This is my first video in my series on Getting Hired. I will be exploring all the common job interview questions, including "tell me about yourself" - the most common job interview question - usually used as the icebreaker at the beginning of every job interview. There is a big difference between what you learn in business school, and what you need to know in the real world - just ask any startup founder or business owner! My goal is to focus on the real-world aspects of business, giving practical tips and tricks that are not usually covered in school.
This channel is a platform to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed. It is also to help the world at large to be more effective and successful. The world can certainly use more inspiring leaders, more successful entrepreneurs, and more capable managers - that is what I would like to help bring about.
Who Am I?
I am a practicing management consultant, former CEO, and entrepreneur. I have led many businesses to success, as well as several startups. Among other things, I have a master's degree in finance.
I have worked across five industries, and have worked in both large enterprise and small businesses. In the last five years, I have also been mentoring startup founders and teaching business at a post-graduate level.

I was interviewed when I applied for the Illinois State Police, back in ‘84, by the district commander, a lieutenant, and the senior master sergeant, who sat behind me where I could not see him. It was a very long interview, technically an interrogation, since they asked many probing questions about my personal life. The final thing asked was “Where do you see yourself in twenty years?”, by the district commander; I told him that I intended to be in his job by then. An idiotic thing to say. I found out later that that answer was the single thing that decided the interview, because though the district commander didn’t like the answer, the lieutenant, and the master sergeant, who was silent the entire time, convinced the district commander that if I had the guts to be that honest, they needed to approve me. As it turned out, many years later I retired from that same district as the senior master sergeant.
I would think that would be the perfect answer. If I were that high up in the chain, I'd be looking for the person that's going to be my replacement. At some point I'd want to retire, and I would want to know the district is going to be in good hands. I wouldn't want to hire people that are just OK with stagnating and staying at the same low to middle level their entire career. It may be OK for some hires, but you also need the go-getters that want to step up and take more responsibility as time goes on.
I wanted to transfer to a different unit in the military. Normally it’s simply a case of whether there is an open spot with your job title but I had made a mistake recently that the new commander had heard about. They requested an interview and when asked about the mistake and why they should choose me, I told them because I had grounded the aircraft myself over a very minor mistake that no one would have ever known about that all of my peers would have ignored. I told them my greatest strength was my integrity. They agreed and signed my transfer on the spot.
What they were looking for was the subtext of I'll follow any order from above and rationalise it as "doing my job" or "just following orders" irrespective of the legality, constitution or morality. By answering "in his job" you signalled that you'd do whatever is asked of you so as to rise through the ranks, which is how he got there himself.

I wouldn’t work for a guy that insecure in his position. The worst thing about most interviews is the interviewer.

Watched this vid 30 minutes before phone interview. Was the first question. Had my resume printed out, so easy to follow along. Kept it under a minute. NAILED the interview!

I lost my job and watched this video i was making only 40k but after watching this video it helped me land 3 offers one 70k and another for 80k and another 55k thank you some much i was feeling depressed getting rejected but now very happy.

Last year I was interviewed for a managerial job at Dick's Sporting goods, I used this technique with the hiring manager. It was painfully obvious that the hiring manager hadn't read my resume or cover letter at all. On top of that he was fifteen minutes late for the interview. I started off using this technique but ended up explaining my entire history to him and by the end of the interview I realized I was radically over qualified for the job. I was invited back for another interview but I felt like the management wasn't organized nor did they take their potential employees time seriously. Oddly the hiring manager being so poorly organized he saved me by making me realize I would never want to work for that company, ever.

i've only been to a dick's a few times (even though my mom actually said "that's the biggest dick's i've ever seen".... true story) anywho, half of their products have no price on them, and the other half are priced incorrectly... i'm surprised the are still in business much less managed to open more than one store...
@@mmm-mmm had a very bad experience with them. I ordered $7k worth of Yeti cups. Asked them specifically to make sure they were well packed prior to shipped. Dick’s CS assured me they would make sure they were packaged appropriately before shipping. What did they do? Threw my Yeti’s in boxes with NO shipping materials. Of course they all arrived damaged. Dicks truly lived up to their name as I attempted the return process. I had to threaten a law suit.
"Tell me about yourself" - Just recap your resume in 45 seconds. This is really good advise and is simple and easy to understand.
to some they dont suggest to tell them what's already on the resume, but say something about yourself out of the box that one way or another connects with the job your applying for.

