I worked in a hospital before RvW. Several women a week came into our ER suffering from a septic illegal abortions, we barely saved some. After RvW, I never saw another one in the rest of my 46 years in medicine. Imagine that.
There's no such thing as a "safe" abortion. It's a complete myth. And even if there are no physical effects there is often enormous psychological damage.
Well the "pro-lifers" would argue that the woman deserves death 🤷♂️
Oh, they've thought of that: several states have laws to punish women for having abortions. So they won't come to you until it's too late.
Although I knew these were the conditions before RvW, and still are in many other countries without adequate healthcare for women, this text made want to cry.
Oh my gosh! WOW. That's like the drug addicts that are harmed by self-treating when the medical system fails to give in and give them drugs illegally. What a shame. We should let them get addicted to legal drugs so the hospitals make money. Human lives are not worth anything unless you're irresponsibly having fun and destroying lives while the money keeps floating up! AMIRITE!? hahaha Why bother with sex education and expecting adults to be responsible for their bodies and to consider the impact of their actions? I think based on that "logic" we should also not penalize drunk drivers etc. If they kill someone/ a pet; that person/pet should have not been such a nuisance and inconvenience. That poor drunk driver that is a victim of the person they run over. OMG IT's horrendous. What will society come to if we don't protect people that just wanna have fun???
It should be nothing short of _alarming_ that Clarence Thomas provided a freaking *WISH LIST* of rulings he wants to overturn next!

The fact that these justices still get to sit and make sweeping decisions for other people after flat-out lying in their confirmation hearings (aka committing perjury) is maddening. The fact that Clarence Thomas still gets to act as though he's fit to serve when his wife was caught engaging in sedition, which should completely disqualify him as an unbiased judge. This system is deeply, fundamentally broken. It beggars belief.
Just to be clear, they didn't commit perjury. It wasn't a court of law. Were they even under oath?

Your rights too. They're infringing on your decisions to plan having a family or not, and the next step for the anti-abortion movement is to also ban contraceptives, something their bullshit birthing centers have been preaching for decades. Or imagine the unthinkable - you're soon to be a new parent only to be told by the doctors that your partner's pregnancy has become unviable, and when carried to term, your unborn child will likely die during childbirth, but worse yet, your partner could also die from severe complications. All because you live in a state that has written legislation that made no exceptions for miscarriages or the health of the mother. You could lose a wanted child along with your spouse all because a legislator thinks life begins at conception.
"Being held harmless" is actually the scary phrase here. They might as well say "held helpless." It means they don't want us in prison. They want us beholden and dependent on men. They want to own us.
300 mass shootings this year, no medical care, Patriot act and now this, America is a mess. Stay strong you good folks in the USA and reclaim your rights and freedoms.
Barely 2 days after the ruling a woman was emergency airlifted from Texas to Colorado because the hospital wasn't allowed to treat her. She went there for help from the agony and trauma of an Ectopic pregnancy and the doctors weren't allowed to provide lifesaving care for her because it was an abortion of a fetus, even though the fetus would never have been viable. This just shows that Republicans got what they wanted and now don't know what to do with it.

Completely shocked at the thinking of American lawmakers!!! Are they competing with the Taliban?? Do they not know that these rights and discussions were had about 6-7 decades ago across the world? How backward is the USA??? As an Australian and a Womens health professional, this is unbelievably shameful.
I'm not the first to say this, but from my perspective, the only thing that separates the Taleban from the Republican Party, is that the Taleban are brown-skinned muslims- if they were white Christians, then the GOP would be falling over themselves to make common ground with them.
Cry me a river
Why do you think they hated the Taliban so?
They disliked the competition for Americans to compare them to!
Next time on Christian Sharia Law Chronicles.....
Also some of the Republican majority states are so ass backwards that they are still stuck on the American Civil War which ended in the 1860's.
So if you think that 6-7 decades out of date is bad then you should set your wayback machine to a century earlier 😅

