      Gus practically putting gal back in his place. I often wonder about gal sometimes with his opinions and how he interprets certain situations according to how he sees things. I do think there are times where gal needs to keep his place in certain situations where there's a disagreement or conflicting views on how a rule is interpreted by the NRL. In my opinion, gal can get a bit hot headed on certain topics when discussing issues on 100% footy. He can be a bit of a smart-arse at times but all in all he's a great bloke and a great legend of the modern game.

      The momentum of the tackle caused gutho to go from shoulder to arm/ball. He wasn't "playing" at it.
      Also at the point the ball comes loose from Liddle it touches gutho. Which a lost flat ball is still a knock on.
      A better example would have been when a player plays the ball, places it on the ground and misses it with his foot and walks forward.
      That's a knock on and the ball doesn't go forward. Same as this, it comes out as it's contacting gutho.

    I can't believe the amount of people saying knock on. It goes backwards after a strip? How is that in any world a knock on? Tackler rakes the ball out, it doesn't matter if it was an intentional action, he grabbed at it because he couldn't grab at anything else and he pulled it free, and it went backwards. It gets picked up, they score. That is four points every time.

      Gus uses '91 GF Laurie Daley example... it is EXACTLY the same as the situation with the Eels, except instead of Gutho collecting the ball, St George did... Gus's own argument was that it should have been play on (exactly as Gal said), therefore the try should have been awarded...

      @@effkay3691 That does not matter. Forward, backward, sideways, Gutho is stripping the ball which means he's playing at the ball. It's not a loose carry so even if the ball went forward, Gutho playing at the ball makes it 6 more for the Dragons and the try should have been awarded.

    • @johnnysoccer1983
      @johnnysoccer1983 Před 9 měsíci

      Firstly, the ball was still moving forwards before it hit the ground, and bounced backwards. It's not by a lot, it went backwards relative to the runner, but that doesn't mean it went backwards relative to the field of play. Secondly, if it's deemed a loose carry, which is should be, the moment possession of the ball was lost if it touches or is touching an opposing player and it's still travelling forward, that's already a knock-on before it even gets below the runners waist.

I originally thought the introduction of The Bunker (stupid name btw) could be helpful but nowadays it over analyses every minute detail. Just use it to see if a try has been scored legitimately and let the ref decide everything else- maybe even the touch judges could do a bit to help as well! I know I know many will counter that the game is a lot faster now & we must protect the players (which I’m all for) but seriously if the game continues with all this they should just make it Touch Football! Tipped !!

    Gus is right and Gallen does not respect the basic principles of the game - ball security being foundational.This is actually how it always used to be. Modern variations of the stripping rule appeared when some players took advantage of racking a ball when there were multiple tacklers. Gus also said that the ball runner was responsible for holding on to the ball. I imagine that if all the permutations and rule adjustments keep happening then it will all be as confusing as the ruck rules in Rugby Union...no one fully understands those.

    Let's take a closer look at the ball carrier in this incident.
    The ball was loosely held in front of his body when he lost the ball.
    A dropped ball in this instance is, and always will be, a knock on.
    The ball carriers momentum gives the false impression that the ball was lost backwards.
    Had the tackling side gathered in the ball it would have been play on.

      100% agree with this. At the point the ball comes out, it contacts gutho. Which makes the ball going "backwards" irrelevant. At best it's dead flat and still constitutes a knock on or dropped ball.
      No different from playing the ball and no foot touching it. That's a knock-on. Ball didn't travel forward there.

    • @jacobthorpe4316
      @jacobthorpe4316 Před 9 měsíci +7

      Incorrect.
      Liddle still had an arm wrapped around the ball tucked into his body. Gutho has his hand on the ball and makes a clear stripping motion. At no point does it fit the definition of a loose carry. The ball was stripped, Dragons player picks it up and scores, that's a try. Even if the ball went forward, it was a strip by Gutho which means he's playing at the ball and it's 6 more for the Dragons which still makes the try a try.
      A loose carry is when a player loses possession of the ball without the tackler playing at the ball which was not the case in this one.
      The people saying it's a knock on and a no try, you're wrong. Plain and simple.

      I recommend a thorough reading of the NRL laws of the game.
      And this goes for everyone thinking the referee got it wrong.
      Section 11.8: If, after being tackled, he accidentally loses possession, a scrum shall be formed except after the fifth play-the-ball.
      Notes: If a tackled player loses possession of the ball at the moment of impact with an opponent or with the ground, play shall proceed unless stopped
      for some other reason
      Section 11.9a The ball can be stolen from the player in possession at any stage prior to a tackle being complete when there is only one defender
      effecting the tackle.
      In a nutshell a tackler can attempt to steal the ball before the completion of the tackle. The ball carrier is responsible for ball security, failure to do so and the ball is lost will result in a scrum to the opposition.
      In part I was incorrect, knock on is not actually relevant, it is the loss of the ball in the tackle.

      @@jacobthorpe4316 the momentum of the tackle forced his arm down from shoulder to his hand. That's not a stripping motion.
      Yes I'd say if he was still standing and doing that I'd say it was stripping. But it wasn't intentional.

    Umpires can change the course of a game and they do it all the time and they do it especially if it looks like one sided affair. Look at the Rabbitos vs the Sharks in Perth where the majority of crowd were Rabbitos supporters, omg the Sharkies are winning and the NRL money making venture to Perth looked in jeopardy. Another example I heard on 4BC radio the other night where a senior umpire is talking to a field umpire and he tells him that the last six penalties have gone to one side and to be aware of that fact... why would he say that ?.

    I honestly think if your tackling someone front on and go for strip and ball comes loose should be a strip 6 again, if your tackling from the side or behind, and the ball comes loose that should be considered as a loose carry, knock on. You lost the ball easy. Might be hard to ref that but at least there’s some sort of understanding on the ruling on it. It’s annoying for fans and obviously Gus and gal 😂

    Gus has little clue, at least based on this. The strip rule is a pain, but much better than thr alternative... Having lived in an era where little halfbacks (like Alfie Langer) used to steal the ball when there was 2 or 3 others in the tackle, it was horrible to watch, leave the rule the way it is, even wih confusion its better than it used to be

    Gus might need to go get his eyes checked. How the hell anyone could possibly try to say that's not a strip is beyond me. He literally reaches straight for the ball (don't give me some BS about he was "reaching for the shoulder and slipped" that's utter bollocks) grabs the ball, and rips it out.

  • @cvarikos
    @cvarikos Před 9 měsíci +2

    The only thing I can think of is in the process of raking ... the ball went forwards (in the air) but then bounced back so it gave the illusion of going backwards. Its a hard gig as a referee because these guys get 2-3 days to ponder, analyse decisions ... the boys in the box get 1 minute and many times it isn't as straightforward as Gus suggests.

    • @jacobthorpe4316
      @jacobthorpe4316 Před 9 měsíci +1

      It doesn't matter if it goes backward or forward. Gutho stripping the ball means he's playing at the ball so it's not a loose carry. Even if the ball goes forward, Gutho playing at the ball makes it 6 more for the Dragons and the try still should have been awarded.

    I agree with Gus, its a damn knock on, regardless if the player has taken one or two steps, I dont get half of the new rules, Im 69, played footy from J Grade up to Seniors, today its like Im watching a totally different game, the way the game is going, what use to be a 80 minute game will eventually be a 3 hour game, like American Football.
