  • PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR - Episode 48 - "Strike...Or Else!"
    In this week's show, all nine kids who went to the starting gate make the show in a unique 9-player stepladder finals. Each match begins with three players, but may or may not end with three players, as Coach Randy throws another twist at the kids. In "Strike...Or Else!" if two players throw a strike on the first ball in a frame and the other player fails to match their strikes, then the player who fails to strike faces instant elimination from the match.
    USBC Silver Certified Coach Randy Brown has the play-by-play call. Recorded live at Brunswick Zone Roswell in Roswell, Georgia on Saturday, January 13, 2018 for release on January 16, 2018.

      That is, perhaps, the greatest question ever asked. I should do a whole video on it. The answer is quite simple, really. You just show up to bowl, survive the qualifying round, and you're on the show. There's not a lot more to it than that. Well, if you're under 18, the first time you show up to bowl, you'll need a parent or legal guardian with you so they can sign the release form that grants me permission to photograph and record their minor child and put him/her on the internet (specifically, on CZcams). And you'll need to bring enough money to pay for your lineage. There's no "entry fee," per se. But you are responsible for paying for your bowling. Open play rates apply. But other than that, you just show up, let me know you're here to bowl PRODIGY, make sure I put your name on the list, and you're in the field. Then it's up to you and your talent to get through qualifying so you can make the show. That's all there is to it. Oh, and you must be a junior bowler. No adults allowed -- except on those rare occasions when we allow adults on the show.

    You know, given the format here, it actually reminds me of this term: Beer Frame. I don't see it mentioned here in the comments, but I know how it goes and there needs to be at least three bowlers in a team for it to be incurred: all but one player strikes and the vicim who didn't strike must buy a beer for his/her teammates. There's even a different variation called the "fry frame." It's the same thing as the beer frame, but when all but one player spares and the victim who didn't spare must buy french fries or an appetizer for his or her teammates. That was a mouthful, but great show!

      Sadly, just hours after this taping, the local fans went home and watched their Falcons fall to the Iggles, ending their season. I'm not a Falcons fan. My Chiefs came up short against the Titans a week earlier, and my Cowboys didn't even make the post-season. So I don't have a dog in the fight anymore and couldn't care less who wins. Although I must say I'd be happiest if someone -- ANYONE -- besides New England were to win. I hate them.

      brandon sawyers - I’ve thought about it. I don’t hate the idea...for variety’s sake. It’s just that I’m not a fan of the premise upon which World Bowling justifies the need for their dumbed-down scoring system. They say that bowling’s standard scoring method is “too complicated” for the masses. BULLSPIT!!! Junior high school kids used to make money by keeping score for adult leagues back when score was kept by hand on Telescore projectors with yellow grease pencils. I knew how to keep score when I was in elementary school. World Bowling is just flat wrong, and I refuse to support their dumbing down of our sport. Bowling’s scoring system has stood the test of time, and I don’t want to endorse their idiotic scoring system by giving it more exposure. That’s the only thing keeping me from using their scoring system...once.

    • @bjizzlae91
      @bjizzlae91 Před 6 lety

      very well put! i also learned at a young age how to keep score by hand and worked in a bowling center for 6 years. like you said bowlings scoring system has stood the test of time. i never read into why World Bowling decided to go with that scoring system but now that you have informed me that they have done it because the standard scoring system is "to complicated" i agree 100% with you and would agree not to use it! keep up the great work with these kids and look forward to watching more episodes in the future!

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, that's what they've said. The reason I'm loathe to endorse the World Bowling scoring method is because I simply don't agree that bowling needs to "be fixed." If, indeed, bowling has a problem (and some point to the shrinking league numbers and the growing number of bowling centers closing) as clear evidence of this, I, on the other hand, point to the robust health of junior bowling as clear evidence of a trend in the opposite direction. In any case, whichever argument you believe, one thing I'm sure of: whatever problems bowling has, the scoring system isn't one of them. It's held up for over a century, and even small kids can figure it out once it's explained to them. The reason so many among the "masses" don't understand how the scoring system works is because machines have been doing it for them since around 1970. And when's the last time you ever heard anyone explain it on television?
      I've rambled a bit in this reply. But to circle back around and address your specific comment, I just don't want to give any sort of tacit endorsement to World Bowling's foolish belief that bowling's scoring system needs fixing by using their scoring system on an episode of PRODIGY. It's a tiny gesture, I know. But I just don't want to provide any public endorsement of their premise for the justification of the system. If bowling does, in fact, have a problem, it's that too many in "governing" positions within the sport don't seem to fully appreciate what an awesome sport it is...just the way it is.

    Another good episode this week. Would love to see this format again with some of the regulars.
    I do have a couple of questions for you. First, have you ever had a chance to work with the manager to arrange a tour of the back of the alley for some of the regular Prodigy bowlers so they can see how the pinsetters work. I think it would be of great interest for the kids.
    Secondly, do you announce the week's format during that morning's league event or do you wait to just before the qualifying game?
    Finally, I noticed that Christian made a cameo in the episode. Why didn't he bowl?

