Forgotten Heroes of Band of Brothers: The Battle of Nuenen | September 1944

  • On 20 September 1944, the Battle of Nuenen begun, which saw British and American troops fighting side-by-side to liberate the town from German occupation. Unfortunately, the battle has since been inaccurately depicted in many books and films, including the best-selling miniseries called Band of Brothers.
In today's video, I reveal what exactly unfolded around the town of Nuenen on that September day, focusing predominantly on the British Army's role and paying tribute to Corporal Ralph Stothard and Trooper Basil Nicholls who were Killed in Action during the fighting there; and who have since been forgotten in 99% of publications - hence the reasoning for the title of the video. This is the only publication of its kind on CZcams.

I am Ralph's great-grandaughter Holly, this video is greatly appriciated by his family. He left behind a two year old son, Grant, who is my paternal Grandfather. My grandad has spent a lot of time researching the events which led to his father and Basil's deaths, and we are exceedingly proud that his memory is still honoured today. I have not had the opportunity to visit his grave yet, although my Grandad has visited times with my Grandma and their three children. So on behalf of the Stothards thank you to the family who recovered and buried
my great grandfather and Basil, and thank you for making this video.

I visited his grave several years back. He is buried in a well-kept cemetery in Mierlo, a town close by. He is buried next to a Grenadier Guardsman which is the regiment I served in. The Dutch do an incredible job in memorializing those who died during the war and of course, this battle which was part of Op Market Garden. I will helpfully take my children there soon. RIP, Ralph and all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Please know that until this day, everybody here is still greatful for the liberation of our country, cities and villages by the US, Canadian and Brittish troops. These stories are a great addition to the memories we share every year at the memorials, and make me appreciate even more we can live in peace and freedom. I used to live in Arnhem. Crossed the "bridge too far" nearly every day by bike. Watched as the whole country celebrated the crowning of Beatrix as Queen from that bridge along with everybody else in Arnhem that night, full of fireworks. That was April 1980. I knew all about Operation Market Garden of course. I was always mindful of the war and occupation over 40 years later. And every day I crossed that bridge, I ALWAYS remembered the lives sacrificed trying to take it in order to end the war by Christmas. I was just a dumb kid from Southern California. Still am at 60. And I still cry at the whole waste of life and lives foisted upon the world by the likes of Hitler, Stalin and Tojo

I took a summer off and drove around France, Italy and Denmark back in 1984. Visited the Normandy beaches one month before the 40th Anniversary of D-Day. Walked thru the cemetery for US soldiers who died that day. It was a sad and somber place.

Very interesting. Nice to have the British perspective.
My Uncle went over on D-Day and a little while later was up in The Netherlands during Operation Market Garden. He was a Captain in The Royal Engineers who helped the Canadians to ferry troops back across the river while the Krauts mortared and machine gunned the boats from the other side. He said it didn't worry him too much, he ignored the noise, because he had lost a lot of hearing in one ear after standing next to The Royal Artillery on D-Day +2 when they were shelling the Germans in Normandy. He said that the German positions were visible to him and the gunners, and (using binoculars) he watched the shells falling on their vehicles. He survived, came home, became an Architect and passed away in his 90th year.

I thought Band Of Brothers was a great TV series, one of my favourites of all time. But I can never understand why no-one has ever produced something equivalent from the many, many experiences that the British forces had during WW2. The history of the 5th Royal Tank Regiment alone would make a great TV series. They fought from the 1940 retreat from France, in N. Africa, into Normandy and on to Germany. Mark Urban's book on them is a great read.

The sad reality is that any mini series on the scale of Band of Brothers would require significant investment which would recoup that from the US market and the bulk of Americans have no interest or actually know the true story of the British contribution to WW2. I have heard of documentary series being screened in the US where the episodes that dealt with the British and Canadian contribution was removed and not shown. No wonder the Americans think they did it all themselves 🙄

    • @mattwood6485
      @mattwood6485 Před rokem +2

@@spannerpasser I think Brits believe we think that far more than we actually do. I'm a pretty big WW2 enthusiast and I would definitely notice if a documentary series omitted the Brits. I personally have never noticed that.
I think there is more interest than you would think here regarding the British WW2 experience. Dunkirk was very popular here and received numerous Academy award nominations. 1917 was likewise quite popular here.
If the British made a "Band of Brothers"- i'm pretty sure a lot of Americans would watch it.

