Gulf Middle Powers Navigate Taliban-Ruled Afghanistan |Naghma Sahar | Tilak Devasher |Shalini Chawla
Fellows Seminar Series | Amid ongoing churning in the international order, the world’s ‘middle powers’ will likely take more ownership of conflict points such as Afghanistan. In this seminar, our panelists will examine the complexities of the middle power states in the Persian Gulf, in the context of Afghanistan being the theatre of new geopolitical contestations following the US’s exit and the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. This subject is tackled in ORF’s research paper, Middle Powers in the Gulf: Navigating the Return of the Taliban in Afghanistan (orfonline.org).
Chair:
Naghma Sahar, Senior Fellow, ORF
Panel:
Kabir Taneja, Fellow, ORF
Shalini Chawla, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Air Power Studies

This is not a moral issue about good stopping bad...cos if we went that route, the west has blood trail of their evil even to date. This is about thw West wanting the world to rally around them against their competition. That's what it ultimately comes down to. These panel discussions show the problem with the west.... They live within a bubble and echo chambers that they habe no appreciation of the naunces of politics outside of their sphere. They think theynhave the right and its for everyone to fall in line to their self appointed hegemony. They talk sovereignty and all that virtue signalling only when it suits them, then violate it when it's beneficial to their interests. They want to virtue signal countries for their alliances that serve their interests. We are comfortable dealing with all. And we dont have to be enemies with the West's competition. Thats all it is.

It's too ya ya goody goody. We need to be more business like. This socio-cultural people to people contact approach is too cheesy. Understand these countries are aspirational & have an opportunity to develop faster than the region (india), break shackles of geography (shadow of india) and have their favourite ideological alignment ( Islam for Maldives, AntiWest for SriLanka & Bangladesh). Instead of counting evils of bri & debt trap tell them we will be happy if they become Singapore or dubai yet geopolitics & security will tie them to us. It's like telling a kid I would love for you to be a star athlete but caution against drugs in a bad company. Most countries respect sensitivities say w.r.t. Pakistan. We can sensitize them more about our concerns and show benefits of staying with the region (not just India). At the Sametime make them aware of the consequences if they hurt us.

Do we need this? On topics of mutual interest and benefit, we can collaborate. Maybe we should junk the Quad? We dont really get access to US bases. Do we need cismoa, beca, lsa etc anymore? We have issues with china. We will confront china on those. US is not really stepping in to help us. Why rub china wrong on matters of importance only to the US. That doesnt benefit us. On pakistan, frankly the US is an enabler of that state. So net negative for india.

A big disappointing discussion and exposes the lack of depth of ideas among the top defence pandits in New Delhi. Its scary...Undoubtedly, wars of the future can be won only by those who are best at innovation. There is no question & discussion on how we can make our defence manufacturing/management chase innovation & meritocracy-driven. 1) No discussion of how we can get the absolute best out of huge defence manufacturing elephants - Ordinance factories gift from LEFTIST CONGRESS mindset. How can these ordinance factories with domain knowledge and manufacturing know-how be transformed into innovative defence manufacturing like Ukrainians can do on the fly while fighting a war. Can they be privatised and employees made partners by the government distributing a part of its stake to employees etc? 2) When people like Dr.Joshi's vintage feel his responsibility is to report the flaws and criticise but not to provide constructive ideas and solutions. We inherently have an empty ideation level. The old defence management structure designed largely (90% odd) by NEHRUVIAN BRAIN DEADS has given India only one clear win in 1971. All other wars were loose or scrap/stalemate, which left a huge economic cost. So any new structure, especially those followed by the US with a much higher away war-winning ratio, can only be better. What we need to debate is how to implement those best defence management practises.

The accusation of "whataboutism" is absurd in principle, as it makes it impossible to take a global view of the balance of power in the world, as if there were a local view of events when analyzing a local conflict. It is obvious that the USA has repeatedly violated the territorial integrity of other nations in recent decades, Iraq being a glaring example of this. At the 2007 Security Conference, Putin stated that the "rules based order" permanently disregarded international law - he indicated that Russia would not put up with this in the long term.17 years later, Russia has now acted in Ukraine. The shock to the West is not the war or the war in Europe, the shock is that for the first time since 1945 a state is taking military action against the West, which is the only reason why the moral outrage is so great - how dare they question our monopoly on the use of force, that is the crux of the matter. This is the only reason why the West is prolonging its support for a war in Ukraine that it has already lost.