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety

      Derrick, as bogus as this may sound, the bowling center doesn't, as a rule, allow people back behind the pinsetters. I've been back there (I insisted, and sometimes I haven't asked, I've just walked back there when I had to raise the guy back there and he wasn't responding to calls over the PA system). But they cite insurance reasons and the ever-present "company policy." I have walked the kids down the catwalk beside lane 40 to show them the tracers and explain their purpose. That got 'em pretty close. Just walking down the lane 40 feet gives you a much different perspective, but as I'm sure you would rightly point out, it doesn't give them a good look at the inner workings of the machines themselves. One of these days, I want to get the bowling center to lift the masking units on the last few pairs of lanes so we can shoot a PRODIGY with the 'setters showing. I think that would be cool....and kinda fun. As for getting the kids back there, frankly, I suspect some of them have already been back there, while others may not be all that curious about the machines at all. I know when I was a kid, I was VERY curious, and one of the coolest things I ever did was get the guy to take me back there and show me the machines. They were the earlier generation Brunswick "A" machines, similar to the A2 in look, but they ran much faster. I think if you ask the right person...at the right time...you just might get them to cooperate. You know, for "educational" purposes.

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety

      Melissa needs to address a few things: (1) She needs to get lower at the foul line. But she's already got her spine angle so far forward, it's almost parallel to the floor. She needs LESS forward spine tilt (keep her bottom down) and more (left) knee bend in that final step to get lower. As a taller person, she has farther to go to get low enough than us short people do. But she's young and ought to be able to get that deep knee bend without much problem. (2) She needs to ROLL the ball rather than heave it, lofting it a good eight or ten feet out past the foul line. She would do well to model her release after "Big" Hunter, who appeared in Match 2. He's nice and low at the line and lays the ball down smoothly, not the big loft. (3) She needs to keep her right elbow in close to her body in the downswing. She gets her elbow out to the right, which puts her hand way on the side of the ball, giving her wayyyyyy too much axis rotation for the speed she generates. Those bowling balls are made to hook even when you keep your hand BEHIND them through release, which is where she needs to learn to be. Hopefully, she'll read this and work on it. I gave her one lesson, and she proved to be VERY coachable. We didn't, however, spend much time on these issues. Most of our time was spent on lane play and how to adjust for spares. She's made good progress there already. Incredibly, at age 19, she never bowled junior league and only recently started bowling regularly (in open play). She's got one more year of eligibility as a junior bowler before she ages out. I'd love to work with her, but as of now, she's living in Augusta...at least for a while longer. But she says she's thinking about moving back to this area. If she does, I'd love to have her bowl in our youth program next season so I could get at least one year of working with her before she ages into adult league bowling.

    For some reason I've been noticing this.
    The prodigies this season that. You have done a sport shot on, I see they tend to miss spares more often. On a house shot, they shoot spares about the same way and make them all day. From my experiences when I feel like I'm confident in what my ball is gonna do on the strike shot, I tend to make more spares. (I tend to throw straight at most). On a day when I'm not feeling confident in what my balls gonna do on the first ball, I tend to miss spares. I am a really big feel person when it comes to bowling. If I don't feel good or comfy while bowling, I'm gonna miss spares most of the time. When I'm feeling comfy I can make spares. I always focus on keeping my arm and push away as free as possible. And here's where the catch is. I do that on both my first and second ball. Maybe these kids are focusing on it only for there first ball. Just my opinion.
    Thanks for reading this long message!
    Jacob

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety

      I think when a player can free-wheel it, they tend to stay loose and make more strikes AND more spares. But really, when they're tentative and feel like they're walking on egg shells, everything tightens up. (And I mean EVERYTHING, if you know what I mean.) But seriously, when strikes become hard to get, that usually means the ball is wandering all over the lane and you tend to leave more difficult spares. The two go hand-in-hand.
      I, for one, am not opposed to putting these kids on a house shot every now and then. When I was PBA back in the day, there were weeks when the scoring was dead easy, and there were weeks when you had to tread water just to keep from drowning. I like that ebb and flow. There's a certain mentality needed for keeping up in a high scoring match that is just as valuable to possess as the ability to grind it out when marks are at a premium.
      I like your thinking here.

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety +1

      This has been suggested a few times. We won't do it. Here's why: While I like throwing these little "twists" at the kids, one thing you'll notice about them is that they never tie one hand behind the kids' backs. In other words, they still have the opportunity to bowl their best. Depriving players of the ability to use their dominant hand is asking them to fall on their face, and I won't do that. Remember, the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers. By forcing them to bowl with their non-dominant hand, we're guaranteeing that they won't be able to bowl to the best of their ability, and I don't think that would be all that interesting for anyone to watch. We're already putting them on demanding oil patterns, but they can still bowl to the best of their ability because they can use their dominant hand and their knowledge about their arsenals. The only time we've ever done something that deprived them of some of their tools was during the Summer season when we did a show where they were forced to use only their spare ball. But wrong-handed? Why? What's next? Blindfolded? What's the point? Sorry, but I can guarantee you we'll never do a show of "opposite hand" bowling. It just doesn't appeal to me in the least.

      He has always bowled with that crooked elbow style. I don't love it. But you know what? Two of the greatest bowlers of all-time bowled with a crooked elbow. The great Don Carter, considered by many to be the greatest player of all time at the time the PBA first came into existence in the late '50s, and the incomparable Earl Anthony, considered by many to be the best bowler who ever stepped on approaches, both bowled with a crooked elbow. So it's hard to make a case against it. We've talked about it before, but Nolan has never shown much interest in trying to change it.