I am a Vietnam era, USMC Veteran, but I stand in Awe of these Heroes who put Nazism down, whether they be Canadian, British, or American. All these men headed to Normandy knew full well of the potential to perish. To be told that by Eisenhower, and still run headlong into it. Commands Respect, no matter who.
My Dad, Lester B. Mashburn , the recipient of 4 campaign ribbons in WW2, passed away 13 yrs after the war.

American military history only concentrates on the US and not the significance contributions made by other countries. It doesn’t help when people like Stephen Ambrose, Cornelius Ryan and even Anthony Beevor write books without either corroboration or spin the narrative to suit the more lucrative American market and then that narrative is taken as gospel by the masses. It’s like the bit in Saving Private Ryan where Ted Dansons character says when told that Caen hadn’t yet been taken by the British and he replies that Monty’s overrated. How would a relatively junior officer in an American airborne division know anything about a British general other than a screenwriter falling for the usual and accepted tripe about the British failing to take Caen on DYa even though it actually wasn’t a DDay objective. Even the most cursory glance at books about the battle would explain the opposition was the bulk of the German armour in Normandy unlike the Americans who faced 2 panzer divisions and still failed to take St Lo on DDay which was an objective.

For those who don't know - The German bazooka teams were very hard to deal with and were often considered as bad or worse than the German tanks. Anyone "managing" multiple teams successfully would have had to do an almost incredible job. To survive, in an easy target like a tank, and achieve that is pretty astonishing.

Great video, honestly love alot of these forgotten engagements. Theres a fantastic book called Kampfgruppe Walther and Panzerbrigade 107. It explains the battlegroups history and cover both allied and axis sides brilliantly. It states that the "tanks" engaged outside Opwetten were from the support company of Panzergrenadier Abteilung 2107 (Hauptmann Wild KIA 23.09.44) of PzBr 107. The vehicles were Sdkfz.251 "stummel" (halftracks with short 75mm guns) and all German tanks in that AO were Panthers of Panzer Abtielung 2107 (Major von Plüskow KIA 23.09.44) PzBr 107. The 19th-20th in my honest opinion was a bigger loss for Panzer Brigade 107 (Major Von Maltzahn) as 7 Panthers had been total losses and unknown others damage.

An absolutely brilliant video, so informative and one which pays the due respect to all who took part, Brits and Yanks alike. It is fantastic to see such work put together properly without any of the lazy "stock" images that are so often thrown in to accommodate verbal descriptions, but which don't actually correspond with what's being said (eg: the commentator mentions a Mk4 Pkw and the image pops up of a Tiger. You get my gist - not particularly important to the overall story, but annoying to those that recognise the difference and want accuracy). Well done guys, a great piece of work - it really explains comprehensively, the events surrounding this battle, with an accuracy of fact that very often seems to evade Spielberg and co... A great video, thanks so much. We will remember them.

The band of brothers was a good story, but that's all. I can't stand Ambrose he told an unforgivable lie besmirching a Royal Navy landing craft Coxswain who he said refused to take the troops close enough to Omaha beach until he was forced to by gun point. This was an utter lie and when challenged about it just waived it off. The other gripe is a bit in the Band of Brothers story when a soldier asked: 'what Monty was doing in Caen' the reply came back 'not much'. Call me old fashioned but that really gets on my nerves. Monty's Canadian and British lads were confronting 8 SS Panzer divisions, Hitler jugund and SS division whilst the yanks faced just 2 Panzer Divisions in Normandy. Can the yanks for once just cut Monty some slack ....even after 75 years they're still sticking the knife in.

Victor Newman Nigel Hamilton's theory is that the some American Generals in WWII were keen to discredit Monty and by association the performance of Anglo Canadians to cover up their incompetence in my view this has some credence. When you consider that the American disaster at Hurtegen resulted in 34,000 casualties and decimated eight American divisions in the process for no tactical or strategic purpose or the Bulge which caught the yanks napping with 75,000 casualties and prisoners of war. A battle that forced Ike (who detested Montgomery) to take two American armies away from Bradly and place them under Monty's command - you wonder if Nigel Hamilton is on to something.

