    It's a tough job for them. Considering the safety of players is key, they just are trying to find out where to draw the line of what they'll allow. You can't just waive risk completely and say "they know what they're signing up for" or else people would literally die playing the game if safety wasn't being considered. Talking about the consistency of the MRC is a separate point, we all know the flaws there. But what they're trying to do is find where they're going to draw a line of allowance on the spectrum of safety, which is really tough and will take time.

      One way to make the game really safe, would be to hang tags off the players waists, that way we can rip the tags off instead of tackling. Then the only time someone gets a booboo will be if an outright accident happens. And in that case, we shoot the player who doesn't get injured, and then everyone is happy.

    What was all the talk about after SOO3?
    It was the aggressive tackling and the biff between Gagi n Burton. Rated one of the best origins ever.
    It's what both players and fans want.
    Rugby league is a contact sport. People watch it for that reason. I don't see touch footy bringing in the $.
    Blatant violence should be dealt with not accidental. As Cam Smith said the players understand the risk and is one of the reasons they play it. They love the aggression.

    • @ganilau4214
      @ganilau4214 Před rokem

      It’s all well and good to say the players accept the risk but in 10 years time it’ll be the same players who take the NRL to court for being complacent. We see the same thing happen in the NFL and now rugby union with players suing because they’re unable to remember their children’s names.

    • @wallyelephant6732
      @wallyelephant6732 Před rokem

      @@ganilau4214 So why play the game if you already know the risk? To most people it's because they love the game and are prepared to take the risk.
      One of my best mates was going to be one of the greats until he received 8 concussions in 1 season. He summed up the risk and retired at 20.
      Are the players educated by the NRL of the risks to their future health? Surely they must be.
      Any thing we do in life involves risk. Do we stop living just in case we get hurt?
      It sounds like a lawyer problem that they need fix in regards to being sued.
      Maybe I'm being naive here but surely a contract stating that any injuries now and in the future are at your own risk including mental issues.

    • @ganilau4214
      @ganilau4214 Před rokem

      @@wallyelephant6732 it’s hard to take the player’s consent when they’re motivated by a hefty salary. That’s why the governing body is put in charge in the first place. Even if players accept the risk, the NRL has a duty of care not only to the current NRL players but the grassroots as well. If that was the case what would stop the NRL from forcing players to decide between signing or forfeiting their contracts. We would end up in a game where players eventually had little to no say on their safety.

    • @wallyelephant6732
      @wallyelephant6732 Před rokem

      @@ganilau4214 I understand that players safety is important but why at the same time do they unofficially promote the aggression and biff in the game.
      For example Gagai n Burton received a very small fine for punches that have killed people in pub fights yet in the same breath they give a guy 2 weeks for accidentally hitting the head of an opponent. (Finucane on Crichton).
      What should happen with the game is developing it to where the law fits the game in duty of care. At the moment it doesn't seem that way.
      The NRL are afraid to lose their crowd support but at the same time don't want law suits but in reality they should reach common ground with safety rules first. Change the rules of the game then promote that product. It's seems to me they are too scared to try that.

    Everyone clearly just wants some consistency and to know where the line is. Abdo did admit that there is inconsistency but failed to explain the way forward to gain consistency in his view. There is no doubt that the game has changed to make player safety a higher priority. However, taking the physicality out of the game by penalising players for aggressively defending with acceptable technique and intent, which may lead to accidental injury, and which in itself represents an acceptable risk of the game itself creates doubt and confusion.

    Gus talking about it as if they're just playing for fun and not in a proper organised competition. Of course you can still go hard, but the players are also at work. So there must be a level of safety at their workplace, or else why are they there? Yes they get payed well, so they should expect reasonable protection while staying inside the rules of the game.

    When I was growing up my mates and I would always talk about the big hits and the fights that broke out over the weekend. I don't particularly care about "miraculous" wing tries that always need to be looked at by big brother to determine whether there's a Higgs boson between the grass and the players body, that isn't interesting to me.
    Player safety in full contact sports should be very simple, if you don't want serious injuries and life affecting ailments after retirement I suggest you play a different game.
    I prefer watching my local competition over the NRL, less stress and strain on all involved.

    Change the mrc to highly trained rugby league players that aren’t talked down by lawyers or whatever else. Review all the rules and have them set in stone to the ref so they can’t #### it up Every game and possibly get a defining key moment in the game wrong.
    Abdo tried to swerve away from Gus’s questions but they both have valid reasons. The game needs to change to where they want it and keep it at that.

    If people have been watching league for a 100 years I'd say they were mostly happy with the game was played and run, so why the constant tinkering by administrators? They dont play the game, the players do and this smacks of administrators making changes for changes sake just to justify their jobs. There were already rules, no spear tackles, no head highs, no feet first tackles (yes I've seen these) etc. The angling towards a litigation proof game is quite obvious to me and it's not why we all played.