I dont think it is correct to assume that abortion was a big issue in either medieval times or Roman times. In general this wasn't a big issue until the evangelical movements made it one. Ben Franklin, for instance, wrote a book which providied (among other things) advice on how to get abortions safely (based on available medical knowledge of the times). I think, for the most part, abortions were just a part of life and what some people did.
Jonathan Taylor: A bit misleading, abortions were not "just a part of life", it was/is purposeful death of a child.
Actually in ancient Rome men would force women to kill their children in infanticide by leaving them out in the sun so they die of exposure. Other methods, such as abortion by starving oneself, in order to produce stillbirths, were also used. Usually this was because the man wanted only male sons. Christianity altered this by affording woman and their children human dignity. For this reason, many woman converted to Christianity(St Helen, St Monica) and slowly converted the state of the Roman Empire. Human dignity went from being a man's choice, to a protected good, and then to being a woman's choice in our modern times.
@@supercoolbrian you got a source for that? Sure sounds like christian propaganda to me.
Edit:. To be clear the thing I want backed up is the idea that men, on a regular basis, would FORCE women to kill their children. Methods are irrelevant and law of that time is pretty clear that abortion wasn't a crime.
Sidenote edit: I do find it funny that someone is claiming that Christianity gave women human dignity. Christianity which says women are less than men. Christianity which says that a woman who is raped gets to 'punish' the rapist by requiring them to pay the woman's father a dowry and then the rapist is 'forced' to marry the raped woman. Yeah.... Christianity is great at valuing women and isn't misogynistic at all *eye roll* I'm sure Christianity was a huge improvement to what they had before that in ancient Rome (in case you couldn't tell that's supposed to be dripping in sarcasm).
Plutarch in Lives: Lycurgus 16 writes that in State-controlled Sparta:
“Nor was it in the power of the father to dispose of the child as he saw fit (as was his right in most societies). He was obliged to carry (the newborn) child before certain men at a place called Lesche; these men were some of the elders of the tribe to which the child belonged; their business was to carefully view the infant, and, if they found it stout and well made, they gave order for its rearing and allotted to it one of the nine thousand shares of land above mentioned for its maintenance, but, if they found it puny and ill-shaped, ordered it to be taken to what was called the Apothetae (“depository”), a (large cave) under Mt. Taygetus (in the Peloponnese); as thinking it neither for the good of the child itself, nor for the public interest, that it should be brought up, if it did not, from the very outset, appear to be healthy and vigorous.”
By virtue of mentioning that old elders made the decision, its pretty clear women didn't have a choice in Roman Sparta. By expressing surprise that the father couldn't make the choice, its pretty clear that it was the norm in Roman law for the father to make the choice. All this is written of course by men. I'd be more surprised if you had proof that abortion was afforded specifically to a woman. In ancient Greece, Aristotle spoke about it as a matter compulsory law.
“As to exposing or rearing the children born, let there be a law that no deformed child shall be reared; but on the ground of number of children, if the regular customs hinder any of those born being exposed, there must be a limit fixed to the procreation of offspring, and if any people have a child as a result of intercourse in contravention of these regulations, abortion must be practiced on it (the child).”
My ex's brother and sister in law had to make the the worst choice in their lives when they decided, with the DR, to terminate the pregnancy. They were told that their son would suffer severe physical defects and more than likely wouldn't have lived through the birthing process. If he did survive his life would have been nothing but pain and nothing could be done to fix him. I'm not pro life (more like pro choice) but I would NEVER put my own standards on a life or situation that isn't my own. To think that a group of old men can tell a woman what do with her own body is beyond vile and this move screams of trying to control us. Those same men want to point their fingers at women who "didn't need to have sex" but where are the men because we don't get pregnant by ourselves. Where are the laws for the women who are left to deal with the fallout and have limited to no resources to make sure that that the child they were forced to bring to term has a good start in life? Now new generations of "free" women are going to be forced to fight all over again. Please stay strong and don't let this bullshit stand because I'm more than just a breeding machine because I was born with a uterus.
The men are legally responsible through child care, what are you even talking about? lmaoo 🤣 Talk about autonomy over your body when "your body, your choice" doesn't have you falling back on the slave labor of the father should you decide to keep it at a whim, instead of killed.
You're asked to carry it in your stomach for 9 months worst case scenario, and give it up at a fire station. Worst case scenario men end up paying for 18 years of childhood while their baby mama bangs their best friend.

I hope the word "immunities" apply to this case, so that the article 4 section 2 of US Constitution will protect those women in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and so on from being arrested and even from any sort of trial: "The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States."
Let's be honest, the USA has not been considered "the land of the free" by most free countries for quite a while. Now, I hope, more Americans will realise just how few liberties they actually have.
Yeah you got that right!

My daughter looked me in the eye, shrugged, and said her career and the ability to have a child when it's the right time for her was more important to her than some nasty old judges' religion and this ruling. She's decided never to date. Not even when she would like to be married, because who in this age wants to do marriage and then sex and she refuses to risk dating. She'll have a sperm donor when she wants a baby. I'm angry right with you. I wanted a son in law someday. But this is now her best choice. Making men obsolete and cut completely out of her life aside from friendship. And I have to wonder just how many other women will decide the same thing.

