  • PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR -- Episode 52 -- "Howlin' Wolf Classic" -- Recorded February 10, 2018 for release on February 13, 2018 (Not actually released until February 14, 2018 due to technical problems in post-production. Sorry for the delay.)
    On this week's edition of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, we celebrate Valentine's Day by bringing you both the boys AND the girls. In our opening match, we crown a "Queen of the Hill" and get our first girl's name on The Coveted Trophy Pin this season. After that opening match, we turn our attention to the boys. A total of 14 boys began the qualifying round, and on today's show, you'll see the top five compete to become the next to sign The Coveted Trophy Pin.
    In case the name of the show this week didn't give it away, the kids are bowling on the PBA Wolf oil pattern. At just 32 feet in length, it is the shortest oil pattern they've ever faced on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR. We'll see if any of them have the nerve to play the lanes where the pattern tells them it's meant to be played -- out by the very edge.
    As usual, USBC Silver Certified Coach and former PBA player Randy Brown has the play-by-play call.
    We always welcome your comments, but ask that you keep them positive. Remember, the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling while we Elevate Junior Bowlers." So if your comment is nothing more than an insult mean to demean or be hurtful, it will be promptly removed. But if your critique is meant to help a young player improve their game and learn to become a better player, well, we encourage such comments here. That's what the spirit of PRODIGY is all about.

      BrownswickBowling love what you do with these kids here I've been a mechanic for AMF for 10 years and haven't seen anything like this do you think for one show you can try and do a long pattern on 1 lane and a short pattern on the other lane or use the pattern red square a 40 foot flat shot 2 to 2 all 40 feet keep up the work you do with these kids and love the vids every week a huge fan over here in long island NY

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety +1

      Erik Mcintyre - i’ve been wanting for some time to put a long oil pattern on one lane and a short oil pattern on the other, or to mix it up in some way like that. Just haven’t gotten around to it. And quite obviously, I fully intend to put these kids on a flat pattern every now and then. That said, unlike some, I’m actually not opposed to letting them bowling high-scoring conditions occasionally, too. I actually believe that where the mental game is concerned, there’s just as much value in teaching them how to be mentally prepared to stay in a high-scoring match where you have to match your opponent strike for strike as there is in grinding it out for a 170. And frankly, as far as the viewers are concerned, I think high-scoring matches are far more entertaining. So we will also occasionally bowl on a house shot, just because I think it’s a lot of fun.

    • @redneckelectrican
      @redneckelectrican Před 6 lety +1

      I completely agree with the high scoring for the mental game especially at the ages they are you don't want to overwhelm them and have them end up hating the game that comes with age would love to end up taking a trip down there one week and get to see you guys bowl live when I get my vacation now that I'm a B-mechanic and get vacation hours now maybe try and get a tour of the Brunswick A2s we only have 82-70s one or 2 82-30s and a few 82-90 pinsetters around here.

      Erik Mcintyre - would love to have you. On a few occasions, we have had visitors come just to watch prodigy. A couple of weeks ago when we were at AMF Woodstock. a gentleman came up to me and said, “you should change that opening billboard on the show. It’s not best viewed full screen, it’s best viewed live and in person.”

    I'm so glad this episode came out.
    I have a Jr. Gold qualifier on the 25th of this month. I'm looking at Logan and Tyrell and I notice that not only they get revs but they have SUCH good balance at the line. I'm becoming a better bowler because I'm working on timing. Timing in such an underrated element in bowling. Tyrell and Logan have perfect timing. Good show randy

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety

      Soccer/Fußball4life Legos, Soccer & More!!! - Balance is certainly partly a result of timing. But it’s mostly a function of keeping your center of gravity over your feet and not letting your spine angle get too extreme too soon in the approach. Keep your feet under you and you’ll stay in balance and maintain your leverage.

    Wish i could bowl in this, im from delaware averaging about 205 but im 19. We had nothing like this when coming up in school. I had to start our high school bowling team sophmore year and it's still only a club and im graduated. Wish i had this opportunity and applaud you for giving these kids this opportunity. In my local center we cant even get enough people to bowl a sportshot league for experience and i really dont have the funds to spend on regionals since i am in college. It sucks, wish bowling was more popular.

