoo needles and regular needles are way to different things

I got a spinal tap when i was 10 years old guys. It felt like a hammer pounding on your spinal cord. If I did it at 10 you guys can do it don’t worry!!
They did it to me at that age as well.they didn’t give me any anesthetics it was the worst thing I’ve ever felt lol. Tested me for Lyme disease I think it was. Had all sorts of tests done to me that day
Make absolutely sure that you lay flat on your back for at least one hour after having an LP. Drink plenty of water. If you don't lie flat on your back for at least one hour, you're going to have the most awful headache that you've ever had in your entire life for days. Vomiting and nausea will occur because of the intense headaches. My headache's lasted for at least 3 days. They were so bad that I had to go back to the emergency room for medication. The headache was so bad that even after I got and IV injection of morphine, it still did not help. After an hour they gave me Dilaudid and phenergan and that didn't help. Even zofran for nausea did not help. Finally, the doctor gave me some old-school medicine. I got a big shot of thorazine and that actually did help with the nausea and vomiting but the headaches were still there. Finally, they just had to put me on a Versed drip and keep me out for a whole day. I just cannot stress how important it is to lie flat on your back after having an LP done.
I just did this an they sad I need to lay on my back for a minimum of 6 hours, why didn't your doctors advise you on this its vital information.

Got mine 4 days ago, wasn't that bad. Its just a weird feeling. The pain in my case is right now, I've had the most terrible headaches, i can barely stand up 😔 i hope this ends soon 🙏

I ended up at the A&E (London) with balance disturbances after having chickenpox (2 days after the scabs dried - I'll add that I had a very mild case of chickenpox).Problems with walking and balance started. They did blood tests, a CT scan, an MRI, EMG, and a lumbar puncture. (I'm not sure how much fluid they took exactly, but I think around 30 milliliters as recommended).I lay down for 1.5 hours after the lumbar puncture, and they sent me home. An hour later, I started vomiting. For the next 3 days, I could barely walk and kept vomiting, so I returned to the A&E. I'm not vomiting anymore, but I have a balance problem; my movements aren't "fluid." I'm exhausted by this.What should I do? Will it go away? I'll add that my mom had multiple sclerosis, and I told the doctor about it, but they ruled out all neurological causes after all the tests came back okay.
I had one while AWAKE for Menehinits and now, ten years later, at 30 years old, my BACK is STILL NOT right! I have pain all the time. And ppl don’t believe me...what do I do?!!?!
Have you gone to a doctor to have it checked out? What have you tried for the pain? Have you tried full-spectrum CBD or Delta-8? Those are life savers for nerve pain but I'm not sure if that's the cause of your pain. If the pain shoots down your leg, then it's nerve related. If it's isolated to one area, then you might have experienced spinal cord trauma.

My 8 yr old had one completed 2 days ago..they said it was painless and to take some panadol if pain occurs. . however the backpain and headaches to follow is unbearable
Just did it today and i have a pretty good pain tolerance. And they couldn’t do it so have to try again later. But ended up throwing up from the pain
I had lumber puncture done cause I was diagnosed with brain tb, it's not painful but it's the most scary thing to face. But after that I just rested till the evening in the hospital n came bck home. Headache s were already there due to tb apart from that there was no side effect. But I cried like a baby after the procedure and wd never wanna do it again!
Just had one done today. Doctor couldn’t find a great source for fluid so he was poking and prodding different areas for an HOUR straight; this needle going in and out and in and out. Feels like I had back surgery.
Took 2 hours to do mine and three separate attempts. First a less experienced junior doctor tried and couldn't which annoyed me. I was close to fainting no idea why I don't usually have that issue. Anyway tried laying down and the more experienced doctor couldn't do it, they got me to watch Modern Family on my phone while trying to collect it. No luck. Finally got sat up and they managed to get it on the third go! Then I had a blood test and they couldn't get blood out of me but managed to on the 7th attempt!!! Felt like a heroin addict with the amount of punctures that day (yesterday). Headache and tenderness in back, but it was fine. Caffeine was recommended so coffee or energy drink and paracetamol. Good luck guys, this is probably worst case scenario I got told it usually takes 20mins and not 2 hours like mine!

I just got my first lumber puncture two days ago and I'm in absolute agony. It was done while I laid on my stomach and I am calling my hospital once they open today. The Nausea is brutal and stairs are evil. I rest my case.

I'm 28 and got mine as a kid while I was laying on my side. Afterward it was hell. The seat belt buckle barely touched my back and I screamed. I couldn't walk or stand normally for a few days it was bad.
Omg I have mine scheduled on the 25th and that will be my 3rd time🫢,one from my C-section,2nd from my car accident,and now to determine if I have MS.

I spent the whole 30 minutes crying and whining because of the pain while the nurses were comforting me, and had to lay down for 24h afterwards
It was one of the most painful things I've ever experienced in my life, and the neurologist told my parents before entering my room that I needed to be brave because of the pain I was going to endure

really? mine was okay tho, i remember when I was 9 years old, I was diagnosed viral infection of the brain and they did this to me alone inside my hospital room while my parents are outside and crying. and me laying flat there and I didn't feel any pain. My doctor said I was brave enough 😄
@@animeichii8031 Mine is same . My mom is outside. I am scared but I achieved still good. My doctor said you are very good . After the procedure I don't feel very pain . I feel just little pain in my back .
If the procedure is simple as highlighted. Why is it that in other countries patients die hours after the procedure?
I had a lumbar puncture today. They had to do it 3 times, it didn’t hurt much and also here in the Netherlands they don’t numb it.

Got mine done last week was not wearing your gown. I didn't see the point I was wearing. My work closed. Someone had my shirt off and it hurt like hell. Might use having a needle jammed into my spine. I went home early. I didn't feel the thing. They're gonna tell me that I'm not gonna feel well and I might be dizzy. I'm a lot stronger than that. So I wasn't just p***** off. I had to lay there without my family and my friends. For support which I didn't get. Five friggin hours in hospital. I didn't get my results back yet. So I don't know what the deal is
I had one as an infant. Mixed up paper work... Hopefully standards have improved these last 38 years.
Im going to have this procedure soon and im really nervous but honestly i think its the thought of having a needle in my spine that freaks me out more than the fact that it could be painful or uncomfortable 😭

I got today hhhhhmm was not really that makes my face happy 😁🤣,but thanks to God I did it up to the end, the doctor was very good she was trying to asked me some questions to makes me feel comfortable kkk , I wasn't replying her I was just sounding strange because Iwas scared🤪, but anyway is the way it is, I am also happy that I found out that everything is very fine in my brain, thanks to God and Doctors in Germany Hamburg
I’m in Australia 🇦🇺 I had mine done 4 days ago I’m still receiving headaches and horrible lower back pain. Can’t stand for too long. I had two kids naturally and I would rather do that all over again than have this done. Worst pain ever!

Same! after watching season 3 I got so intrigued about this substance that I never paid attention to. The more I think about it, the more sense it makes that magical powers of transforming into a titan is carried by spinal fluid 😌 Because it's directly correlated with the brain and the spine is a titan's weak spot.
I also believe this because the creator has a strong tendency to make fictional subjects relate to our real-world science. My favorite example of this is the colossal titan having no skin, because it's so massive it produces far too much heat than skin could withstand. The creator of AoT is truly talented and I aspire to be like him
