Shit gets even weirder when you find out more about Dom Pedro II. For instance, he was an abolitionist, and actually was the one who got Brazil to ban slavery in 1888, in spite of significant political resistance. And it was not like he had a change of heart resulting in him becoming an abolitionist after having previous supported the Confederacy, he was an abolitionist the entire time.
He also ended up being overthrown despite massive public support. And he took absolutely no steps against the coup that overthrew him, because he resented being an Emperor anyway.
What a Chad
He must've genuinely felt empathetic for the people who were affected by the war while also seeing an opportunity to help develop the Brazilian economy pretty ingenious move from Pedrinho.
Thanks for giving Pedro II the credit for banning slavery. A bunch of people just credit it to Princess Isabel, because she was the one who signed the Áurea Law, but often ignore that Pedro was the one who organized the whole thing, and that he would have signed it himself if he could. He had been trying to ban slavery for a very long time, but the parliament that kept blocking his attempts. The best he managed at first was the Eusébio de Queirós Law that banned international slave trade.
As for the Civil War, it is true that he supported the Confederacy, but he also showed some support for the Union, so I feel his position was more neutral than anything. Abraham Lincoln has even declared that if it ever came to the point where he was forced to come to an agreement with the Confederacy to settle, Dom Pedro II would have been his choice for mediator, but it never came to that.

Google "Gramado Brazil", and "Foz do Iguaçu"
Try searching for "procissão do fogaréu goiás"
Brazil is bigger than the continental US. There is a fucking lot to see.
allot each brasialian state is like it's own country with it's own culture and historical landmarks and places to visit i recommend staying away from large cities and the favelas as they are the actually bad parts of the country in general as long you research the region and avoid turist traps like Rio de janeiro your going to have a enjoyable experience
Search about Paraná and the Brazilian south, also, the northwest of brazil has plenty of cool stuff too
As a Tennessee man, slightly disappointed this is just about Brazil. It's okay, I guess.
No one tell her about The Boys from Brazil.
confederate history is pretty interesting, did you know the Natives and the Confederate were allies? and that the Union and Confederate didn't really hate eachother that much and had a mutual respect? that alone is pretty wild considering the war and everything.
I always thought the Conf and Union were just a two political compass but apparently I was wrong, its two different socio-economy and culture altogether
Everyone hated President Lincoln, and wanted him gone in one form or another. The ones who wrote the glowing reports on his reputation were the ones who benefited the most from the dictator.
Well, there was tension, especially when the Union invoked scorched earth tactics at President Lincoln's command.
Relations between the north and south got much worse AFTER the war because of how the attrocities committed by the leaders north after the south had already surrendered.
And yes you're correct that significantly more American Indians sided with the South.
@@benito1620 oh please Reconstruction wasn't nearly harsh enough on the South given what the Southerners did to start and further this war. To start with, it only ended slavery nominally, and left oh so many of the rich racist elites from wartime unpunished or even in charge as the Klan and other lynch mobs just swelled in power. There should have been something more akin to the Nuremberg trials after the Confederacy had capitulated. Carpetbaggers my ass.
Lincoln was a tyrant and General Sherman was a war criminal let that be known as a fact.
Also the North are the ones who wanted to keep slavery while the South had politicians lobbies against it, it was not just a close vote but they had BLACK slaveowners come to the discussion to talk about the merits of the slave trade.
I live in the south of Brazil, it's actually mainly German colonies (many rumored to be Yahtzeez escapees), and if you google Gramado Brazil, you will find one of the most beautiful cities you can find in Latin America.
It's actually very nice over here, nearly 1st world living standards.

It’s either that or give the black kids clean drinking water.
Looked it up, Americana stopped using slavery in 1888 because that's when the whole of Brazil abolished it and they had to follow along. I was honestly expecting some suitably weird story to go along with the rest of the place like -- I dunno -- the whole city getting bored of the idea like a teenager losing interest after they realize the parent isn't getting angry at their behavior any more.
Guys, don't let this confederate thing fool you. We Brazilians love blacks...
A real shame they stopped selling them. 😂

I wonder if this is how japan feels on western weeb culture lmfao 😂
Japanese people love sphaghetti westerns so much, there's conventions dedicated to the old west complete with cosplay.
@@JimmyCougar Westerns are pretty much similar to their old Samurai flicks in a way. A lot of fights end in a single, quick stroke/shot duel, A wanderer wandering into a town and ending up taking on some thugs, etc
Japan and Brazil also a close relationship county btw
@@RaxusXeronos That's what inspired Star Wars. Of course, as you know, a lot of samurai movies have historical context, but I promise you that the sides that George Lucas rooted for ended up losing the war.

So, like, does this technically mean that all the jokes about five-year-old things lasting longer than the Confederacy no longer applies?
i'm usually mad that Brazil keeps getting more attention than portugal but now i can take solace that it's probably my country's greatest failed experiment. in a totally unrelated note, Pippa should use her vtuber clout to colonize Brazil, they would benefit from the new management
Idk but all I know is that our Spanish neighbour make more money than us, pay less taxes, rent costs less and gas costs less, our government are clowns. Portugal is cool for tourism compared to overrated places like Paris but besides that the only reason I have to stay here is my family
actually the opposite Brazil was more successful than Portugal at some point is just a certain group went made coup d'etat and destroyed the country because a certain princess ended slavery
honestly it doesn't take much to be more sucessful than portugal these days
Brazil is the Florida of South America at this point.

Brazil putting the South in South America
It’s always funny to find real versions of the trope of “misunderstands a part of the US and builds a culture around it.”
Fun fact, there’s a remote village in the South Pacific that had care supplies dropped on it by planes decades ago, and now they worship the planes and stuff like gods. Look up Vanuatu
It’s not really misunderstanding as the city was populated by confederates after they lost.

Why does Brazil do this?
Remember true diversity means accepting absolutely everyone. Even if that everyone includes confederates and yahtzees.
That's kinda how you end up with the intolerant people taking advantage of the tolerant diversity to take over and then getting rid of that diversity though?
Free speech means allowing words and ideas that absolutely disgust you. Approved speech is not free.
@@MoreEvilThanYahweh yes, but you know the "paradox of tolerance"? If you let enough people start openly recruiting people to a hateful cause and threatening, say, another race or orientation with their rhetoric, you'll eventually get to the point where those words and that feeling of hateful solidarity will lead to actual violent crimes against the poeple they're speaking out against. That's why hate speech laws exist in almost all democracies, because absolutely tolerating too much hate speech will lead to a rise in hate crimes.
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 Yet we see where exactly that's led. I remember supporting such laws being applied to muslims after 9/11 thanks to mass hysteria.
It's not perfect, but that applies to a lot of things in life. We don't regulate cars to high heavens despite the fact it's hilariously easy to run over dozens of people at certain gatherings.
At the end of the day, curbing free speech benefits authoritarians of various flavors via selective or creative interpretations of what constitutes hate speech far more than any risks from the radicalised.
Particular when many states already have laws covering people getting together to commit terrorism, overthrow the government, etc. independent of speech restrictions.
It's also a problem with the society and it's own fitness if they can't stop bad ideas from reaching critical mass from simply confronting them with opposing viewpoints or attack the underlying issues that cause support for such ideologies.
@@anonymouslypseudonymous2060 gee I wonder who else does that nowadays..
Brazil is a mess, in a good and bad way.
