The Chelsea team of 2004-5-6 was simply scary. Big personalities, physically strong, tactically smart and very very efficient winning machine. Those were the days.

  • @Bossman525

Gotta love Joe Cole, decent guy with no ego. That Chelsea team of the mid 00s was just a winning machine. They were so powerful and mentally strong it was scary. Mourinho of that era was special, he demanded so much more from his players and it showed in the games that they played.
That along with Rafa Benitez defined that time frame in football.
The game has moved on from the mid/late 00s, players are no longer the same I'd say more "snowflakey" and I assent to add more social media driven.
But what great time to enjoy the game back in the mid to late 00s.

@@Bossman525 Definitely my man, football has changed so much, most teams now are all full of small midfielders, small wide men, small forwards.
Each to their own and what not but I always like watching teams that have the power to bully teams and play with flair, like I said that Chelsea team with the likes of Drogba, Lampard, Essien, Terry, Cech etc.. Arsenal with Campbell, Lehman, Gilberto, Viera.. United with Vidic, Ferdinand, Rooney, Keane etc...
Also inter Milan when Jose, that team was insane man they had everything, Power with Lucio, Zanetti, Cesar, Maicon, Samuel, Cambiasso, Motta, but then had awesome players like Milito, Eto, Sjneider even Balotelli.

Frank Rijkaards Barca was more dominant in terms of play as apposed to the more tiki taka Peps Barca. I preferred the more powerful Barca team of Frank Rijkaard's then the later version of the more delicate football of peps.

Joe Cole was at his peak during 2005-06 season. He was the best player of England at 2006 World Cup. After that he suffered two back to back injuries and missed the most of 2006-07 season. He never gained his top form after that, just a spark in 2007-08 season and after that he just faded away at the age of 27, what a shame.

In a sense, Mourinho was right. Joe Cole had like 2 GREAT years but never he was considered the best in the world, whilst Frank Lampard... he trully was one of the greatest ever to play in that position. Still Mou had the knowledge to educate and praise Joe Cole for what he did but he trully could have been so much more.
But then again we (the general public) are unaware of so many things that these glimpses of interactions of players and coaches are so interesting.
I would love to be a manager at that level, or at least have the opportunity of witness a full season under a Football Manager that coaches any top flight team.

This is the different about Mou managed team at 2000 up and 2014 up.. the way now is different not like the old time..
I think if Jose given the all he need at the club like chelsea in 2004/2005 , intermilan or even porto.. he can give another champions again. Iam a chelsea fan and still now hope he manage chelsea one day if Sarri leave.. He and Ten Hag ..

I think maybe the comments on unfulfilled potential are more to do with Joe seeming like a top bloke and was obviously an exciting player, certainly in English terms, so it would have just been nice for him to be mentioned alongside players like Lampard and Gerrard. His trophy haul is in reality really impressive but I feel like if it was with a different club he would have stood out more as Mourinho has never really valued players like Cole as much as other managers do.

I'm one of those who thinks Joe didn't reach his potential. I understand why he went to Chelsea, and yes he did win alot there, but, he was not any part of the reason they won so much. They'd have won it without him. He was never really trusted in the middle at Chelsea, particularly by Jose who preferred bigger lads. So he was stuck out wide for so long there. He was never trusted to be free. Jose even threatened to sell him if he did one more backheal. That era of lampard, Gerrard and scholes debate should have included joe. He was every bit as good as them, maybe even more so. Could have been gazza Standard, i really believe that. But he's overlooked as a great. Because he was never allowed to shine as a central player. Still a great career, but should have been so much better for me.
