🥂 By now, we all know how important a role our managers play in our professional development. So in this video, I share 6 Tips for Productive 1:1 Meetings with Your Manager that you can apply immediately in your next one on one with your boss!
If you think about it, it's in both you and your manager's best interests to have effective 1 on 1 meetings, since constructive 1:1s throughout the year makes performance reviews a breeze. With routine 1:1s, review time can be more about goals and the year ahead instead of constructive feedback from the past 🙌
The problem is that most of us (I fell victim to this as well) take a rather passive approach to 1:1 meetings. Case in point: If you run a quick Google search, you'll find a LOT of resources teaching managers how to conduct 1:1's with us, but very few resources teaching us how to manage up effectively!
To make the most out of your next one on one meeting with the boss, you want to prepare an agenda beforehand, have a robust structure during the 1:1 meeting, and follow up afterwards.
Let me know how your next 1:1 meeting goes 😉

Great value content and delivery, dinky graphics, thank you 🙏 Jeff Su 🙏Yes, please, would love a video on the professional development. Wishing you all the best.

Jeff is like a close friend whom you go to for all kinds of workplace questions. 😀 You can count on him to give you some of the most useful tips for almost any situation you can think of.
Hahahaha some of my friends actually do come to me with these questions and I'm just like "what about some personal questions as well...." 😂

*1000% yes to the professional development track, please!* Things have gone busier now that we've downsized our Marketing team, so there hasn't been a lot of growth happening. Would love the insight!
Got it Erika! Will note it down 😁
@@JeffSu Hey Jeff is this one out yet if not maybe next video idea ?

Jeff, I'm starting my first full-time professional job very soon and I feel like your videos are allowing me to download so much info about how to succeed in the workplace. I studied more technical and theoretical material, so these videos are giving me a ton of ideas about how to wrangle relationships as effectively as I can wrangle data.
Awesome! Let me know how they work out in practice 😁
Love the spreadsheet tip Jeff! So much more effective to see everything at a glance rather than have every meeting on separate notes. Where have you been all my life??? Need more professional development videos please!! 😀
Will do Billie! And let me know if you have any specific topics in mind 😁
Jeff - great video! Do you mind sharing the Google sheet Template?
As a first-generation American, the first one to attend college, work in corporate America, and be financially stable in my family, I deeply appreciate this video. You're my only source for this type of advice. Thank you so much!!
First of all, congrats! What a journey it must have been for you (and your family) Isaac! Glad to hear you enjoy these videos as well 😁
I’m so lucky to have a great relationship with my direct manager. It’s hard to find that nowadays
I think there's a saying that goes something like "a great manager can make any bad job good, and a bad manager can make any great role bad" or something, and it's so true!
@@JeffSu There is also "People don't leave companies, people leave their managers."
@@itachicz2 yes, definitely!!!
@@JeffSu Also great content man. Your content is well though out and produced.
@@itachicz2 thank you Jakub 😁
I'm not working just a fresher, but by this I learned something useful and now I feels like I'm a step ahead than others and use this while I was in those situation. Thanks Jeff brother for making this.
You definitely are a couple of steps ahead Rajesh! And don't forget to come back when you get that internship 😉
Jeff your videos are always full of quality content. I always walk away with a gem that I can apply to my professional life. Great work as always 👍
Very happy to hear that Reinaldo! Happy you're able to apply some of the concepts in real life 😁😁
Hey Jeff, thank you for all of your videos and input. I love the way you present and more importantly the input and added value you give. I get a lot of out of your videos! Thanks for doing this!
Happy to hear that Halit 😁😁, thank you
I literally watch your videos to hype me up before I have to be a big boy manager and you help me remember that I know what I’m doing. I love your work ❤
Hahahaha glad to hear it! 😁
I've rewatched this a couple of times and always find it refreshing! Would love a video on 1:1 specifically for professional development!
Thanks Louis! Ah yes...I need to get to that video...
The content was solid. I like the rose, thorn and bud method. I also like the Google sheet structure for developmental convos. I would love to content on how to contribute in meetings when you aren't well verse in the topics. How to influence better within the org and across your org.
Thanks for the input Corey! And those are great ideas 😁! I do have some thoughts around those and will add them to the content pipeline
This is amazing Jeff, especially for someone like me, who doesn't work with their managers on day-to-day's. I am about to set up a more frequent 1-on-1 cadence with my manager and facilitate the meetings following your tips!
Nice Alfred! Let me know how it goes 😁😁
Here again to quickly get some inspirations before my 1:1 with the new manager soon 😬 you have no idea how your videos help your viewers to learn and grow. TYSM Jeff!!
Professional 1:1 video please when you have time for that? 🤩
This was so useful, I would love to see more videos like this! One thing I struggle the most is ‘managing up’ you’ve mentioned. And since my 1:1 is only once every six weeks, I’m really trying to get the most out of it 😄
Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear you found this useful! And wow every 6 weeks, I'd definitely make the most out of those 1:1's for sure! I'd recommend you send pre-reads prior to each one to be honest, if the gap is that long
Enjoyed your video!! On point with everything you said!! I appreciate that you jump straight to the point and identify key things on the spot!
That's because I value my viewers' time 😁
A little late here but once again thanks Jeff, I really enjoyed the video! I am in the latter stage of my career (final third), but still find that Jeff does an amazing job of providing the perfect amount of relevant content in a simple, relatable format that has the perfect mix of data and examples to easily apply to real life scenarios for people at all career stages, not to mention his great sense of humor and crisp organized style. Thank you Jeff! I try to watch your videos as often as possible and actually apply your suggestions to my life for better more fulfilling performance and efficiency. I'm sure it is not easy to balance a full time job, keep your videos going, and oh maybe have some part of a fulfilling personal life 😀 but on behalf of all of the people out there who value and respect your work, THANK YOU! I always look forward to watching your videos and do so of a morning when my life is at it's quietest so I can fully absorb the content, take notes and develop courses of action for application to my life.
As for the Professional Development comment, YES most definitely I too like the others would love too see a video of yours on that and maybe your suggestions of how to plan, facilitate, and follow-up on those awkward annual meetings like that, which we all have. Other items to consider in a video of that sort might be 1) "how to handle constructive criticism from your manager", turning the negative into a positive re-course of action or b) how to score well on an annual performance review c) how to effectively use the corporate structured performance review process to our advantage throughout the year versus checking the box at the end of the year, etc.
A couple of other topics of interest for video suggestions I wondered about is:
1) How to excel in the corporate world as a Consultant/Contingent worker. Realizing this differs across companies based on the vision, goals, and policies but I bet you could do your magic and come up with a concise and entertaining clip on the topic. It's a very important subject matter in the corporate workplace today for people at every career stage and if managed effectively could be quite advantageous to everyone involved on either side (consultant/employee), rather than the "us vs. them" mentality that is so often followed and most big shops around the world.
2) So you got the job! video 🙂 I think that rarely do people stay in 1 job for their entire career anymore. I don't know the stats but I believe I've heard average corporate tenure is 3-5 years. Take that # X the # of working people in the global corporate world and that is a large number of people that often change jobs starting over again and again to apply this information. With that and as a part of that population, we could all use a little Jeff Su magic on how to make the best off it and succeed above the rest (well, the rest of the people who don't know about or watch your videos). I envisioned a 1, 3, 6, 9, 12 month + plan of simple steps or guidelines to suggest for success at each milestone, items to focus on for continued success, things to avoid altogether, and how to exceed leadership's expectations in a rapidly changing world. Or something like that. lol
Thank you again Jeff for everything you do. Even though you are amazing at what you do, I'm sure you have days that you question the reward over the amount of work and cost to keep this all going just for the benefit of the fans. Profit aside, you surely must have days where you want to keep your secrets of success to yourself and let the rest of the world figure it out to enjoy more free time for yourself. But on behalf of your fan population a huge thank you is in store and kudos to you for doing what you do. You have no idea the benefit you provide to those of us who look forward to and rely on your work. You are a natural born leader and in addition to improving the lives of your fan base with this content, you will hopefully one day be rewarded for all of the hard work and dedication of blood, sweat, and tears that you've endured over the years to make this happen.
Wishing you much success Jeff in everything you do! You deserve it all but most importantly hopefully you will receive more than the expected reward on returns. Apologies for the email length.
Wow thanks so much for your kind words 😁
Love your content so much Jeff! You always make it fun and concise! Thanks :D
Thank you Hazel!! Glad you found this short and to the point, you're very welcome 😁😁
Though I'm a college student but I still think this will be something extremely important that I'll need in the future, Thanks Jeff for covering this up !!

