PROP COFFEE

- Ever notice how movie coffee cups sometimes sound empty, as if the actors are fake-drinking? This can really hinder the believability of the movie. In this video, Prop Master Scott Reeder will show you how the film industry solves that problem (and scare his work buddies in the process).

My favorite part about this is that everyone fully believed he would throw coffee on them
Nice name, I approve
Wish I could walk around throughout life pretending to throw prop coffee on strangers out in the wild. Seems like it would be pretty fun.
Yea clearly it's not out of the realm of possibility, so he gets good reactions
Funny how your kids have learned not to react to any of your pranks, but your co-workers haven't figured out yet that you're a practical joker!
Or something else😂
As a viewer it’s been more about the visual WEIGHT of the cup vs SEEING a dark brew in the cup. This is perfect 👍
Just get some coffee from crafty
It's also the sound.
@@Thatguy7242on a Union set we’re not allowed to give them actual coffee since it’s a stimulant. Dark colored water is the go to to weigh the cup down.
This only partially solves the problem though. Quite often the "looking empty" comes from actors moving the cups without taking care to not slosh the contents over the side, because there is nothing to slosh over.
having weight in the cup makes it more likely that the actor will be able to subconsciously treat the cup like it's full of liquid though, at least moreso than an obviously empty cup.
you could just pour some water or something on top of the prop we see here
Or they could...*gasp*...have actual coffee on set!
@@RohannvanRensburg you can't spill fake coffee and you don't have to worry about continuity errors if the cup is guaranteed to always look like it has the same level of liquid in it. if it were simpler to just use real coffee I promise you they'd just be using real coffee
@Jay G. I doubt these people are very conscientious... If so, how would they conclude that having the cups TOTALLY EMPTY would be the best decision?
That rush of adrenaline when someone fake throws a drink on you

Thanks!
totally agree!! omg 😂
Agreed
what’s it saying?
@@kinkynikk It's saying skidamarink a dink a dink, skidamarink a doo.
IIIII loove yoouu!
I also love it when someone "takes a drink" from these empty cups and then immediately says their line of dialogue.
In real life, you'd just be gargling out the liquid you obviously didn't swallow.
Especially with a hot beverage. Either their drink is cold or they’re too obviously sipping on air.
“woAH-“
that got me 🤣
“Actors have been getting roasted for years about this.” I see what you did there!
"getting all frothy and making a big brew-haha' lmao I only realized it after this comment
What, roasted coffe beans?
@@livywithane yeah, he’s making a video about coffee.
Coffees been getting roasted for years for existing
Clever. Veery clever.
I love how he couldn't wait to go terrorize everyone with his new prop, lol
"What did you do?"
Sounds like you have a bit of a history my guy lol
It is kinda funny watching them. But every once in awhile, an actor does a really good job of making it seem like there is something in there!
If you never noticed anything, they did a good job.
Loved the ending where he was just being a menace to everyone in his workplace LOL. I'm sure everyone and him enjoyed him milking every bit of fun from that new prop
@@jamieyakimets839 hmm
Bad choice of phrasing dude.
This guy would be so entertaining to work with.
@@SylverScourge in what way? Or are you just saying you don’t understand with bad phrasing because that’s also ok
One thousandth like lol
@@halcyon_exb apparently it was phrased badly enough for the commenter to delete it.
These props need to take off! Empty coffee cups in tv shows are ridiculous and distracting because no matter if the actor pretends they're full we all can tell that they're holding something completely empty. This adds weight and makes it more realistic thank you !
......it's just coffee (or a lack thereof) my dude, I think you might be easily distracted
@@SatanicBarbeque Nah, the empty coffee cups behave differently the cups with coffee because of how torque works.
@@_stupidbro who cares, it's just a coffee cup. If you lose your immersion in a show or movie because a cup seems lighter than it should, then it seems the issue really lies in your inability to focus 🤷♂️
@@SatanicBarbeque It's not even just that it's lighter, it moves incredibly differently because of the different center of mass. The eye is naturally drawn to things that move, and the coffee cups don't move right. It's not an easy distraction thing, because if they did just leave the coffee cup in the background somewhere, nobody would notice that it isn't steaming despite being recently purchased, as an example, nor any other consistency problem.
Tldr: By having it be something that the actors interact with and move around, the scene draws attention to it, and the production suffers the consequences of doing so to something unrealistic.
@@_stupidbro no, its an easy distraction thing. I have fucking ADHD and i have an eye for detail and this shit is literal autism focus nonsense
What bothers me more in shows....when they go to take a drink from a fountain cup that should be full since they only just started eating and it makes the "empty cup air sucking ice rattle" noise (I'm sure there's a German word for that exact noise).

Absolutely loved watching you pretend to throw the drink at people, their reactions are so good and that's a fun truly harmless prank lol
tbh the last performance i did we all just had our cups filled with tea or coffee. Worked really well to add naturalism to our lines too since sometimes we would really need a drink

Imagine accidentally throwing the cup at someone’s face
The coffee cup in Game of Thrones looked very realistic.
House is so bad for this - 13 gets given a fresh, full cup of coffee, then tips her whole head back and holds it at a 100 degree angle just to take a first sip.
Well that was more a lack of acting skill on that show
@@ShugoAWay honestly most of the cast was good till near the last season with the new crop
@@wendyokoopa7048 eh maybe ut was just me but the acting always felt super obvious less like characters and more like actors giving half assed lines

Thank YOU! Always getting annoyed when actors are handling oviously empty cups.
Dam I'd love to be this guy's bro
Here's an idea: fill it with water. Gives you something to drink when you're thirsty too.
ikr. like why the hell would they leave them empty to begin with
Because any time an actor accidently spills it, the mess would impact continuity.
Someone gets a slash of water on their white jacket during filming and not only is it obvious it's water and ruins the take, but now filming needs to stop while it gets cleaned up.
And can you imagine how many times the make-up team would get mad at actors who take overzealous sips and need touched up again?
No thanks.
I knew someone had to have said it. Was thinking the same thing.
@@ScaryWombat dye it
Pretty sure that might make it worse.
LMAO loving how you just roll with the public's criticism.
The fact that you can still add liquid on top of that for drinking is actually amazing

That "roasted" pun flew over my head

Thank you!!!
i love seeing more of the staff. this is all such an interesting process. from graphics to function design.
Watch for the props, stay for the puns
