Can Russian assets be seized to rebuild Ukraine?

  • There is no end in sight to the human cost and economic toll from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The World Bank and the European Commission have estimated that the total cost of reconstruction of Ukraine has surpassed $400 billion. Other institutions have gone as far as predicting a $1 trillion bill.
The European Union is looking at how to use frozen Russian assets in the region to help pay for the rebuilding of Ukraine. Anders Ahnlid, a Swedish official chairing these discussions, told CNBC there are many steps before money can be transferred to Kyiv, but they are working to do that as soon as possible.
“We know that there is more than 200 billion euros in Russian central bank’s assets in European countries. And in addition to that, there is also around 20 billion euros of private frozen assets,” Ahnlid said.
Even though the conflict is ongoing, which complicates the rebuilding efforts, Ukraine hopes to attract international support from other governments and private investors.
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink agreed to coordinate investment in rebuilding the country. At least two international conferences have also been organized to increase contributions to Ukraine, including $57 billion dollars pledged by the EU and the U.K. In addition, Ukraine has also signed a deal with JPMorgan to help support the rebuilding efforts.
Watch the video above to find out how Kyiv plans to rebuild the country.

The problem wil be that Middle East countries like Iraq, Libiya, Afghanistan, Vietnam and others victims of US and Uk agression wars in the past could confiscate US and Western assets in the same way as compensation of their US unpaid war debts.

    • @MrMarinus18

Actually the main problem in Iraq and Afghanistan was that companies were allowed to run unchecked and they embezzled most of the funds for the rebuilding or didn't allow domestic companies as they saw them as competition. This meant that rather than help build up a thriving economy they actively sabotaged this so that they could keep receiving "reconstruction" money for as long as possible.
We have to avoid this problem with Ukraine. If we use our own companies to rebuild Ukraine there is a big problem of conflict of interest. Those companies would want to keep the Ukrainian economy down for as long as possible cause once the Ukrainian economy can fend for itself they will stop receiving funds.

Germany and Japan were already industrialized before the war. They just rebuilt their economies using their prior-knowledge and skill.
As for South Korea, Japan spent a lot of money and effort on Korean education system, healthcare, governance, legal system, and infrastructure...duplicating everything that worked in Japan. And the Korean elite were mostly educated in Japan, so they already had the necessary tools and skills.
Ukraine was one of the poorest countries in Europe before the war. Unlike the Baltic nations, it's one of the post-Soviet countries that struggled in the transition to a market-economy and democracy. Corruption and income inequality was a problem...which is really strange because Ukraine used to be one of the more developed regions during the Soviet period.

Yeah that is if we follow it. The US let companies run wild in Iraq and Afghanistan and they completely failed. Many think the US didn't spend money to rebuild Iraq and this is false. The US spend tens of billions but it was all embezzled by US companies.
The biggest thing we have to make sure is that the money to rebuild Ukraine is not swallowed up by parasitic companies. We need to use Ukrainian construction companies wherever possible even if they aren't the ideal ones, we need to give money directly to the poor of Ukraine and we also need an economic plan and empower the government to execute it.
These 3 things were the main reason most argue are why the rebuilding of Germany was a success and the rebuilding of Iraq was not. The use of domestic companies to boost the domestic workforce and economy, the giving of money to the poor to create more social stability and increase consumption power and the empowering of the central government to create a smooth running economy for the country and stop companies from sabotaging their rivals to gain more funds.
If there isn't a Ukrainian company that can do what we want then we need to set up a Ukrainian state company to do the job. Maybe we can privatize it later but we should absolutely avoid trying to use a western company. Ukraine must rebuild itself and we are only there to give it the tools and resources to do so.

Unfortunately there is a big problem which is that corporations have managed to infiltrate the European conservative movement. Family values and community are not really compatible with the production of obedient worker drones and a consumption culture.
In Israel this corruption of conservatism by big money just didn't happen.
Many European conservative parties are hated not for their conservative values but because they argue for unchecked capitalism. Many conservatives see unchecked capitalism and consumption culture as the biggest threat to old values and traditional European culture. So there kind of is a problem for many social conservatists.
