PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- 04-22-2017 -- Single Ball Elimination Challenge

  • With some of our elite junior bowlers away in Columbus, Georgia at the PEPSI Tournament finals, nine kids stayed to bowl in this week's PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR competition. And by popular demand, we brought back the Single Ball Elimination format, where each bowler throws one ball in the frame, and the player with the low pinfall is eliminated. Once the field is winnowed down to two, those two finalists square off in a head-to-head handicap match, with the lower average player receiving a handicap equal to their handicap differential. So strap in. This is one of the most fun formats we use on PRODIGY, and even without some of our highest average players, there is no shortment of drama and excitement. NOTE: This episode begins with breaking news from the PEPSI Tournament, which was being decided in Columbus while our kids were bowling in this PRODIGY episode. USBC Silver Certified Coach Randy Brown on the play-by-plaly.

    Another fantastic episode, Randy! I'm just about 20 years old, and I bowl all the way up here in the snowbelt of Pennsylvania; but if I were a bit younger, you better believe I'd be begging my parents to bring me down south for some prodigy! For me personally, I love everything about bowling and I appreciate good form and fundamentals immensely I look forward to the weekly uploads so I can watch the kids bowl and track their improvements. From time to time, I will refer back to some of the older episodes, and the improvement I see made by both Charlie and Kara is absolutely wonderful! However, I see that Mikey definitely needs some work. I'm not the biggest fan of the 2 handed delivery, but if that is something he wants to pursue, there is a lot of tweaking that needs to be done. Finally, as a fellow bowler, I want to thank you for your contribution to our great sport. I admire what you doing for these kids, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for them! - John

    ****** BULLETIN ******* Not sure exactly when it happened or which one of you it was that put us over, but I see that we just went over 4,000 subscribers (4,015 when I looked a moment ago). Consider: When I first started filming our junior bowlers last fall contesting their weekly "after league challenge matches," my little BrownswickBowling CZcams channel had previously been set up just so I'd have a place to post videos of ME bowling (as if anyone was so desperate for entertainment they'd watch THAT!). Not surprisingly, the channel had something like 30 subscribers. That's 30 VERRRRRY bored people. LOL! But by September, we were starting to upload these videos. Sometime in October, I dreamed up the name PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR (which was originally used on a goofy little mashup video I produced of my son bowling back in the '80s to the soundtrack of Chris Schenkel and Nelson Burton, Jr. doing play-by-play). The channel began to catch on and word began to spread. It was over the Christmas break that we topped 1,000 subscribers. Now, here we are just four months later and we've just topped 4,000 subs! I'm blown away by your interest in these videos and your kindness in expressing your suppport for what we're doing. I hear you. PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is going to keep growing (thanks to YOU!). I hope to take our show on the road occasionally this Summer, and we'll start it all up again with a new Coveted Trophy Pin for 2017-18 this Fall. YOU GUYS ROCK! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!! --Coach Randy

      See, this is an example of how I hope PRODIGY can affect bowlers around the world. You don't have to FILM the after-league challenge matches for the kids to have a blast. All you have to do is HAVE the matches after league and challenge the kids to bowl in them. Here at Brunswick Zone Roswell, our kids had been staging these after league challenge matches all along. Sometimes, I even bowled with them. The point is to ENGAGE young people and give them something to bowl for -- in our case, something as simple as the right to sign the Coveted Trophy Pin in hopes of getting to keep it at season's end. But it could be a candy bar...or a pizza. ANYTHING to get them interested enough to want to stay focused and try to win. If they CARE about winning, then these matches will give them those pressure situations that I love putting kids in. And the more times they're faced with "perform-or-else" pressure situations, the less pressure they'll feel when they face them. That's the whole point.

      This might just be my favorite format. It's easy. It's a format that any kid, young or old, high or low average, can plausibly be competitive at -- you don't have to bowl the best to advance, you just have to avoid throwing the low ball of the frame to advance. And I absolutely love the fact that this format puts the kids under pressure with every single ball they throw. As I coach, I'm always looking for ways to simulate pressure for these kids, and this format does it.

    • @LEGENDKLLER1
      @LEGENDKLLER1 Před 7 lety

      I would say it is very successful in simulating pressure. I know I've been the most nervous when I have to get up and throw at least 9 in 1 ball. Just fun

    How long does it take to edit a video like this?