      K Maloney I know how you feel. Im also 19, I have a 213 average. But I left my youth league for an adult league when I was 14. Here in Canada we don't have the best youth programs

    I was wondering if you could play a "game" that we use in our highschool team practice it's called golf and the way you play is you want to get the lowest score without getting a gutter if you gutter on the first ball it is counted as a strike and if you gutter on the second you get a spare other than that scoring is the same but the trick is unless you can shot seven ten ever time for a 24 you want to try hit the 6,9,10 and the 4,7,8 for a not so clean 60

    Sorry I didn't post a comment to last week's episode. The PBA was in town bringing the Tournament of Champions home for the first time in twenty-five years. Once again, the most famous pair of bowling lanes in PBA history (lanes 27 and 28 at Rivera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio) were featured in a championship weekend for the PBA. It was a nice weekend in our fair city.
    After last week's episode, I have an idea for you. Perhaps for one week, you should have ONLY the Prodigy kids providing the PBP and color commentary for the entire episode (have a pair of kids provide commentary on one match). Maybe if you did this, it may take a little bit longer to edit the video (due to getting the kids together to provide the commentary, since I assume the commentary is added post-production). While I enjoy your PBP commentary, hearing Christian provide another perspective and can also be a lesson for the kids on such things as editing and providing PBP commentary which may be valuable experience.

      Derrick M. King - Something like that has already been in the works for a while. But it’ll be a special episode. That’s all I’m saying for now.
      I’ve only been to Akron once and it was back when I did play-by-play of PGA TOUR golf. But when we traveled there, I brought my bowling equipment (2 urethane balls) to Riviera Lanes. Sweet-talked the lady at the counter into letting me and a couple of my co-workers bowl on 27 and 28. It was a thrill. One lane seemed fresh, while the other was completely burned up. I shot 247 our last gamy. My co-workers (not bowlers) were awe-struck with my wizard-like mastery. It was a fun night I’ll never forget.

    • @dmking12370
      @dmking12370 Před 6 lety

      I did not know you did PBP for the PGA Tour. Unfortunately, Akron may be losing its golf tournament after this year, as there is no deal announced between the PGA and Bridgestone (who apparently wants to take the tournament to Japan).
      I am glad that you got to experience the best pair of lanes in all of bowling. I got that experience (though the last time I did the entire alley was Brunswick back in the late 80's/early 90's).
      I am looking forward to that special episode.

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 6 lety +1

      One thing you can do to practice that will help you improve, even if a house can't or won't put out a sport shot is to play different parts of the lane, even if there's no real shot there. For instance, if your house shot really calls for you to play around the 2nd arrow (or about the 8th board at the arrows, let's say), then move in and play the third arrow, or the 4th arrow and try to get lined up and strike there. Or grab the totally wrong ball for the condition and try to strike with it. Or just bowl with your spare ball. You don't need a sport shot to test yourself the way a sport shot would test you.

      BrownswickBowling Wouldn’t hurt to try just trying to see more angles I can play to get to the pocket. Thanks really appreciate it. Sounds like it would help especially for away meets. This is my first year of highschool and there was 2 away meets that I really struggled at due to the outside not being how I’m used to and I got lost trying to find a mark that worked. So next time I go out to practice I’ll try that out thanks Randy

    Can I join the prodigy bowlers tour

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před rokem

      @TheRealBangerTwinz -- There's really nothing to join. PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is not a tour, per se. It's not a league. It's not even a tournament or a series of tournaments. PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is a made-for-CZcams "TV" series that showcases youth bowlers in competition. In November, 2021, I moved from the Atlanta area back home to the town where I grew up -- Kansas City. Since June of 2022, PRODIGY has been in partnership with a tournament series here known as the Kansas City Open. Each month, usually on the first Sunday of the month (except July and August), they hold a tournament in five average-based divisions. And at each month's tournament, PRODIGY covers the stepladder finals of TWO of their divisions -- always Division 1 and one other Division (we mix it up between the different divisions 2 thru 5). Watch any of our recent shows since June of 2022 and you'll see what I mean. If you want to enter a Kansas City Open (KCO) tournament, you'll need to be a sanctioned USBC member who's of age to participate in youth bowling, which means you must not have yet turned 18 as of August 1st of the current bowling season (the season we're in right now on 1/12/2023 is the 2022=2023 season, so you would need to have not turned 18 on 8/1/2022). Once you've competed on the show, you are considered an official member of the PBAA (Prodigy Bowlers Across America) and you get your name listed on our website at www.prodigybowlerstour.com. Hope that answers your question.