JJ Brooks let this sink in for a minute. 2500 British soldiers died fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. Hardly anyone knows this and it's ignored. Elements of XXX Corp fought a battle to stop German battle group Bohm's crossing of the Meuse. Americans always talk about Patton relieving Bastogne, but the pivotal battles were being fought in the north which is never discussed because Monty was placed in charge of that area as Bradley had lost control and the embarrassment of the 1st US Army Cmdr Hodges having a mental breakdown and refusing to see anyone. Hodges also abandoned his HQ in a panic. Monty had to literally go over to his HQ to see him, look him in the eyes and get him to pull himself together.
Patton he was a classic got 54,000 men killed or injured attacking a fort in Metz held by cadets and Volks grenadiers. He was good at chasing stragglers or liberating large tracts of empty space away from important strategic military areas. I could go on about him ...but I got to go now.

The British were still fighting WW 2 with weapons of WW 1 and the Yanks blaming Montgomery. They don't make a movie about the 'Peel Region' the Yanks came out 2nd best and the British saved the day with their superb 25 Pounders. The British artillery was up to date their infantry weapons and armour was not. Also people blame the M 4 Sherman tank and also the Cromwell in comparison to German armour. The truth is even the 30 ton allied tanks were too heavy for the Netherlands and the allied tanks were restricted to stay on the roads which made them vulnerable for ambushes. Nothing but respect for the allied effort and that includes the Yanks there is no need to lie about it. You guys were facing a skilled and determined enemy which was the cause of some setbacks and leave incompetence out of it. The men who paid the contribution don't deserve this.

Don’t perceive this as a slight towards England, I’m not sure any single nation could have took on Germany in those days. So before you get twisted with this comment, read and listen to books and documentaries about the many failed attempts that the Americans pulled the Britts out of. The American army had their asses whipped in the Netherlands in 1944 and the fact that they controlled the movie industry post world war 2 doesn't change it. The Nijmegen objective was taken too late, Gavin managed it with support of the XXX Corps. It is the American attitude to blame anything British, the locals know better. By the way I am a British subject for the last 50 years. The American industry made a fortune out of WW 2 with their lend and lease. WW 2 the Americans paid a very big contribution with too many lives lost. You had superb artillery, communication and logistics. The 101 and 82th airborne were superb infantry. I just get sick of the attitude of rubbishing your allies by blaming them for the set backs. You faced at the time a very skillful enemy. Yes I would like to see more British war movies to have a different perspective to what had actually had happened. The TV series of Band Of Brothers from watching it may have been grossly exaggerated as for an action movie. When watching Band Of Brothers actually made me feel really bad because from the actual battle account from the veterans really pains me is that these men who fought against the enemy really died in combat for both British and American. One movie which I consider a classic from a long time ago was a British production of the Bridge Too Far. That brought tears to my eyes and inspirational. The British Paratroopers that jumped into Arnhem truly deserves my respect because I am formerly retired American Paratrooper. As a Paratrooper we are trained to fight surrounded as Major Winters stated in Band of Brothers. This is true in the spirit of selection of men to be Paratroopers in the British Army. In fact their selection is harder than what I went through in the Ft. Benning style of training. My training at Ft. Benning Airborne School has not changed very much since WWII when I went through in 1986. That movie The Bridge Too Far just watching it no matter after its release. Seeing the British casualties of Paratroopers fighting and getting killed really bothered me. To me the British Armed Forces are still the best in the world, highly motivated, highly dedicated, and professional. The only difference is the US Armed Forces is much bigger. Today the US Army has for Airborne Forces has one Airborne Division the 82nd Airborne, Two Airborne Brigades, the 173rd in Italy and 4th Brigade 25th Infantry in Alaska. All units have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003 till present. Truly commend the British Army for their courage and valor. Even my Dad was in the last years of WWII and his duration in Korea the British Army fought alongside the US. Even my tour in Iraq I was privileged to meet British soldiers in Basra Iraq operating sector moving up and down Iraq and sideways too. I would love to see the British side of things to be more well rounded as how they did in combat.

Stephen Ambrose seemed to relish any opportunity to portray British servicemen as: incompetent, lazy, stupid and cowardly. Regardless of what American servicemen told him. The most notorious incident was when he claimed that on D-day at Omaha beach a British sailor refused to take his Landing craft all the way in due to cowardice. And an American officer had to threaten the sailor at gunpoint to make him go in. Ambrose claimed the account came from American serviceman Bob Sales of the 116th regiment who was on the craft and the only survivor. When he heard of this Bob Sales furiously wrote in to said he had said no such thing to Ambrose and that he had just made that up. But even when found out Ambrose refused to change it or apologise.
