I had an old Honda CR500R back in the late 80's, what a brute. The power was there no matter what gear you were in. Watching this guy throw around this 500AF I'm guessing it's a lot lighter and easier to manage the power band, it sounds like it revs out quicker than the old guy!
I have a 97 CR500R in great shape. I spoke to a Privateer Team Owner that ran a 97 CR500R in the AMA Nationals. He told me engine wise, all they did to it was clean up the ports, run a Pro Circuit Pipe, run a .050 thick base gasket and jet the carb. Nothing else was done to it. They ran the thicker gasket to lessen the bottom end/mid hit and to give it better top end. He said the bike was a Rocketship and easier to ride at the same time for his rider.
I made my own af 500 18 years ago w/a 1st gen 250 frame. Handled great but the best part was waiting on the line for the gate to drop and getting those condescending looks from the up and coming 426-450-520 4st riders. When I fired her up, the smirks disappeared. By the time I got to the first turn, they were grabbing tearoffs and rubbing their rock-bruised knuckles. Totally priceless! Bonus: they won't shadow you on the track. Get hit w/ cr500 or kx500 roost, you will know why.
That bike is mint and the sound is perfect!
And this is why the AMA wont allow them. this engine is deckades old and will wax any 450 made today. Look how 15k was spent to trick it out, no more than what the factory bikes are running, and it would run circles around the other guys. Plus once you had to work on it, keep a fresh top end, good gas, air filter, and it would save so much more than working on a 4 banger. Way easier to work on too. And way more fun. And you look and sound badass.
Wright Way Vaping I dont think you have any clue what goes into a Factory Bike as of right now a Factory 450 is almost the cost of 6 figures and i doubt you even have the smallest idea of there power output to weight ratio 15k goes into the engine alone on a factory bike 250 or 450 now
tyler mcguyrt Im sorry but thats not allowed anymore. Those were worx bikes that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and they were creating so much power it was an unfair advantage to the privateers that could only afford a used piece of shit. So the AMA did one thing right and shut that down. If you consider all the time put in the factory bikes, just fir the riders, it dose amount to a lot of money, but no 6 figures. Ricky Carmichals 05 factory 450 sold for 30k And you can get a new factory KTM, which they made 500 or something like that for around 11-12k. But you are not alowed to alter the engines in any way exept for bolt on parts and whatever the factory dose to them for mass production. I have been racing for 10 years now and am a top of the class B class racer. One of my best friends was going to manage pro circut kawasaki, but his wife made him turn down the job. Motocross has long been a passion of mine so I do know a thing or two.
Wright Way Vaping im not saying you dont but i race as well and have 3 friends that race as privateers and when Ryan Villopoto still raced his 2015 Kx 450f his race bike was worth upwards of $60,000 and there pro riders AMA did not shut that down the parts on new factory bikes are still works parts and the engine still has the same shit in it but better this stuff is common knowledge to someone who pays attention im not saying you do not know anything but as young as i am at 19 ive been around it my whole life and RC's 450 sold for 30k in 2005 yes thats 2005 theres inflation and better parts now then there was then and as far as privateers go if they want it that bad and have the talent then they can still win Weston pike is a prime example of it CAN be done.
tyler mcguyrt I understand, but Villapotos bike sold for so much because it was one of the only bikes he sold and now the sport has become much larger and more money has gotten involved. But the bikes themselves arent worth that much, i mean they are worth a lot, but you pay for who rode it. And the bikes do have a lot of power, i met Jim Bones Bacon and he showed me around a little and what he dose to engines, there is a ton of work and time put in, but the cost is usually around 5-7k to get an engine done by him plus whatever the bike total was when you bought it.
Wright Way Vaping I dont know man Championship runners there bikes are much better than just a normal pro rider on a team. Theres more technology on these bikes than most people think and They are actually not allowed to sell factory bikes anymore especially championship bikes for a million dollar rider you need a million dollar bike at champ level it doesnt come down to the rider as much as it comes down to the bike suspension, engine theres alot and thats where he money comes from

CR500R, Best engine ever made in motocross history period, Why do they keep revisiting this engine still after fifteen years now that's it's out of production.yeah go figure, Wake up Honda Corp, this engine is in massive demand and very instinct.Parts are not being made for the engine anymore, making it a very expensive engine to maintain.Honda bring back the beast, and if not the entire bike, At least the engine and the replacement parts for its true loyal CR500 fans and owners everywhere.
Sadly they hate 2 strokes despite being so dominant at all classes. May it be MotoGP or MX.
I took mine for a ride a few weeks back and let it slow down to 60 Ks and opened it wide up to see if it still excites me and in 3 seconds my ass was clenched tight and my eyes were watering, yep the magic is still there!

yep me 2 first 500 was an ex desert racer KTM 500 mxc road registered,but i was faster around the track on a 89 xr250,second one was a 93 kx500 setup for desert,but i was quicker around a track on a mates 91cr 250 and the third one was a husky wr 430 auto with a rear brake lever where the clutch normally goes.fastest i ever rode was on a 2002wr 250 f.

Great job on the bike conversion! Just to bad the rider was not using the 500cc like it should with clutching all the way the corners and afraid to proper shift the gears. The reason you don't see these bikes often on pro-level riders is that the modern way of riding does not fit the big two-strokes. Pre '95 World- and AMA championships 500cc riders are the real men who use these things the way it should. Perfect examples... Jean-Michel Bayle, Jeff Stanton, Georges Jobe, Dirk Geukens, Dave Thorpe, and many many more... Love this video, just thought this was also a very important thing to say. All the best from Belgium!!

What alot of people dont know is the ports and pipes on these bike are relatively corked up. You can port them a little better and build a pipe to compliment the ports and grab 10+ extra ponies.
what people dont realise is with serious porting head carb mods the full works you can get a 500cc 2t motor over 100bhp

problem with 500'S is there fun for awhile till they wear u out,which don't take long, I've got super clean 2000 cr 500 I only bought to ice race back in 2004..every year I fire it up and go for a play ride in the dirt with some novice buddy's and the playing field is leveled,then go back to my yz 250. swear I just ride it to hear it..fmf pipe ,silencer ,rav valve and some mild cleanup porting. nothing sounds like a 500 2t. make my hair stand on end and chill down my spine.

Really nice bike and it should be for $13,500 or more depending on how many extras you add on. You could opt for the Elsinor vintage tribute 500 they sell loaded up for $16,800 +. That is almost twice the retail price of two brand new 2016 CRF 450Rs. Sure the new, factory bikes are nothing like what Service Honda is selling but you're really gonna pay to get the two stroke feeling...