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 7 lety +6

      Well, let's take this week's video as an example. First, figure a couple of hours at the bowling center to gather up the kids, decide on the format, film the show, break down the equipment and head home. Then, once I get home, the first thing I do is ingest the footage into my computer. Figure on about an hour or a little less for that to complete. (I've got a super fast computer, so the footage usually is fully imported in less than "real time.") Then the real fun begins. I start by writing a script for the opening. That's the show open, the explanation of what we're doing, and the player introductions. Building all the interstitials (the parts between the actual bowling) take the longest because there's no real set format to it. I just have to add visual elements that match with what's being said in the written script. Then I start assembling the edit. The parts between the bowling matches are done first, since they're the most work intensive. Editing the matches consists of first going through and adding all the scoresheet elements and scoring. Then I go back and add the camera moves. The camera actually sits on a tripod without anyone manning it, so there's no one doing the zooms and pans. It's all done in post-production. Once all the editing is completed, only then do I go in and lay down the voice track of the play-by-play, which is always done last in the editing process. After that, I export a master (uncompressed) file (which is usually around 35-45 GB -- thank goodness I have a ginormous RAID). Then I re-encode the thing to get it ready to upload to CZcams. That takes only slightly less time than it takes to watch the video in its entirety. Then it's time to upload the video to CZcams, which usually takes about two hours from the time I start uploading to the time CZcams has re-encoded it to their standards and the thing shows up for all the subscribers. This weekend, because of the "Wide World" update at the front of the video, which added several hours to the editing process, I worked on the video from the time I got hom Saturday afternoon at around 3 until I went to bed that night (around 2 AM). Then I got up on Sunday (around 9) and worked all day on it until I finished the edit at around 2 AM Sunday night/Monday morning. I was exporting the master (uncompressed) file when I went upstars to watch something on TV while the computer whizzed away working on the export. And I fell asleep on the couch and didn't wake up until this morning (Monday) at around 7:30. After breakfast, I went downstairs, initiated the re-encode and then uploaded the video to CZcams. Taking time out here and there to let my dog out for a walk and eat meals, let's do some rough figuring: About 10 hours on Saturday (counting the 2 hours to film at the bowl). On Sunday, easily another 14 hours. And I probably spent another 2 hours or so today on the re-encode and upload. So somewhere in the area of 26 hours went into this week's show. Because of the PEPSI update at the front of the show, it took a little longer than most shows do, even though the format of this event called for somewhat less editing than a normal 3-match stepladder would. I usually say it takes between 20 and 25 hours to produce each video. That's pretty accurate. But this week, it actually took a little longer. I'm not factoring in all the hours I spent over the Christmas holiday break this past Winter producing all the 3D motion graphics, including the show open with the flying scoresheet and the PBT logo disc rolling down the lane making a strike. That stuff was built in Apple Motion, and I'm honestly not any good with Motion (I'm sort of a newbie with it). So it probably took me longer than it should have. But I spend days and days just on that opening sequence (which is only a few seconds long). Fortunately, once it's done, it's done, and I can use it over and over.

    Great job Kara! Great job everyone else! This was a hard pattern to score on...correct me if I'm wrong...but due to all the oil in the middle of the lane, it was hard for your bowling ball of choice to grab enough to go through the pins/pocket the right way...and not just slide through...that was a really cool format...glad you brought it back! Looks like alot of fun (and work😃) ahead! As usual thanks Randy, the parents, Lanes and the great kids! P.S. Glad your back Nolan!! Remember you all are awesome!! Blessings!...Dave oh....and congratulations to the Pepsi winners!!

    • @ddtalk
      @ddtalk Před 7 lety

      I agree that there was alot of dry area on the outside & normally you can use that area...but when you see so many ten pins then the ball isn't going through correctly..and many just slide through...which is why you had more 5-7 splits than normal..(How but that pocket 7-10 at the end......ideally they could have done a ball change to something more aggressive or slow their ball speed down...Kara was successful not only for accuracy but because her ball speed was slow enough to properly grip the lane...just my opinion... Blessings!!

      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 7 lety +1

      Not a particularly hard pattern. It's a house shot. However, between the end of the league and the time we started taping, this pair was bowled on quite a bit and may have been burned up.

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 7 lety +1

      All true. But what you don't know is that this pair (well, actually, lane 40 in particular) was given out for open play even while our league was continuing on some pairs. Quite a few games were bowled on that lane before we started filming PRODIGY on it. So it may have been burned up a bit. I'm certain the two lanes were nothing alike.

      Kara's going to keep getting better and better. The fact that she's bowling in a qualifier for Teen Masters this weekend means she's been practicing with her Brunswick T-Zone (plastic ball). You want to really accelerate your development? Bowl with a plastic (or weak urethane) ball. You have to throw it PERFECT to strike with those balls.

      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 7 lety

      Two things I'm trying to work on with Kara. One, I want her to get her hand more BEHIND the ball in the backswing. She's in perfect position through her push away. But just as the ball come back to the side of her hip, her hand come to the right of the ball, and the ball gets inside (to the left of) her wrist and hand, where it stays until release. If she could get a little more behind it longer, she'd have more power and hang fewer of those 4-5 and 5-7 splits and weak 10 pins. But there is a strength issue in play here, and it may just be one of those things we have to work with until she gets a little older, bigger and stronger. Still, she is so solid now and has so much potential, it's scary. You should have seen her last year. Ever since her trip to Kegel Training Center last Summer, she's been a totally different bowler. If I had footage of her a year ago, you wouldn't recognize her. Her game has changed (for the better) that much. I'm so proud of her.

