The ATV aD5 is a great device for e-drummers that like a simple and user-friendly module. There are no complicated menus and no deep knowledge is required for using it. You can trigger real drum samples without using additional software. The aD5 will also be constantly updated with new sounds, improved trigger settings and probably new functionality.
Kit Setup:
Roland VH-12 hi-hat, 2x CY-14 Crash, CY-12 Crash, CY-15R Ride, R-drums 20” RTB Kick Trigger, Torque Trigger Tom 10, 12, 14”/ Snare 13”
UPDATE: The hi-hat triggering has been improved via software update.

Here's a few tips i discovered recently that make the ad5 trigger much better.
1. For the 2 times soft hit just tap with your finger
2. For the 3 times hard hit don't hit very hard ,hit a little lighter than you normally hit
3. Just run the wizards for set up don't mess with the other stuff,it just creates problems, using the mixer is fine just stay away from advanced settings like curve, sensitivity etc.
4 If you use a roland RT30 trigger on the bass drum set the bass drum to kd 140,for some reason if you set it to rt kick or rt mesh kick it won't pick up all your hits but setting it to kd 140 seems to work perfectly ,also for toms you can set those to rt mesh trigger and they work fine just seems to be a bass drum thing.
5. If you don't want a lot of dynamics on your bass drum just hit 3 times soft and for the hard hit just hit 3 times slightly harder than your soft hits, this works on all pads but i don't know why you would do it on anything but the bass drum.
These few things have made my ad5 module work great and makes me love my ad5 module even more.
Happy drumming.
Thanks for the input!
Great video!
Thank you, yours are great too.
ah the start of great friendship!
I bought it the more I play with it the better it gets I'm really looking forward to the new dW kit they're releasing it really has a feel all other e-kits don't
Nice!
Great vid ,very informative.
demonocus drumocus Thanks!
I like her voice and accent, besides we are here to check out vdrum tips nothing else, keep up the good work guys.
Between this one and a td25/27.. only main thing it’s recording midi with SP3... wich one would be good for triggering?
Running atv cymbals - jobeky triggers on everything else
Thanks
have you concidered doing a review on the Megadrum module?
Excellent.
For playing live how would you compare it to a roland td20 25 or 30, both used with or without superior drummer or ezdrummer?
The TD-20/30/ and 2box are live-modules IMO, because of their 6/8 separate outputs. The others are more of a practice/recording device.
Could you do a review of the Nord Drum 3?
A few questions: How do you think it compares to a TD25 as far as triggering and sound quality? Do you think it will work with drum splitters? And will the downloadable sets be free?
The TD-25 is way ahead in terms of triggering. The ATV has better sounds, since they are real. I don't think they will charge for the sets. The TD-25 has some flaws too, but I would still consider it to be the better module at this point of time. I might write a comparison.
Thank you for the response. I just looked up the price of the ATV aD5 and ouch! $1000. If they could just lower the price a bit they could sell a lot of these.
I agree! 1000 is a bit too much for what you get at the moment.
trying to trigger my td25 with ad5 so i can layer or just use certain sounds not sure why its not working.
How do you want to do that?
Usb
The USB ports are technically midi outputs, you cannot just connect them together. The TD-25 needs a driver software on a pc. The only thing you can do is connecting one modules output to the mp3 player in of the other module.
would it be possible if i add another tom and another crash for my td 6 drum?
Read this: www.v-drumtips.com/adding-more-pads/
thanks
What all drums and cymbals you can connect to it?
you can connect 3 toms, snare, bass, hihat, crash, ride and 2 additional pads.
Have you guys tested this module with external triggers?
no, but it should work too.
I would love to see a comparison with the sounds in the TD50 module!
Me too, but don't have a TD-50, besides those modules are each in a complete different league.
True, but I just like to see how natural the Roland module sounds. Because pretty much every other Roland module sounds very fake.
In the past, Roland used generated synth sounds, this is why they sounded fake. The aD5 and also the TD-50 trigger real samples.
I'm getting mine tommarow whoooo hooooo
Cool, what setup do you have?
Cool! What do you think about the module?
I like the sounds more that the TD-50, but I still have some concerns about the machine gun effect and I feel that the volume of the soft hits is tooo soft.
I think this issue will be improved. The toms sound really good actually.
Vdrum Tips Yep... very very natural... I hope they improve this module, because it have so much potential. that AD link would be very awesome
I think the link connector is the key. There will probably be devices for expanding the module according to your needs.
Can you create your own user kit within these 5 predefined kits?
No, as additional kit.
can somebody please tell me if this module is compatible with Aquarian onheads and inheads??? thanks
They are not supported for the moment.
r there any effects like reverb
Todd Lavigne no
Have to say the EZ Drummer 2 sounds were by far the best to me, but I am trying to stay away from the computer! Is there a way to load sounds/samples from EZ Drummer and then playing without a computer?
Geoffrey Merrifield At this moment yes (2 years ago). But now they have extended the sounds, they do not sound bad. Ofcourse EZDrummer2 is hard to battle:)
Would you choose this module or a 2Box Drumit Three (whenever it actually comes out :( )
Geoffrey Merrifield Depends on what you want to do. I personally would choose the aD5, cause the triggering has improved it is compatible with all kinds of pads.
I want the simplicity the AD5 offers, but maybe having some editing ability over tuning, FX and using my drum Samples. I would just use it for studio work.
Update: In the end I sold my Yamaha MoX6, Korg KingKORG, and my Elektron Analog Rytm to buy a Yamaha Montage. The keyboard/synth sounds are amazing, but a crucial part for me was being able to load and play my drum samples via midi with my e-kit. It has been wonderful. I added a Roland SPD100X for my snare
wheres the midi to connect to superior drummer?
Her voice reminds me of Linn's from Ace of Base. I enjoyed the review much more because of her voice. Not just because of the female factor. The majority of review voices are guys, and many are not so good. An ad is like radio, there should be some skill there. Sometimes I have wanted to listen to the info on other videos but the voice was very annoying. Well done.
Ironically, the only drum sound on this review that really knoced me out was the EZ Drummer through pc. The reason I like drum modules is to get away from the computer..
Geoffrey Merrifield Haha, what a great comparison:D Yes, my Intension to use the voice of my girlfriend was to make it different. But she quit voice acting for my channel. She is tired of it:D The sounds where of, but indeed not as good as EZD2.
Two questions: 1) Do you have any thoughts on the 2Box Drumit Three module? Trying to decide whether to keep my Elektron Analog Rytm (using as a drum module triggered by Yamaha e-kit), or get one of the following: ATV AD5, Peral Mimic Pro or 2Box Drumit Three. 2) Does your voice actress have a site for fans? Thanks and keep doing what you do!

No MIDI in or Out
TalkShowHost The Midi out is the USB port
Great video as usual! ATV also has some new drum pads coming out which appear to use speakers as sensors. www.vdrums.com/forum/general/products/1123401-new-edrum-module-atv-ad5?p=1150992#post1150992 It would be awesome if you could post a video on a DIY version of this. How could someone use a speaker inside a drum shell this way? Cheers!
man this thing is like $1000.00 seems pricey to me.
Better than roland prices and it sounds 10 times better too
change your voice
Well, voice was changed half a year ago. But great idea.
No, her voice is amazing!! Why would anyone choose a dude voice over a great female voice?
Tom sounds aren't good and lots of machine gunning. Looks promising though
Watching a video and playing it is slightly different. From the videos, I thought that too, but in real life they are ok. The machine gunning could be related to the centre cone triggers. I think you will have better results with rim near triggers.
Good product, crappy player.