Here in Australia (where abortion is legal throughout the country, thank heavens), we're all shaking our heads in sadness & horror at this decision. You all need to get very ready to VOTE at the Midterms. But, a question - if the 3 SCOTUS Judges lied about their position on Rowe v Wade at their Confirmation Hearings, under oath, should they not be removed from their positions for perjury under oath? Any Constitution wiggle-room there folks? If men were the ones who got pregnant, then this would not be an issue. Stay strong, US folks!
They, unfortunately, didn't technically lie. They made statements that could have been interpreted to mean that they wouldn't overturn the rulings, but never actually said they wouldn't.

As a young teen I remember in the 70’s having to travel to another state to have an abortion-in the hospital the staff speaking horribly about me in Spanish not knowing I understood them. Years later as a married woman going through it again because my then husband didn’t want to have children, in the procedure room I told the doctor I changed my mind. He said sorry your husband signed the form-he pushed me back down the nurse injected me in my IV as I protested. I woke up hysterical. They had to take me out a side exit because I wouldn’t calm down. I’m in my late 60’s now- I will never ever forget it - his right over mine.
That is a terrible story. I'm so sorry you went through both of those experiences.

@musoui - perhaps you should read her comment again... she's saying that her HUSBAND (that 'good man', that 'true father') FORCED HER TO HAVE AN ABORTION.

I'm a Singaporean woman, and while a lot of people like to say our government is authoritarian and our people don't have any 'personal freedom', at least abortion is legal and widely accessible across the city, and has been for more than 50 years. Thank you for your thoughts, JumpingBeans. Just to be clear the ruling allows States to have their own laws, so in certain States, nothing will change. That being said, the whole thing is incomprehensible to me because I am challenged in naming a country where abortion is illegal. Even Catholic Ireland lifted its restrictions. Here's a thought: Whatever punishment is meted out to the mother for an newly 'illegal abortion' should also be meted out to the father . No exceptions.
Yes!
The problem with that is that the father never had rights before in abortions either - even when they want to prevent it for want to raise the child themselves they have zero power to prevent it.
You can't have it both ways - so if you want the father to have that responsibility, you have to afford him equal rights when abortion rights are returned.
Something tells me that few single women would support such a legislative change, and vocal feminists would scream the air black and blue until the very mention of it made conversation impossible.
Only if the father was for the abortion. There are a decent bumber of abortions that are instigated by the man and the woman is coerced agsinst her desire to keep the child. There are a decent number that are brought about fully mutually. And there are a decent number that are done by the woman against the man's desire to keep the child. In cases like the last kind, the man should be exempt.

There are two ways of analyzing the constitution. I studied this in college. Going after birth control next is terrifying. Not least because, quite aside from the entire dismantling of a woman’s right to her own body and sexual choices, medical practice uses the pill for a whole range of gynaecological conditions, including endometriosis, hormone imbalances and menorrhagia. Mostly because no one has bothered trying to come up with something else. If you have endo and want kids, you either suffer with the pain and haemorrhaging while you try to get pregnant, or you go on the pill and don’t have kids, those are your choices. I live in Ireland, and I never thought women here would have more rights than they do in the US. We fought tooth and nail to repeal the 8th and things still are not 100% there, but I feel so much safer here than I would in the US. My heart is broken for you.
It's often overlooked that birth contraceptives can have other uses. I couldn't take the pill, because it made my premenstrual migraines worse, but I did take the mini pill for a short time because I could tolerate it. There are so many options now available but to think that women in the US might have all of that taken away so easily.... Just being able to regulate your cycle helps women get on with their lifes and jobs, but I guess these zealots want them all barefoot and pregnant, chained to the kitchen sink for their entire fertile lives.
I don't think they'd get enough support to get rid of *most* forms of birth control, on a national level. However some states have already tried banning IUD's and morning after pills citing the life begins at conception and one of the ways they can function is to prevent implantation. Which while hard to fully study, research figures conservatively 10-40% of fertilized eggs don't implant. Beyond that 10-50% or more will miscarry. I wonder if they'll tell older women they shouldn't get pregnant, as the likelihood of miscarriage increases with age.
God, this whole thing is fucked up. First abortion, and then the mere idea of birth control? What are they even thinking? What right do they have to control something so personal? So now, not only can they decide that if an accidental pregnancy happens nothing can be done, but now they don't want people to be able to be safe if they DO have sex with their lover? This nation is fucked.