      Many of our players are quite well-versed in varying their hand positions to effect a different kind of ball motion. I am constantly amazed at how advanced some of them are for their age. Certainly they have much to learn. But most of our better players are among the better players in the state not merely because they're blessed with talent. They're also blessed with a healthy dose of curiosity and desire to learn, and their work ethic will get them where they need to be.

      You would definitely have fun. And yes, we welcome visitors to come bowl PRODIGY with us. I always warn those who travel to come bowl that there's no guarantee you'll make the show. Like any tournament, you have to go through the qualifying round(s) to get to the finals, or in this case, the Championship Round, which is what we record for the show.
      One of these days soon, I'm going to have to make a video that's devoted to the subject of how to go about getting on PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR. The short version is, you just show up and bowl. (Be sure to bring a parent or guardian so they can sign the release form I need to photograph and film you to put their minor child up on CZcams.)

      I answer this question on the show. He’s out of town at a tournament. He’ll be out of town this weekend, too. As will a number of our other top players.

    On wolf I actually don't agree with playing outside because the lane topography makes the gutter play funny I think playing inside with symmetric (IQ tour gb2 or Rico) with polish. Lot of speed and weaker hand positions to take advantage of the bounce

      Shane Connelly - Certainly a player’s results can vary. But if you get the ball coming off a 32 foot pattern much inside of the very outside of the lane, you’re going to be fighting with keeping the ball off the nose or going Brooklyn all day.

      I bowled on this pattern at my local center and tried outside and the gutter played really funny (gutters or 3-6-10) so I moved everything in and used a weaker hand position and a shiny ball and a lot of speed andI actually had miss room out but none in. Not bad for almost 1:1 I shot +50 in 4. what I'm saying is that when your breakpoint is that far outside you run into topography problems throwing everything off. On paper its 1-2-3 but because of lane surface it's not. That's why Logan won because he played a more consistent part of the lane and took advantage of the bounce plus shots outside hooked as a bonus

      There are many variables in how a pattern plays. For starters, we were using (I think the 2016 version of Wolf. They change these patterns just about every year, so you might have been bowling on a different version. Then there is the matter of which synthetic surface (or whether you're bowling on wood vs. synthetic). Different lane machines put down the same pattern a littel differently, making them play differently. And finally, the topography of the lanes themselves, which can wildly alter the way they play. Bottom line: You can run the exact same pattern with the exact same machine on two different pairs of lanes (or in two different houses with different surfaces) and you'd swear they're completely differnet patterns they can play so differently.
      The Rule of 31, which is nothing more than a good starting point, states that if you subtract 31 from the length of the pattern (in this case, 32 feet), the number you get is which board you want the ball on as it exits the end of the pattern. Kegel arrived at this "Rule of 31" after years of research. But it is only a guideline. Plus, how you get to that board (bellying the ball out to the edge or playing straight up the 1 board) will vary based on rev rate, axis rotation, speed, which ball you're using, etc. There are A LOT of variables.
      Which is why bowling is considered a "thinking man's (or woman's) game." Quite often, there's not one "right" answer. There's only a right answer for YOU. But the Rule of 31 is a good starting point if you need to find the line with just a few shots before the curtain goes up.
      But as with most things in life, your mileage may vary. When it comes to getting lined up in bowling, ALWAYS let YOUR ball reaction be your guide. When I do play-by-play on this show, there isn't time for me to list every possible scenario. That just can't be articulated in the few seconds between each shot. That's true for me on PRODIGY and it's true for every other announcer on every other bowling telecast. There just isn't time to go into all the thousands of variables and possible ways an individual player might decipher the pattern and how HIS ball motion is reacting to it. As always, the bowler's job is to figure it out for himself and find a way to score. It's why I mentioned (briefly, in passing) at one point in this bowlcast that there's a difference between playing "bowling swing" and actually bowling for score. When you're in competition, you've gotta figure out a way to get the pins down by hook or by crook, without much regard for what the so-called "experts" say is the "best" way to play the lanes. If you get the best reaction throwing the ball while walking on your hands and standing on your head, then I recommend doing that.
      Go with what works for YOU. But if you're looking for a place to start, the Rule of 31 is usually going to put you somewhere in the ballpark...if you know YOUR game and how to interpret the RO31.

      Shane Connelly actually the wolf at Roswell played like 33-35 feet and with all the urethane being thrown in the championship pair it played like a completely different pattern.

      Jake H yes that's the thing with wolf is there is so much head oil it carries down and you up shell but the factor is by far the topography outside