@@teenamarie1527 Yes, I think that is an excellent idea. I don't see the point in just rehashing what's already on the resume.
The problem with conducting interviews is that you end up hiring someone who is good at interviews, as opposed to someone who is actually good at the given job. Interviews are actually counterproductive to the given goal and will result in HORRIBLE hires. Instead you should give them a task related to the job they will be doing and see how they perform.
💯 you are correct. I have thought of this also. Interviews don’t really show what you will be as an employee
I prefer an employer ask me to show previous work that I've done that would relate to the current position. For me, I have ZERO interest in putting in work for someone who has not hired me. If you want me to complete a task for you, pay me for it.
Because bottom line is, you might have two candidates who both complete that task for your masterfully. And then you have to choose only one candidate. For me to do amazing work for you, ultimately to not get hired for reasons I will never find out, is of no interest to me. It's a huge waste of my time.
If you just ask the standard boilerplate interview questions, then yes. Using a targeted selection interview process forces even the best interview to think on his/her feet. It helps with the "show me" part of whether this candidate can do the job.
@@Mark-wd5zb That's not what I'm talking about. I don't mean working for them for free. I mean something simple that only takes a few minutes. Fore example. When I interviewed for a sales job the manager asked me to sell him a pen. Two minutes later he couldn't hire me fast enough. Or lets say I'm hiring an artist. I might ask him to draw me a cartoon Pig. That only takes a minute or two but tells me everything I need to know. I don't care if he is good at answering questions. That's not what the job is. I only care if he can draw. No matter how many questions I ask him, that won't tell me if he can draw. But most people would interview the artist and ask him a lot of questions and then hire the person that answers the questions the best. That makes not sense and you end up with employees that can't do the work.
Will you pay me for my time? If not, go pound sand. You're not worthy of my valuable contribution to help make your "business" more profitable.
This was helpful when I was preparing for an interview in June this year. I went in confident during the interview. Lo and behold this was the FIRST QUESTION and I answered it well. It absolutely helped me. I GOT THE JOB!

I'm not interviewing but this guy is articulate, energetic, and interesting.
I once flew from San Jose to NYC for an interview only to discover that the interviewer hadn’t read my resume. Worse, he berated me for not meeting the requirements he hadn’t bothered to list in the ad. At least he did reimburse me for the plane ticket and hotel. What a jerk. I ran into him several times afterwards at trade shows and just ignored him.

One said that he doesn't like university I graduated from in Uzbekistan, other two guys (in two different cases) just said that I gave them wrong answer to a tech question (I am sure that I gave them the right one), many times I was asked about my age, which is illegal of course, but I didn't know how to react, several times I was denied on the ground of being "over-skilled".

As someone with admittedly poor people skills, these videos really help a lot to understand what the interviewer is looking for. It's all great getting hundreds of interviews lined up based on my resume, but it hurts, it sucks when you leave the interview with a another sting of dissapointment, knowing you just messed that one up again

Yep. A safer assumption is that their computer keyword search algorithm kicked out your resume which was later emailed to the interviewer along with "we need you to interview this candidate right now".
i watch your video just to teach my daughter. i pointed out that whenever there's a school project need to be present, she need to use the 1 minute timer (yours is 45 second) and used simple sentence with sharp content to do the presentation. now, she's the favorite student among her friends to present their school project. thanks to you Sir 🙏🏻

You can definitely see by your presentation that you teach this on the postgraduate level the way you recap what you've covered at the end is extremely valuable and definitely acknowledges that we're only retaining 20%of what we hear and 10% what we read, yet 50% of what we see and hear. As someone with Asperger's, it's really difficult to understand the grey area, even with questions that SOUND simple enough to answer. Employers these days need to drop this concept and start thinking about meeting the IQ level of the jobseeker in order to hire their skills. Things need to be black and white, no hidden meanings, first time, every time to eliminate the waste of time with confusion.

I like the sports team analogy. Consider this, I was interviewed for a special education position. I was asked about my administrative license and if I would do that. I mentioned that, for myself, I wouldn't want to switch teaching states and be a new administrator. I believe one or the other, but both may be difficult simulaneously. One of the interviewers was a first year administrator from out of state. They ended the interview and that person walked me to the door. I was okay with that for the following reason: Would I want someone so petty being my supervisor? I know the market is tough, but sometimes it is important to be thankful for the jobs that you don't get.

