ATV aD5 Drum Module Review

  • The aD5 module is priced at $1099. So that means its going head to head with the Roland TD25($999) module. This module has a lot of things going for it. It can work with Roland and Yamaha pads, AT THE SAME TIME! But that extremely wide dynamic range is its major selling point. I can explain it, but you won’t really GET IT unless you play it for yourself for an hour or two. There really is nothing like it in that department. Also, if you really like the sounds, then this is the module for you, because at the end of the day, that’s what really matters. But for those that like control over their sounds, this is defiantly NOT the module for you. This module is about absolute simplicity. It uses as few buttons and knobs as possible, it gives you no control over the tone of each drum and cymbal. It is what it is. Its not for everyone, but Its worth a look if you’re in the market for a module.

    Wow how did I not know this existed? Great review I am going to look more into this. I am doing a A to E conversion of a Sonor drum set. I am looking for the most real experience I can get. I understand the simplicity but that has a huge appeal to me. Thanks Justin glad they sent this to you for you to review.

    I own this because of this review, Atv has since released 2 kits and this kit shines when you convert an acoustic to electric right out the box I wasent nuts about it but then I used rim triggers on an acoustic with mesh heads and it now what I've always been looking for very satisfied with it but having trouble correctly doing updates

    Hi Justin. I realize this is an older video but hope you still see new comments. I really like the sound of this module. I would be very happy with the full ATV aD5 drumkit and module but it would likely cost more than $6000 cdn. I would like to record using this module so would later have to buy their expansion rig that will give the 8 independent outputs. Can you suggest a reasonable approach for purchasing a kit to use with this module. I have an old Ludwig kit I am not using so could add mesh heads and triggers. Just seems that when I start adding up the price of Roland cymbals I am getting close the cost of the entire ATV setup. I guess another totally different option could be the Roland TD-17 KVXS and trigger Superior Drummer using this modules usb midi function. Any input is appreciated. (I have owned a TD-20 kit in the past but didn't really like the sounds. Also owned the 2Box Drumit 5. It was my favorite so far but I found the cymbals to be sometimes inconsistent in their triggering. Thanks.

    First of all thank you Justin! I am a first time electric drum kit buyer, and your videos have been so so so helpful!! You the man! Does ANYONE KNOW how you would get effects onto the ATV module? Doesn't look like there is any built in options to add them internally, so how would you put effects on them? This doesn't have split outs for each drum/tom/cymbol?

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  Před 7 lety

      I'd get the ATV over the TD12. But If I was in that price range, I'd actually get a Roland TD25 module. It's about the same price as the ATV ad5.

      Thank you very much for answering. The problem is that I have the hi hat VH 12 and the TD 25 is not compatible.
      Does TD 12 have latency problems or something similar? Does the VH 12 work well on the ATV aD5?
      Thank you very much!

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  Před 7 lety

      Last we tried, the VH11/12/13 were not 100% smoothly with the AD5 :( but that was almost a year ago. A software patch may or may not have fixed it. No, the TD12 doesn't have latency problems.

  • @65Drums
    @65Drums  Před 8 lety +11

    One last thing: when you play kick, snare, and ride really fast, the ride sustain sporadically clips. It's something they need to fix in the next update.

      As much as i love the ad5 this ride clipping does bother me,i brought this issue up on vdrum forums almost a year ago but no one believed me and said i hit the ride near the bow zone and that that caused it but this never happened with my td9 module and the same set so i knew it was an ad5 issue and to this day they still haven't fixed it.

  • @MegaBeartrap
    @MegaBeartrap Před 7 lety

    So let me get this straight: I would have to use this into a Roland circa TD25+ module for it's benefits in conjunction with Addictive/Superior VST on top of a custom edrum kit with mesh heads and a converted kit in order to replicate the feel of an acoustic with the sound of an acoustic. Also the Drumtec video doesn't have the same volume imbalance issues that are clearly apparent here. My research on this subject matter is driving me bat-shit crazy and I'm already bat-shit crazy!

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  Před 7 lety

      No one said you had to buy this module. No you don't have to use it with a TD25 style kit. And if you are using Addictive Drums or some other drum software, the module don't matter much anyway. You don't need to drop money on an expensive one, stick with what you got. This isn't the module for me, but it appeals to some drummers. Everyone needs a different setup. Good luck with yours.

      My bad, I'm not hating on anything I mentioned, especially not this module. I love the dynamics on the aD5, but I love the Roland module's features, that's why it's driving me nuts. In the end i'll probably just end up converting an acoustic lol.

    I've heard this unit in a few demos ,beside a 2BOX it sounds very un layered in its sounds
    the layers of samples just arn't there for detail.
    The 2box has massive layers on some snare sounds ,this is better than most but its still manchine gun beside a 2 box.
    Also that 5 kit thing is a bit of a joke to say the sounds have so few stacks.
    I know the 2box inside out ,the 2box is about as close as you will get on sample play back
    Ok having said the 2BOX is killer because you can throw massive files at it ,it has
    huge flops in other areas.
    The unit is really fussy ,if you get a unit dont do a review of a 2box on roland pads .really its not made for that it will just jump to its top sample layers with its very hot inputs.
    It's a side trigger unit and the head is damped with foam.
    The unit is no way a roland ,its got a basic feel to it Its basic but gets the job done.
    The hi hat is a pain and the unit wont run anyother hi hat control. so its 2 box or nothing
    maybe 42box control.
    The 2box along with everything else cant run a roland pad ,yes i hear it plays rolands but ive never come across a pad that uses roland reversed polarity systems. ? so its threshold based and thats no way the same.
    The 2box is a great sound but its not as modern in build as it should be .
    Coming from a roland to a 2box is a bit of a shock ....it doesnt even have built in reverb
    :)

      I have had the 2box for a number of years now. It's a module you don't really fall in love with right out of the gate. I messed around with triggering addictive drums and making sample for a while, but slowly I bonded with it. It's strength is in the dynamic control... I swear you can pick off individual samples in the 127 layer deep sounds. I didn't even realize I was doing it for the longest time. Might be the pads plus the drumit 5 module too idk. Apparently the drumit 3 is really good with various pads. ("I recall some youtuber saying you could strap a piezo on a banana and get a good response")

      Funny thing about this old comment is at the time i knew very little about the ad5 but anyway for some reason not long after this while researching modules to upgrade my td9 i ended up giving the ad5 another chance.
      I looked at the roland td30 but even used it was 2k cad and i couldn't justify spending 2k on used gears,i looked at the td50 as well but wasn't impressed with the sounds or the price,i was very impressed with the mimic but it was a bit pricey and the touch screen made me nervous at the time.
      I looked at the 2box drumit 3 and decided to take another look at the ad5 as well. The drumit 3 sounded good but they kept delaying it and it seemed like it was never going to be released,i also wasn't impressed with the 4gig non removable sd card.
      After spending months looking at module videos and reading specs i finally settled on the atv and i am very happy with it,still not a big fan of the cable snake but i can live with it after all my td9 also had a cable snake. For me the cymbal sounds are what really sells the ad5 to my ears they are the best i have heard,the set up wizards are also very nice and time saving.
      So i have come full circle i started out not giving the ad5 a chance because of the cable snake and now i own it and love it. For me i don't need a lot of kits i just want a nice sounding realist maple kit and the ad5 has that,i got the one i'm using free from the sound store.
