  • ORF The Neighbourhood Scope | Elections 2024 | More than two months after the conclusion of the much-anticipated general elections in Pakistan, the status quo in the country is still fragile. Even as the independents backed by the PTI won the most number of seats- defying the establishment’s attempts to push Imran Khan’s party towards obscurity- it fell short of a majority. The PML-N and PPP along with other smaller parties formed a coalition government, with Shehbaz Sharif appointed as the Prime Minister on March 4. Since the return of his brother and PML-N supremo, Nawaz Sharif, the dalliance between the establishment as well as the party is all but evident. In the backdrop of these political machinations, the country’s economy continues to be in the doldrums, with inflation reaching close to 30% and the foreign exchange reserves fast depleting. The deteriorating relationship with the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and the consequent increase in attacks inside the country by the TTP have also severely affected the country’s security situation.
How will Pakistan fare in the next few months with the new coalition government in power and its purported aim of stabilising the country? How sustainable will this second attempt at forming a hybrid government in Pakistan be and how will the military respond to any impending differences? Will Imran Khan be successful in leveraging his party to present a strong opposition against the incumbent government? What effect will this instability have on the country’s quest to secure another loan from the IMF to stabilise its economy?
This event was part of the series “The Neighbourhood Scope,” a monthly feature of the Strategic Studies Programme that intends to rekindle key conversations, questions, and debates concerning India’s neighbourhood.
    Speakers:
Husain Haqqani, Senior Fellow, Hudson Institute; Former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States
Sushant Sareen, Senior Fellow, Observer Research Foundation, India
Marvi Sirmed, Journalist and Human Rights Advocate, Pakistan

    With due respect !
India cannot become like Paxtan even after establishing Hindutva !
There is no zimmi culture in Hindus!, even before we had constitution we were seculars !
What the left-liberal and islamic elite have peddled with just ulterior motive there is nothing as such!
Infact we see the opposite with sar tan se juda type acts across India!
The majority of indians see this as reclaiming their rights on this land, with partition we had given up lands for i$lamic followers but after that they want to establish their hegemony on india which is not acceptable to large populace !
All the parties had deformed the democracy with vote bank politics and then we see this reaction from the majority ! the pollical class think they have the 20% of the vote with another 15% they can rule forever! and in the process ignoring the largest populace!

The fact that the rise of Hindutva has been going hand in hand with the rise of India is proof enough that India will not go the pakistani way as with the rise of islamism. Also the Army in India still has no role in politics whatsoever. This is exactly what triggers the Indian and pakistani so called liberals since they can't create any equivalence here to benefit their leftist politics mainly based on pro second largest majority and anti majority in the context of Indian politics.

I am addressing my comment to Haqqani Sb and Marvi and very reluctantly to the moderator of this discussion…I went on listening intently and patiently through the better part of the discussion but regrettably this seems like a paid Pakistan bashing session where most of the Indian panelists are gloating as though India has just emerged as the largest economy of the world l, its abject poverty alleviated and it is now in a position to dictate terms to the regional players. They in a typical industry an style elide over their economies and political woes of the past and present, where they’ve always done things different and better, this character Sushant dropped even pretenses of neutrality by mentioning that economic disrepair in Pakistan is a matter of inner satisfaction for him because is an enemy country…and yet Marvi refers to him my friend Sushant, this outing could have been extremely informative and unbiased if the intention was to analyse the political and economic stacking in Pakistan objectively… these characters will never conduct an honest discussion without their latent animus and therefore Haqqani Sb and Marvi should have insisted on keeping the template objective otherwise should not have participated in it…this was at best a lowercase Modi appeasing exercise that you see on Republicans TV or First Post like propaganda platforms. Indians with the exception of Karan Thapar and a few others can’t really help being sneaky and vile

right! these people arriving without visa should be the goal not normalizing relations and trust to good enough extent that soldiers on either side don't have to petrol critical places on border even in deadly climates. For all this sophistry and pretense of wisdom, what with these unrealistic and neurotic expectations.

Bad in enough Pak media is obsessed to report only India related news on a daily basis, now ORF is giving airtime to a rogue terrorist country! No one in India other than the bleeding hearts in media, bureaucracy and anti India forces, is interested to learn anything on that terrorist country, even though it’s our neighbor! Spare the Indian public of such discourse, given the shortage of time in everyone’s calendar!
    Thank you!

    • @krishnaats7141
      @krishnaats7141 Před 22 dny +2

That is correct. But it is important to have shtrubodh on all levels. If people are investing their time to understand and strategize against these inimical forces, we should be happy. ORF is very influential in making our foreign policy.