Another amazing video. Keep going mate!
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge for free.
I'm glad you all find this knowledge worth watching!! 😁 Thanks Luís!
Grateful I found your channel! So many learnings packed in each video. 👌
I'm grateful you found my channel too Solbi! Glad to hear it 😁
Not directly applicable to my situation right now, but I still enjoyed watching! It's great how you always include some little nuggets that apply to any context, e.g., adding relevant attachments to calendar events. I've started doing this (in MS Outlook) and find it saves me quite a bit of time. Extra productivity tip, y'all: if you want to count to six using just one hand, thus saving the other one for multitasking, the Chinese hand gesture system for numbers has got you covered at 0:53. Nope, that was not an extremely laid back rock 'n' roll salute ;)
Thank you for watching the video even if it's not directly applicable to you right now Adriana, I really appreciate it!! And thank you for noticing 😁😁
Thanks for the content, Jeff! It really helped me with my team! Wish you all the best!!!
Thank you so much Léo! You too 😁

I'm a college student, but I'm definitely using your tips about Rose-Bud-Thorn (oops: Rose-Thorn-Bud😂) and adding the Google sheet to the Google event for recurring meetings. I like how you addressed the "political" significance of having a good 1:1 in the beginning - I would've never thought about it like "managing up". Absolute banger as always, Jeff :D
That's awesome to hear Leia! Yes the Rose Thorn Bud structure can apply to a variety of situations if you think about it, thanks for the input!! 😁😁
Hi Jeff again. Just to tell you that I've been relying on your videos to survive through my very first days at a big corporation. The content is perfectly useful and usable.
Thank you so much 🌱🌱🤩🤩
Woohooo congrats on getting through your first week / month. Have fun!!
Thank you Jeff!! Super helpful~ looking forward to the professional development part!~
Thanks for the feedback! I"m looking forward to it as well 😁
Love this video! Just a personal opinion - for some people it might be helpful to add a "Preparation" or "Pre Work" column before the Agenda column to note down what to prep or do before the meeting! For example, send out pre-read, read the product introduction, etc. And therefore the logic of the columns (pre work, agenda, action items) actually follows your before (though slightly different by definition), during, after meeting framework :) but understand that it could be noted separately in other to-do lists as well!
That's an amazing tip Sharon, thanks for sharing!!
Quality = Infinity/10. Love your content brother!
Thank you my friend!! Glad you found this helpful 😁😁