      @stilltlrforlife Před 7 lety

      that's awesome, I do see what you mean about the roll of the ball and the rotation, I agree its a strength thing, and of course ball weight, but if she keeps it up she will be the next Kulick out there, shell eventually get the strength and comfort working the inside of the ball soon enough!! Jake, in case you missed it in the opening, PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is a series of "unofficial, informal and impromptu after league challenge matches." The operative word here is "IMPROMPTU." Our schedule certainly is. For the next few weeks, we're somewhat at the mercy of the Georgia USBC and their demands for lanes as they are holding their annual Open Championship at our center. I've received assurances that they won't need so many lanes for their Saturday morning squads that it would in any way affect our Saturday morning junior leagues. But their Saturday afternoon (1:30) squads are bigger and could interfere with PRODIGY. Or to be more specific, PRODIGY could interfere with their tournament. (I won't hold a PRODIGY if we're only a couple of lanes away from the tournament. We'll need to be separated by a few pair for me to be comfortable doing the show with the state Open Championship being held in the same building. This week, they only used lanes 1-22 for their 1:30 squad, so we had plenty of separation (we were on 39-40, and there were actually a few other open play lanes in use between us and the tournament). But if they do need enough lanes that there becomes an issue with us bowling too close, we simply won't shoot a PRODIGY because there won't be lanes for us to bowl on. (Unless we take our league bowlers and ask them to drive to a nearby bowling center and film it there, which seems awfully inconvenient to everyone.) I should know a few days ahead of time, as the tournament director has to send over the line-ups for the center to program into the scoring system. In fact, they might have this Saturday's line-ups already. Then we've got some dates through May that were set from the beginning of the season that may or may not be suitable for PRODIGY filming. (Parental consent has to be considered here, and there are a couple of parents who aren't too keen on the idea of putting their child on the internet. I have to be respectful of that. I have parental consent for all the bowlers you see on PRODIGY. I won't consider putting a minor on CZcams without their parent's consent.) And as of right now, our Summer plans are still up in the air. We'll have PRODIGY over the Summer. But what form it takes has yet to be decided. Will it be every week? Every couple of weeks? Whenever we can find kids to bowl? Coach Randy versus some kid? (God help you if that sounds interesting.) I don't know. I'd like to take the show on the road, but I have some personal issues that make that a challenge. After Saturday morning league, I'd want to go home and let my dog out before traveling across town to visit another center to film a PRODIGY. Otherwise, she'll explode while I'm gone, and who wants to help me clean that up? And besides, would their kids even still be there that late in the day? Unclear. Lots to factor in. Repeat after me, IMPROMPTU, IMPROMPTU, IMPROMPTU. It's called "being flexible" and "rolling with the punches." We'll have shows this Summer. I just can't predict right now what the schedule will look like, where the shows will be shot, how many we'll do or what form they'll take. But really, isn't that part of PRODIGY's charm? To borrow from Forest Gump, PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is a little like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're going to get. LOL!

      BrownswickBowling ok thank you. Still wanting to do it but it is just a matter of convincing my parents to drive me up there and also finding the time to drive 2 and a half hours to Atlanta. I'll do it eventually though, lol. Most likely during summer break considering I have testing and then the end of school

      Storm Shot - If I could remember, I'd tell you. It's some off brand that I'd never heard of, but he gets a great reaction from it. Search thru the PRODIGY videos' comments. On one of them, I answered someone's question with the answer. I just don't remember what the answer is.

      It now appears that we likely won't have lanes to bowl on this Saturday, the 13th, as this will be the final weekend of the Georgia State USBC Open Championship, and it likely will take up all 40 lanes of the center in the Saturday afternoon squad, which conflicts with our after-league taping. However, I am trying to arrange a big showdown match between Logan F. and Charlie to determine who wins the Coveted Trophy Pin. Stay tuned for a programming announcement. As soon as I can arrange this meeting, I'll let everyone know. That'll take us to the end of the 16-17 season and the awarding of the pin. Then we'll start up some sort of series over the Summer. Perhaps the winner can sign the Coveted Flip Flops? LOL!

      I have a collection of bowling balls that people have donated to give to junior bowlers. Hunter's red, white and blue plastic ball cracked, and I just happened to have a couple of lightweight reactive resin balls -- one 11 and one 12 pounder. So he's throwing those. (Got 'em plugged and re-drilled, of course.)

      Well, as I've told others, you could always consider running away from home and living in a cardboard box in the parking lot at Brunswick Zone Roswell. As far as I know, they have no policy against it. But I could be wrong. But be advised that it does get very hot and steamy here in the Summer and cold as ice in the Winter. So you might be better of sleeping in your own bed, living under the roof your parents have provided. The more I think about it, the better that idea sounds. But hey, if you ever have plans to come through the Atlanta area, check in and let me know and I'll fill you in on our filming schedule when you'll be in town. How's that?
