My father was in USA Air Force in the 70s and we lived in Wiesbaden. I loved the country, and these are some of the best memories of my life.

These people were all fleeing the advancing Red army. It must have been a huge relief for them to be in western Allied captivity rather than end up in the Gulags.

It's a pity the newsreel has no audio,so as to understand better the images...It seems to me this footage belongs to the after-the-war period, probably '45/'46....They were no longer fleeing from the East.

Late spring/early summer in northern Germany (British troops). The British are in shirtsleeves but the demobilized Wehrmacht troops are in heavy coats because they have no permanent shelter.

These are civilians and low level soldiers. The higher ups did not go through this. What about what Russia inflicted on Poland? They invaded just a few weeks after the German army in Sept. of 1939. What the Poles went through is horrible. If you did not serve in the army, you would be put at the front or go to jail. If you were lucky, you might be a medic. These are young people, thin and many are crippled and missing limbs. They were the survivors.

@@albertmarnell9976 You are mistaken. The sons and husbands of those so-called civilians were Nazi soldiers who also brutalized the native civilian there. And Russians are brutal still cannot top Germans when it comes to cruelties. Germans were so evil that they even tortured and gassed small children. Millions of small children and babies were gassed by Germans.

Millions of displaced German speakers heading west, another tragedy of Hitler's evil war. Not much sympathy for these people from the rest of Europe, after what the German armed forces and the vile SS did in so many countries, particularly Poland, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union , the Baltic States ,Yugoslavia and Greece . As they say in Germany there is no family that doesn't have a refugee grandparents or great grandparents. The same can be said if of every family of modern Greece with ancestors from the exchange of populations after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the formation of the Turkish Republic.
WW2 was horror that killed and murdered over 50 million people in Europe alone.
Germany in the modern age remembers , and tragically Britain forgets , with the illegal activities of Johnson, Patel, Truss and Braveman . Ashamed of successive governments of the UK since 2010 and their immoral , illegal and indefensible hostility to refugees especially Ukrainians and Afghans.
