  • 1st Infantry Division soldiers (probably Signal Corps men) show a little Yankee ingenuity. Using an M1 Grenade Projection Adapter with an M8 Launcher on a Carbine, wire is launched over the Roer / Rur River. This method for getting wire over an obstacle was published in the "Combat Lessons No. 6" booklet, along with a method for using a bazooka rocket to get wire across a stream.
At the end of the clip, you will see a soldier flash a booklet in front of the camera. This booklet is from the series that is the namesake of this account, G.I. Stories. The booklets were printed in France to give provide soldiers with a keepsake of their service and something that provided info that passed censors, so it could be sent home to loved ones. Many of these booklets were printed after VE Day, but, as you can see, the 1st ID had one by late February 1945.
