  • The NRL360 desk witnessed a passionate debate between some of the game’s best-known journalists following the $20,000 fine for Penrith coach Ivan Cleary.
After his side won their eighth straight game on Saturday, Cleary made a remark that landed him in hot water.
Despite a comfortable win over the Raiders, Cleary suggested that the officials had attempted to give Canberra a leg-up.

Ian P - Football Reporter there is some aspect of match fixing in it , I could show you hundreds of matches - every game so many grey areas
      Loose carry/ stripping
      Scrums

It’s all how the individual interprets it
      Not a set of rules

      I'll have a go.
Integrity basically implies honesty. And for players and coaches to publicly call referees dishonest - cheats - is insulting the referee. Why do they deserve to be insulted and called dishonest ??

    • @youbetzler
      @youbetzler Před 3 lety +3

@@TheNewcastleKnight what if they are dishonest? i mean the ref in the grand final last year claimed he never waved 6 again despite clear video evidence that he did. Referees in other sports have been caught fixing games and there's plenty of match fixing going on in rugby league so to assume it's never happened with the most influential person on the field is proposterous.
The reason it's not ok is not because the refs don't deserve it, they often do. Some of the calls they make are either blatant cheating or incompetence of embarassing proportions. The reason it's wrong is because coaches are technically employees of the NRL and for an employee to publicly accuse other employees of match fixing is just bad for business all the way around.

I don't always agree with Kenty, but he's 100% on to it here. We've seen several times, the second half ref makes more calls in favor of the losing team. I don't think it makes the NRL the WWE in its matches but for sure there is a sub-conscious bias in the second half. Or even sometimes, the ref is absolutely out to get certain players with bad reputations, it isn't a deliberate witch hunt, they are just looking harder for certain things to penalize at certain times.
Also, why can't we question the integrity of the refs? They're supposed to have the highest levels of honesty and integrity. If they've done nothing wrong they wouldn't be upset when people come out and attack them.
We know the refs are dodgy, they make mistakes and there are some ridiculous statistics when you start looking at the patterns between which referee is paired with which teams and the correlating win percentages. THERE IS AN INTEGRITY PROBLEM

There was a single call that did it for me.
It was in the second half. Canberra kicked the ball into the corner, was going dead, and it was (I think) Cotric batted it back in, and it hit Mansour who was had a foot on the dead in goal line. Bunker called Panthers drop out. Go back a week, and an almost identical call in the Roosters vs Titans. Tedesco bats the ball back, into Ash Taylor who had a foot on the line, 20m restart. So which one is it?
Another call that went against Penrith. The Liam Martin, Jordan Rapana call. They deemed that the tackle was done the moment the ball touched the ground. If Rapana drops the ball backwards, the touchies flag stays down, and say, Jack Wighton dives on the ball. It is play on and we never hear about it again. But because Martin say Rapana trying to offload, he helped him over the sideline.

They ARE stage managing games and everyone knows it. It's obvious and it's been happening for years.

....I think the refs should be fined for the BAD decisions that they make when it costs a team a win, .....its happened again this season a few times !!!

No one sees any freedom of speech issues here!? Fined for voicing his opinion!? Head coach or not.. how else would issues „present or not“ be addressed if everyone is scared to criticise due to an authoritarian like fine!

The reffs do help teams back into matches to keep viewers watching. It’s all about money. Views = $$$ its corruption from the top. All about viewers. Closer games = more people tuned in to that channel and more bums in seats , which again = $$$. The reffs are very controlled and know what they’re doing. Because they’re getting more $$$ too.

Hoops you are a muppet.... compare this with Fonua Blake and see what you think..... you seem to forget the fact the last 2 years there hasn’t been a round we haven’t had a blunder from refs.... including the GF last year..... why don’t Referees get penalised and fined when they make errors..... Ivan is paid to coach panthers .... press conferences are the last place he wants to be.... how about we hold the refs accountable.