I'm autistic and one thing that's hard for me is remembering that most everybody else I'll ever talk to cannot recall conversations-literally word for word-with 70% accuracy, so knowing what other people will remember is very helpful.

“Tell me about yourself?” That’s a question designed for you to eliminate yourself from the list of applicants, or to hopefully give them the answers to the illegal questions they can’t ask you. Never answer that question with personal information.

@@theonlywalltostareat5808 talk about your work related accomplishments and duties not mentioned in your resume or application. Should always have some of those saved for that type of question. Or summarize your resume in more detail.

This is incredible. You have re-created my perception of how to respond to such common questions when looking for a job or changing jobs. I completely agree with you, especially in the area of trying to bring the conversation during interviews back to the job you're looking for, because the circumstances of your previous job role and action may not be applicable today, given the disruption that digitalization has caused. The "other side of the table" perspectives are really true in these videos. It's really refreshing to hear these things since, I have been sitting on both sides of the table and I see this is taught next to none in academic schools for instance.
Education is good but then again so are the real life hints and experience. You have to start a career somewhere and these videos do give good ground root for that.

Ive been interviewed by the ceo of a company one time, and honestly it was great because he did most of the talking. Way more personable and dowb to earth than any hiring manager ive ever interviewed with. Ive moved to another job since then, but the guy told me i always have a job with his company.

The only time I knew I was not going to get the job early on in the interview was when the interviewer scanned my CV and said "Hmm you've got more qualifications than I have." Difficult to get out of that one. Later I worked in UK for a large government organisation and the management decided they wanted everybody to list all their major qualifications on their email signatures. It lasted a week. Many senior managers were embarrassed by learning how qualified their teams were compared to them - I know qualifications are not everything but this was priceless as everyone benefits from a little humility every now and then.

I used to reply, "What would you like to know?" When I was a kid applying at a grocery store where they were interviewing a 100 other teenagers they were relieved and moved on lol other jobs some people asked more detail some didn't know how to handle it. 50 50 response. This reflection on the resume is way better I love it
As a prior recruiter this is actually pretty good advice.

I'm glad to see that I've been doing this right instinctively. Years ago, I carefully drafted this little pitching speech and now I just add one or two sentences on to it with every new position. Though any half-decent career has more stops than you can cover in 45 seconds without sounding like you are reading items off a menu (unless you are a graduate or very new to the job market and don't have much experience).
I am just watching this video two years after I did this with my VP interview with my boss, a director. I got lucky and did this instinctively. I got the job and have been here two years, so it clearly works!!! Great video!
It really is a shame to see that I can watch voluntary this FIVE MINUTES long video and be like "Wow, this was so informative and helpful! I really understood it now!", whereas in the past six years of school, which were not voluntary, I left school being like "Wow I absolutely understood nothing because the teacher didn't even said anything relevant."

The US school system has been more about mental conditioning than teaching for a while now. I was homeschooled for 2~ hours a day up to about 15, and from there I started working in construction with my brother. The only thing school did for me was teach me the fundamentals of math and language (which are both language, really). Everything else I did in school, if I wasn't interested in it, flew right back out of my head when I was done.
The fundamentals of language are used to apply more focused learning in subjects of interest, and almost everything I've learned on top of said language has come from direct experience and/or independent research.

Schools are outdated and designed for the industrial age, you are taught to follow orders instead of thinking for yourself.

Outstanding! I recently had a resume with 8 jobs in the past 3 years. I told her I can tell she is honest by actually providing her true work history and asked her to tell me something else truthful. She told me she did not like being told what to do and until she found a job that allowed her freedom she would not be providiing her services longterm. I thanked her for coming in and to expect a call regardless of the outcome and in the meantime she should seriously consider opening her own business.
I have done a lot of job interviews as the technically skilled side kick for the manager. Most of the times the manager spend less than 5 minutes on preparation and decides on how much he/she liked the guy/girl instead of being the best person for the job. That was my task.

Great feedback. Just started looking for a job the last three weeks. Had three interviews, so I’m getting some traction. It’s stressful not knowing when you’ll land that job. I literally watched this video early this morning and had a zoom interview with a company that interviewed with in January and bombed big time with. They posted the same position recently and I decided to try it again and I did so much better this time around, they asked me to come in for a 2nd interview. It's been decades since I have had to interview for a Company, so I was not sure now to answer any questions but watching your video really helped me a lot. Thank you so much for the help. I hope I get this job but if not, these tools will help me in getting my next one.
